Elvis Costello: „Ich kann immer noch ein Bad Boy sein“
Bald wird in Hamburg am Glücksrad gedreht: Elvis Costello kommt am 3. Juni für ein exklusives Konzert nach Deutschland. Mit uns sprach er über Vatergefühle, seinen Ärger über moderne Soundqualität, die Zusammenarbeit mit seiner Frau und seinen Zweitjob als Zirkusdirektor.
Mr. Costello, was macht den Reiz der „The Spectacular Spinning Songbook“-Konzerte aus?
Der Abend mit uns ist durch diese neue Ebene kein gewöhnliches Konzert-Erlebnis. Ich würde es eher als eine Art Vaudeville-Show bezeichnen, ein Karneval. Wir haben ein riesiges Rad auf der Bühne, darauf stehen 30 Songtitel und 10 Joker. Meine Assistentin – eine 1.80m große attraktive Ukrainerin in einem sehr ansprechenden Kostüm – holt die Zuschauer auf die Bühne und die drehen dann das Rad. So werden die Songs die wir spielen zufällig ausgewählt. Die Leute mögen es Teil der Show zu sein, manchmal kriegen wir sie fast nicht mehr von der Bühne.
Wer hat diese 30 Songs vorher ausgewählt?
Wir - und jedes Mal schreiben wir andere Songs aufs Rad; die Band hat also ein enormes Repertoire. Auf der Tour haben wir schon über 160 verschiedene Songs gespielt. Kein Song wird benachteiligt behandelt und auch vergessene Songs bekommen so eine neue Chance zu leben. Außerdem bewahrt diese Mischung die Zuschauer vor der Nostalgie-Falle.
Bewahrt Sie dieses Konzept auch davor sich selbst zu langweilen?
Natürlich. So hat jede Show eine ganz andere Lebendigkeit. Wir sind viel wacher und überraschen uns manchmal selbst; so etwas spürt das Publikum. Wir werden dadurch nie zu routiniert. Einmal zum Beispiel ging die Bassdrum kaputt und musste während des Konzertes repariert werden. Wir haben dann das Rad weitergedreht und es zeigte ausgerechnet „Alison“ an – eigentlich ein Band-Song. Aber ich habe ihn ganz alleine auf der Gitarre gespielt und der Song hat sich dadurch für mich ganz neu erschlossen. Er fühlte sich so pur an – als ob ich ihn gerade erst geschrieben hätte.
Gibt es auch Songs auf die Sie keine Lust mehr haben?
Nein, eigentlich nicht...und wenn es wirklich ganz schlimm ist, schreibe ich sie einfach nicht aufs Rad. (lacht)
Sie geben in der Show auch eine Art Moderator...
Ja, ich bin nicht nur Musiker, sondern zusätzlich der Zirkusdirektor, der die Leute unterhält. Dadurch entwickeln sich zwei Ebenen. Nun, sie wissen ich bin Engländer – eigentlich versteht man unseren Humor nicht; aber in dieser Rolle klappt das ganz gut. Nur manchmal weiß ich nicht ob die Leute merken, dass die Show auch eine Satire auf die Popkultur ist – das Ganze sieht aus wie eine Art Game-Show, aber man kann keinen Kühlschrank gewinnen; was man aber gewinnt sind gute Songs.
Zuletzt gab es Irritationen über Ihr Verhältnis zu England, fühlen Sie sich mittlerweile als Amerikaner?
Ich habe mich nie als Engländer, aber auch nie als Amerikaner gefühlt. Ich glaube, ich brauche einfach keine nationale Identität. Und ich bin auch nicht nach Mississippi, New Orleans oder Nashville gegangen um dort Amerikaner zu werden – ich bin immer einfach dahin gegangen wo die Musiker waren, mit denen ich arbeiten wollte. Ich fühle mich wie ein Schauspieler am Drehort.
Vor einiger Zeit sagten Sie, Sie hätten seit 16 Jahren keinen Urlaub gemacht – was macht Sie so rastlos?
Also mittlerweile habe ich doch Urlaub gemacht – mit zwei kleinen Söhnen ist das unvermeidlich – aber es fällt mir nicht leicht. Es gibt so viele Projekte und Ideen und außerdem liebe ich das Leben auf Tour.
Kommen Ihre Söhne bei so viel Arbeit nicht zu kurz?
Das ist der einzige Wermutstropfen, das macht mich immer sehr traurig. Mit dem Tod meines Vaters im letzten Jahr wurde mir bewusst, welche Verantwortung ich gegenüber meinen Kindern habe und das die gemeinsame Zeit begrenzt ist. Ich muss für sie da sein, aber ich muss auch arbeiten. Außerdem sind meine Konzerte mein Lebenselixier und ich bin leider auch nicht so reich, dass ich nicht arbeiten müsste.
Aber Sie haben doch für sehr viel Geld große Teile Ihres Kataloges an Universal Music verkauft...
Das stimmt und die veröffentlichen jetzt alles immer wieder. Als sie vergangenes Jahr das Box-Set „The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook“ für einen unfassbar hohen Preis verkauft haben, musste ich einfach einschreiten. Ich habe allen gesagt, sie sollen dieses Produkt bloß nicht kaufen. Diese Leute können ja jetzt nicht einfach alles in meinem Namen machen, nur weil sie die Rechte an ein paar Song besitzen.
Werden Sie bald eine Autobiografie schreiben?
Nein, jedenfalls nicht in der Art „Ich war da und dann passierte das und dann lernte ich den kennen...“ - wen interessiert das? Soll ich erklären warum ich so ein „Bad Boy“ war und jetzt nicht mehr bin? Ich kann immer noch so „bad“ sein wie sie wollen, aber ich muss das nicht beweisen. Ich arbeite aber tatsächlich an einem Manuskript; es wird eher eine Art Roman mit autobiografischen Einflüssen.
Warum ist bisher kein neues Album in Planung – weil sie der Qualität von MP3 misstrauen?
Ja, ich misstraue der Qualität von MP3 in höchstem Masse. Wir arbeiten im Studio so hart an einem guten Sound und dann setzt man sich die Kopfhörer auf und es klingt einfach nur grauenhaft. Dann ist ja die ganze Arbeit umsonst. Wenn es eine Möglichkeit gäbe die Lieder in wirklich guter Qualität zu downloaden, würde ich es mir überlegen. Aber die Leute haben ja nicht die Geduld 15 Minuten lang einen einzelnen Song herunterzuladen. Nein, unter solchen Umständen möchte ich nichts veröffentlichen. Neue Songs stelle ich live vor.
Sie haben immer viel Wert auf Kollaborationen gelegt – Ihre beste Zusammenarbeit?
Manchmal kann ich nicht glauben, dass ich mit Paul McCartney nicht nur bei einem – sondern gleich bei zwölf Songs zusammengearbeitet habe. Zwölf Songs mit Paul McCartney! Auch meine Frau hat schon mit ihm kollaboriert – meine Söhne können von sich behaupten, dass beide Eltern mit einem Beatle im Studio waren. Wer kann das schon? Burt Bacharach ist auch so eine Legende und ich fühlte mich sehr geehrt, als er nach einer Zusammenarbeit fragte. Die Künstler haben eigentlich immer mich angefragt; ich habe nicht an Burts und Pauls Tür geklopft. Letztens habe ich übrigens einen Country-Song mit Kris Kristofferson und Rosanne Cash aufgenommen – ich hoffe er wird veröffentlicht.
Auch mit Ihrer Frau Diana Krall haben Sie gearbeitet, wie kann man sich diesen Prozess vorstellen?
Ich habe nicht im klassischen Sinne mit ihr geschrieben, ich war mehr eine Art lyrischer Helfer. Als Dianas Mutter starb, war das eine sehr schwere Zeit für sie. Sie hat sehr viel Tagebuch geschrieben und ich habe diese Fragmente in Zusammenarbeit mit ihr in Songs verarbeitet. Ihr neues Album ist übrigens die beste Arbeit die sie je gemacht hat. Der Witz und der Charme, den sie auf der Bühne schon lange hat, spiegelt sich endlich auch in ihren Aufnahmen wieder.
Haben Sie diesmal auch mitgeschrieben?
Nein, bei diesem Album hat sie mir nicht viel zu verdanken. Ich habe nur ein bisschen in der Band mitgespielt; ehrlich gesagt, habe ich es geliebt nur ein Bandmitglied zu sein und keinerlei Verantwortung zu haben. Ich war einfach nur der Typ mit der Ukulele.
Sie haben Ihre Wurzeln in Liverpool. Nun also die unausweichliche letzte Frage: Wer ist Ihr Lieblings-Beatle?
Ach so, ich dachte schon sie fragen mich jetzt wer als nächstes den FC Liverpool trainieren sollte. Die Arbeit mit Paul war unvergesslich, ich bewundere ihn sehr. John habe ich leider nie getroffen, aber das wäre sicher interessant geworden...George ist auch fantastisch – ach, sie wussten doch genau, dass ich auf diese Frage nicht antworten würde.
