Elvis did Licence To Kill 'live' in NY last May ; perhaps the studio session for this album dates from then.

Boy, this doesn't sound like I thought it would.

Quite interesting, sounds like one of those self-produced songs where he does all the instruments and vocals (maybe not the drums?), like "Ghost Train"...

Different!!

Well if you are going to do a cover then truly re-imagine it. That is done here. Do not know if I like all the echo effects-not certain they fit this particular song- but I love the intermittent harmonium sound and his own backing falsetto- have always thought he should do more in that vocal range.

Chris is right - there's nothing more pointless than unimaginatively 'faithful' covers. I like him singing in this fragile, high register, but I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out if the overall treatment really serves or enhances the song. EC does manage to effectively deliver the ridiculous 'touching the moon' line, so that's a gain; but on balance, I'm undecided. Maybe it'll just take more time.

Contray to popular belief, there's considerable audacity to covering a Dylan song, because Bob's vocals are so uniquely skilled in extracting the full measure of the lyric. Most of his covers are net losses, I find. But this does seem an intriguing collection.

EDIT: jeez, I just heard Miley Cyrus's take on 'Lonesome.' I'm gonna go out on a limb here - that is good stuff, ladies and gentleman. :o Sounds to me like she would do VASTLY better as a country singer. In artistic terms, that is.

She definitely does not embarrass herself, PD, unlike say Diana Krall and numerous others on the record[Sting for instance and even My Morning Jacket]-handles herself well here and catches the ache memorably in the refrain:

but I still much more prefer this cover by Madeleine:

I don't know why you think Krall embarrasses herself. I thought it was an excellent choice for her and a great rendition - tender and smokey.

It's interesting. I think I like the live version from New York a lot better. I wonder if this was recorded on his iPad, it certainly sounds like it.

Jeremy, the word choice 'embarrassment', in hindsight is excessive on my part. If given a do over, would utilize 'misfire' in its place. That said I find her rendition very boring. As said earlier if one is doing a cover I feel it should be a real rethink of the original. She fails to do that for my ears. I hear no 'smokey' in it but instead a certain monotony in her delivery. She has done nothing to make me consider her version as something I would listen to with any regularity over the original. I am also uncertain that 'tender' is the way to go with this song as it has always seemed to me a self-castigation by the protagonist in the song. I much more prefer Patti Smith's take on "Drifter's Escape" for example- that I find 'tender and smokey' and a song she very much owns now for me.

Agreed. Another example of "noisy Elvis". Not my cup of tea...

This is out today. Surprised I had to go into the second page to even find this thread!

I had streamed this on Facebook back when they were offering the free preview. Listening to it again, it has already grown on me a little. I don't mind the lo-fi recording, especially since I welcome the return to multi-tracked harmonies from Elvis.

BRING ON KOJAK VARIETY VOLUMES 2, 3, 4 and 5!

I'm almost certainly in the minority on this, but I long ago reached the point where, when it comes to Costello, "it's the singer, not the song." By which I mean that, while I think his songwriting is still strong, I think I get more of a jolt out of him as a performer and recording artist than I do as a songwriter. And I love hearing him deliver his takes on other people's songs.

I'd love it if he would really have some fun for the next couple of years recording his favorite songs -- both his take on popular ones and on songs that he feels slipped through the cracks or weren't given the proper attention.

Plus, a covers project might just give him an unexpected jolt-- in this day and age, it's the least likely path towards a song of his going "viral", much more likely than anything he's bound to write himself these days. I mean, NR was a fresh batch of quality new Costello songs and it barely even got noticed by critics.

Honestly, if Costello announced he was gonna record and release a new "favorite song" every day for a year, it would get him the kind of media attention he only gets these days when he tells people not to buy his box set.

Elvis comments on the latest volume of Dylan's Bootleg Series, The Cutting Edge:
"When those albums were first released, the songs 'Subterranean Homesick Blues', 'Like A Rolling Stone' and 'Positively Fourth Street' were radical interruptions to the regular sound of the hit parade," Elvis Costello tells Esquire of that time, when he was only just toying with the idea of writing songs of his own. "These recordings (on The Cutting Edge) are fascinating for a number of reasons. They travel from a snapshot of a solo singer in the same room as some shambolic electric accompaniments to incredibly elegant record-making, whether accompanied by the fire and thrill of Mike Bloomfield or The Hawks (later known as The Band) or the greatest, most delicately articulated playing from the Nashville session Cats on Blonde On Blonde." ...

And is all the hubbub around rejected recordings all too much?

"I don't know that you should 'lighten up' regarding the writer of 'Across The Green Mountain' or 'Not Dark Yet', let alone 'Masters Of War' or 'Every Grain Of Sand'," Costello says. "But I also see a hard-working traveling musician and showman, who just happens to be at the head of the column in two or three songwriting traditions." Dylan pops up regularly in Costello's recent memoir, Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink. He is a bona fide fan as well as a legend in his own right. And like most Dylan junkies will, he has a favorite track on The Cutting Edge. "My favorite cut is the intense, solo piano rendition of 'She's Your Lover Now'," he says of the 8 minute heart-stopper that was left off Blonde On Blonde. "The whole clambake is worth that one performance."
