I understand the mixed feelings about many of Young's 80s albums, but Freedom came out in 1989.Jack of All Parades wrote:Quite possibly one of the greatest wastes of vinyl along with Neil's"Arc" or any of his 80's records.

No poetry in that noise for my ears, Otis. As to ATUB, it has never done it for me. As others have noted it is mediocre at best and I have not played it with any regularity. In fact I have always thought he left the best off in Almost Ideal Eyes and My Dark Life- much more prefer the songs on the bonus disc. But that is just me.Otis Westinghouse wrote:Don't you find a certain sonic poetry in it? Talking of destroyed ear drums, I quite like music where my tinnitus blends successfully with the noises being created, and MMM is like tinnitus gone mad. I think seeing it 'performed', or something that took its cue from it, made me appreciate the ethos more.Jack of All Parades wrote:I would but it destroyed my ear drums!
Can't believe anyone would propose ATUB. The Other End of the Telescope alone is worthy of the label 'masterpiece'.

On the plus side, Elvis is acknowledged as a great artist.
However, I wouldn't class this as a terrible album.
Clown Strike, Rockinghorse Road, Just About Glad and All The Rage are some of my favourites.

Goodbye Cruel World is easily his worst. Brutal Youth? Come on...

Goodbye Cruel World isn't great but even that has some songs that I enjoy a lot like Inch by Inch and Worthless Thing.
Ditto for Secret Profane and Sugarcane with Crooked Line and Changing Partners.
Brutal Youth is one of my favourites.
When I was Cruel I like but not love.
North is not for me but I certainly wouldn't call it terrible and Still is magnificent.
Whether you call it an Elvis album or not, but surely For The Stars is the one?

I don't think For the Stars counts as an EC album. It just doesn't.

Momofuku would be mine - it's not very memorable, at least very little of it has ever managed to lodge itself in my head.

Well, I bloody LOVE Brutal Youth and When I Was Cruel. Outstanding pieces of work, both of them. I could pick a song or two from both which don't set my world on fire, but as complete entities, I would list both amongst my favourite albums of all time, let alone favourite EC albums.

As far as EC is concerned everybody knows the man has never put out a bad album, even his B sides records: Ten bloody/Taking Liberties and Out of our idiot are masterpieces!

All This Useless Beauty, too. Maybe not his most cohesive work, overall, but there aren't many artists who could release a better album that one of EC's supposed "lesser" efforts. Love it to bits.
