Cat Toy In the Outfield

Cat Toy in the Outfield

Hot pink fluff ball in deep green grass
One googly eye almost torn off
Holds on by a hard blip of glue;
The other’s long gone.
Its elastic string stretched to exhaustion
and frayed at the end tied to the white plastic ring…
How did it get here?

The outfield’s pretty quiet in intramural softball
I’m waiting for something that most likely won’t happen.

What cat played with this thing at my feet?
Not just ruined now but badly lost--
No cat will wander by on a leash and find it.
Its wait is even more futile than mine,
But mine requires more attention.

The one googly eye looks up at me and
I laugh at myself for feeling sorry for a lump of acrylic puff.
I wonder, does the cat miss it? Feel guilt?
Surely it has moved on to a new toy,
Something with a bell and a tiny bird feather.

hard blip of glue--I love how you're using this word!
Like me, the "g" is silent.

It's reminiscent of Eberhart's 'The Groundhog' only with humor. To me anyway!
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."
