New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Last year, D'Angelo took part in a series of covers and jam sessions alongside The Roots and others Jun. 10 at Bonnaroo, marking his first U.S. performance in a decade. With the Roots, Quest has a pair of albums slated for a 2013 release: the band's 17th studio album and a just-announced collaborative effort with Elvis Costello.

From the other thread...

The Roots' longtime engineer Steven Mandel tweeted yesterday:
‪@ElvisCostello‬ just called me from Australia to discuss the Kinks song "Australia."
There's also this from September:
Steven Mandel who mixes sound for the Jimmy Fallon show and produces the Roots band recently recorded Elvis Costello in Vancouver with the Roots.
And this from August:
Dear Dave,
I recently used one of your prototype CM-12SE mics at Crew Studios in Vancouver and was referred to your website by Mike Cashin, Studio Manager/Head Engineer.

Currently working on an Elvis Costello and The Roots album, which is what we used your mic for, and I gotta say, it was perfect for Elvis's voice and it sounded amazing. We are going to be continuing work on the album in New York and I wanted to purchase a CM-12SE for continuity and also for further projects with and without Elvis. Of course, I'll be mentioning you and your microphone in the credits of the album, it was that great. I mean, we had a nice mic pre and an LA-2A but still, I don't even have to EQ it. Awesome work!

I have been the engineer for the Roots albums since around 1997 and also work with them on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Is the best way to just buy it straight off the website?

I'd like to pick one up immediately."

Thanks,
Steve Mandel

The page on the left has the lyrics for "Pills and Soap." There appears to be another song called "Rise Up Ghost."

There will be a tour and it will be epic, RIGHT?

And how about an Elvis Costello week on Jimmy Fallon's show when the album is released?

The Roots & Elvis Costello Team Up for Album in 2013
by Chris Payne, N.Y. | January 22, 2013 3:00 EST

Since becoming the house band on NBC's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" in 2009, the Roots have backed everyone from Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon to Bon Iver and Carly Rae Jepsen. And now, another collaboration with a legendary artist that began on the "Late Night" stage is leading to a full-length album.

Roots drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson has exclusively revealed to Billboard that the group is prepping a collaborative project with Elvis Costello that should be out sometime this year. "It was really love at first sight," Thompson says of Costello, who has made three "Late Night" appearances, including a performance in February 2012 during a week-long tribute to Bruce Springsteen. "The second time he came on, we surpassed the first one. So by the third time, he was like, 'Let's stop messing around and do something together.'"

The initial plan was to cut just a few tracks, but those sessions proved fruitful enough for the artists to keep going. Says Thompson, "we had 13 or 14 songs, but then we said, 'Ooh! Wait a minute! Let's replace four of these songs with four better songs! And now we have the tightest 12-14 song collection out of about 20 songs that we made."

In the near future, Costello and the Roots plan to mix and master the as-yet-untitled LP with assistance from Roots engineer Steven Mandel, who is co-producing the project with them. It is unclear at deadline which label will release the album. "We kind of have the freedom to take it around, whether it's to Elvis' people or Def Jam's people," says Thompson. "I can just say that it is brilliant."

In addition to the Costello album, the Roots are planning to release their own new LP, "& Then You Shoot Your Cousin," either in late 2013 or early 2014. "We're in the genesis of that right now," says Thompson of the follow-up to 2011's Grammy-nominated "Undun."

As reported earlier today, Thompson is also heavily involved in D'Angelo's long-awaited follow-up to 2000's "Voodoo," which he says should finally be released this year. The Roots also just announced the lineup for their sixth annual Roots Picnic, set for June 1 at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia.

So excited! They've recorded 20 songs! I wonder if they're all originals. I guess there'll be a few covers (inc. The Kinks' 'Australia' as mentioned above)

What great news! Just when I thought I'd have to wait a couple more years for Elvis to come back out of his shell. This is very exciting!

Hmmm - maybe he was just chatting about The Kinks' 'Australia' because he's there at the moment. But here it is - I'd never heard of it before.

Or maybe he is planning to give this song an outing during the Australian shows to get the locals onside ? I do hope so. Also what chance of airing any of these other collabarations. Heck my excitement for this weekends fest ( Melbourne and South Australia )knows no bounds !!

This is very exciting, especially coming on the heels of a round of interviews where Costello was once again hinting that he was through with making records.

It seems that Costello has now reached the point where HE is the McCartney figure, the Bacharach, the elder musical statesman teaming up with a younger group to make a record. I think this is great, because I think he'll actually be more adventurous, that's always been his nature, so it will be fun to see what his dynamic with The Roots is.

More importantly, I think this is probably going to be a million miles from National Ransom or Secret, Profane & Sugarcane-- I genuinely have NO idea what this record is going to be like! Which is exactly what it should feel like before a new Costello album comes out.

The clips of EC & The Roots are no longer available on the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon website. Does anyone have versions of those performances saved that they could post somewhere?

So I guess we can presume that these are the tracks? (As pointed out by Lester Burnham in another thread):
If you check the ASCAP site (https://www.ascap.com/Home/ace-title-search/index.aspx), there are a handful of titles since 'Sparkling Day' that have been registered. I'm sure a few of them are for TV shows or whatever, but here's what's new to me:

Am I Laying Tinder At My Own Stake?
For More Tears
Give Thy Soul To Me
I Can't Say Her Name
Lucky Dog
Mischievous Nights
Mister To You
Moon Is High
That's Me
The Uncrowned King
They're Not Laughing At Me Now
This Gift
Twist Of Barbwire
Under The Spreading Stanley Laurel
What Is It That I Need That I Don't Already Have
Wrong Wrong Wrong About Me
(Apart from 'That's Me', which we know is that crazy Rex Harrison/Sympathy For The Devil kinda song

I really really REALLY would like to see / hear their version of Chelsea from 2009 as well. If my memory serves me well it was not aired but available on web only.

It's possible some of these songs could appear on the new album, but they weren't written especially for it.

"For More Tears" and "Lucky Dog" go back a couple of years and have been played live.

"Give Thy Soul To Me," "That's Me," and "Wrong, Wrong, Wrong About Me" are part of the Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County project.

"This Gift" is a song by Str8face which samples "Alison."

"Twist Of Barbwire" was recorded by both Jonathan Jackson and Clare Bowen for the Nashville TV series. Elvis reportedly wrote two songs for Nashville, and I had assumed "Moon Is High" was the other one based on when it was registered with ASCAP, but it has not yet appeared on the show.

"Under The Spreading Stanley Laurel" was allegedly played with the Sugarcanes in 2010.

The other songs have been listed on ASCAP since at least May 2011.
