I know this sounds like a cop-out, but my speakers have packed up - they may be more intelligent than I gave them credit for. I'll wait for the analougue copy on dime and then cast what must be a sonically definitive vote !!

i surrender....i must truly have DIFFERENT ears. version one sounds so much truer to the real sound that night while version two has an eerie muted feel for me to both the vocal and the instruments. i am stupified that 9 out of 10 prefer take two to take one. :? :?

Second one is a lot clearer, cleaner, and full bodied. Bass is lacking in first, and drums are not crisp enough. Bass is almost too booming on the second, but there's a much fuller body to the sound. Sorry, ba, I'm a fan of good vinyl for playback, but this is what I hear here.

I'm not, I was just apologising for the lack of rooting for the underdog!

That was not intentional, ba. I'm not sure why only half the song is on version 2, honestly.

(but I may be playing games, that's true)

i know if it was only half of mine at the poll, your equitable side would have had you re-do it. hence, the "losing" one is mine! :o :o :o

Listening on sennheiser hd598 audiophile headphones, version 2 is a lot clearer, but there's a certain hissy charm about version 1...

All joking apart, I'm sure those more mature folk amongst us will remember collecting live concerts collected on tape some of which were pretty awful but equally some had a degree of clarity that would take you by surprise. maybe we just have ears that were attenuated by the sounds we heard in our younger days. I've recorded digitally with both flash recorder and minidiscs which are alleged to have minimal compression but I'd be hard pushed to say if either were any better than some cassette recordings made by other people. I have often felt like the digital recordings somehow remove some of the "atmosphere" though how I don't know. the clinical clear sound isn't a given with digital recording either and whilst I concur that recording digitally is physically easier (i.e. no tape flips or scrabbling on the floor of the Shepherd's Bush Empire as I had to to retrieve a dropped cassette), I feel many (not all) digital recordings still lack something sonically though I have yet to be able to resolve in my own mind what that is. On my trip to Amsterdam, on November 10th if it's still on, I will be taking 2 digital recorders however - make of hat what you will !
