Trondheim is 100km northeast from me. I will probably attend. Don't think Elvis have played this far north before.

What, is he outward bound on a tramp steamer for some god forsaken oil platform in the North Sea? What else is up that way? $8.00 plus US for a blasted cup of coffee these days in that part of the world as my daughter forlornly found out recently. Ah, the blessings of 'oil wealth'!

I'd like to "Scotch" all these rumours about further trips to see EC( for the present). I can confirm that Mrs Sulky and I are on very good terms if only because I'm still busy with the garden, new house and new dog (Seamus the wonder dog!) to be sorting out any of my recordings ! :(

Wonderful tour with Elvis
A better outdoor concert in Trondheim with Elvis Costello & co than we did on Thursday night, is strictly unrealistic.

TERJE EIDSVÅG

Elvis Costello's first concert in Trondheim started as a triumph, let loose in many directions along the way and took the brilliant in with a finale that makes it a whole is difficult to imagine that he could ravaged so much better in the Courtyard.

He concentrated on material from their first and last bunch of plates and allowed most of the 80 - and the 90's lying. 22 songs in 90 minutes, including seven cover versions became a powerhouse, how much did super. Just that few of the most feisty, energetic songs showed that it is getting pretty long time since 1978.

The band he plays with is strictly The Attractions, only the original bassist Bruce Thomas is replaced with American Davey Faragher, also getting veteran. He has this year's 20th anniversary of his debut in Trondheim, when the band of John Hiatt at Skansen.

Two of the reasons Costello on some show tunes at least as good as ever, Steve Nieve and Pete Thomas. Tangent Man Nieve fresh bursts down the old songs, with playful twists that make no songs like "same procedure ...". Pete Thomas is a no-nonsense drummer of the finest kind, effective counterweight to Nieves 'mad professor' approach.

If Costello has lost some of the frenestiske energy from the first part of his career, he has grown big as a singer, musician and stage personality. After energetic start with a gem variety from 1978 to 1980 initially, recreated his 80s gem "Everyday I Write The Book" in reinforced soul mode.

Old favorites alternated with songs from the last four discs. Some of them stood up remarkably well against the old favorites, especially the groove-oriented "Bedlam" and the war story "Jimmie Standing In The Rain", which shone stronger from the scene, along with old classics, than on their respective boards.

Unlike many artists with 30-40 years of career behind him, heard that Costello is still a fan of music. It is for example reflected in cover versions, with two brilliant versions of songs by his old friend Nick Lowe and unexpected the charming straight lighter version of the ballad to Prince, "Purple Rain".

That Johnny Cash song only put so so, was more than offset by a dense, intense version of Sam & Dave's "I Can not Stand Up for Falling Down," better than the original. The concert faded a little strange enough as it was approaching climax. 78-favorites "Chelsea" and "Pump It Up" came to life in 50-year-olds in front of the stage, but the song stickier than just good luck.

Fortunately, "I Want You" and swept tributaries to the skepticism of the court. The intense passion drama still glowed, and his version of "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love & Understanding" is so passionate, riveting rock and roll with heart and soul, that finer point shall be demonstrated

A sidebar includes the setlist:

• I Hope You're Happy Now

Preview and interview with Ida Jenshus: http://www.adressa.no/kultur/article8025975.ece

This year's event for me

Ida Jenshus sees similarities between himself and Elvis Costello before double concerto St. Olav Festival.

Steinkjer girl may have been more famous than his father, the former RBK profile Geir Jenshus.

- Yes, it may have changed from people asking if I'm his daughter, that they ask him if he's my dad when they hear the name, she says, laughing.

Working on new album

Jenshus is working on his next album which will probably come next year. It is currently the experimentation stage, but those who found their way to the Courtyard at 20.30 on Thursday night heard a sample under 26-year-old concert before legend Elvis Costello on the scene.

Before samples said Jenshus to adressa.no that she dreamed of standing on the stage in the Courtyard where she has been the audience several times.

- This concert is this year's event for me, she says.

Similarities with Costello

26-year-old also think it's fun to stand on the same stage as legend Elvis Costello and believes one of the similarities between her and Costello is that they both like to experiment with genres.

- But the biggest similarity is that both might like to go with the hat, she says, laughing.

Musikknomade uten fast sjanger

My Aim Is True» i 1977.

Musikkens Kevin Bacon

Music Nomade no fixed genre

Trondheim Recent Elvis Costello comes with hiphop album this fall. 58-year-old hopes he is not completely satisfied.

I played with The Roots sometimes on talk show Jimmy Fallon, where they are husband. We had very good chemistry and decided to see what we could achieve if we went into the studio together, says Elvis Costello.

Thursday playing Elvis Costello in the Courtyard St. Olav Festival, not with the hip-hop group The Roots, but with his usual backing band The Imposters.

From The Roots-operation was the song "Walk Us Uptown" just released, and the autumn Elvis Costello & The Roots with the album "Wise Up Ghost." They did not deal with any record label when they went into the studio, but suddenly they had recorded an entire album. Now the plate is given out on the legendary jazz label Blue Note.

- It was perhaps a bit risky as the industry is now, but we were never really afraid that no one would release it, Costello says, laughing.

From punk to chamber

Elvis Costello's career began at the pub in the early 70s. Some years later he was part of London's punk and nyveivmiljø, and he had his breakthrough with debut album "My Aim Is True" in 1977. Since then, Costello was there. He has worked with rock, jazz, bluegrass, chamber music and country music, to name a few. But now it is something new.

- What was your relationship with hip-hop before you started working with The Roots?

- I remember I heard Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" (legendary hip-hop single journ.anm.) When it came out in 1982. I realized that the song meant a lot and it said something about a desperation and a reality that I did not belong, but still could sympathize with. I did not emulate this culture, but "The Message" affected me anyway, says Costello.

Music's Kevin Bacon

But Costello, who is married to the famous jazz singer Diana Krall, is not really interested in talking about genres.

- I like chamber music, but that does not mean I like all the chamber. I like jazz, but that does not mean I love all jazz. The same is true hiphop. But these genre designations mean nothing. It's just music that matters, he says.

Costello is a favorite collaborator, and has worked with artists such as Annie Lennox, Burt Bacharach and the Brodsky Quartet string quartet. He has also produced albums for artists such as The Pogues and The Specials.

Costello has been described as music's Kevin Bacon. The actor got a game named after him, which is to find the shortest path between a randomly chosen actor and him, a road which is never long because of Bacon's very extensive and varied career. So it will apparently also be with Elvis Costello in the world of music.

Deprecated purchase of plate

But Costello has not only friends in the music industry. He is a big mouth and has never been afraid to go to war. In 2011, for example, Costello went out and invited British fans not to buy his latest album. The record company Universal had released a special box with Costello's music, to around 2,000 million. Costello said that the price must either be pressure failure or an attempt satire, and he asked fans steer away.

In an interview with The Telegraph in 2009, Costello said that he could not understand that Oasis' Noel Gallagher could mention his name in the same sentence as Paul McCartney, and Gallagher live in the delusion that he at all is a songwriter. Costello says he has lost track of what he actually said and what people claim he has said.

- I've given so many interviews that I've lost all track. And in a certain period, I had perhaps not as good control over what rattled me. But often things that are said about me, confused with what I actually said, says Costello.

Switches between 150 tracks

The Attractions Elvis Costello's backing band from 1978 to 1986, their first recording was the famous single "(I do not want to go to) Chelsea" and again for a period of 90s. His backing band is now The Imposters, which is a continuation of The Attractions.

When Elvis Costello and The Imposters now coming to Trondheim, it is with 150 songs in your suitcase. What they play, they decide often while they are on stage.

- It causes us to be sharpened, and it makes the songs remain a bit fresher. It is important not to solidify in one set. It is dangerous to be complacent, and I hope I never completely satisfied, says Elvis Costello.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.
