MacManus & McCartney
Could anybody give me a complete chronological list of the songs in which Costello and Macca worked together?
I´m preparing a private CD with the whole of them, but I´m not sure if my list is complete (it goes from Back on my feet to Shallow grave).
Thank you everybody.

The following songs were recorded as rough demos by Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello together:
The Lovers That Never Were, 25 Fingers, Tommy's Coming Home, So Like Candy, You Want Her Too, Playboy to a Man, Don't Be Careless Love, My Brave Face

So my list would go like this...
Single:
Back on my feet
Flowers in the dirt:
My brave face
That day is done
Don´t be careless love
Spike:
This town (Paul playing bass)
Veronica
Pad, paws and claws
Off the ground:
Mistress and maid
The lovers that never were
All this useless beauty:
Shallow grave
Taking apart the demos and the EC Beatles´versions (All you need is love, You´ve got to hide--- which are Lennon´s, anyway).
IS THERE ANY LACK?

I think Veronica and So Like Candy are brilliant. I like Pads Paws and Claws very little. And I'd prefer not hearing Playboy to a Man again.
I don't like the stuff that ended up on Macca's albums. Too slick. But then I don't like much solo Macca anyway.

The only McCartney/McManus tunes that I like are "So Like Candy" and "That Day Is Done." But the success of both owes a lot to EC's vocal delivery, and, in the case of "That Day Is Done," to the Fairfield Four. The live version of "Mistress and Maid" from "A Case for Song" isn't too bad.

Although 'That Day is Done' is a fantastic song, I'm surprised by how many of you highly rate his version with the Fairfield Four.
For me, its unlistenable because he reaches for notes he should have flattened off. A singer has to know his limitations. As much as I love Elvis the songwriter, I have to be honest and say that he is limited vocally and that he is at his best when he sticks within those limits. Another example would be 'Whay Can't a man Stand Alone?' - great song, hard to listen to - and some songs on PFM.
IMHO, Elvis needs to realise that he does not have to be an Opera singer to be a good and interesting singer. Simple is often the best way forward. Take 'Hoover Factory', 'The Other End of The Telescope' or 'My Funny Valentine' - simple, superb stuff but without any sign that he is skimping on emotion or passion.
Now I will request a change of identity from Scotland Yard and leave the country...

17. You´ve got to hide your love away (Costello version)

3. So like CAndy (demo)
4. So like Candy (Mighty version)
5. PLayboy to a man

What do you think? Does the CD get the essence of the relationship between MacManus and Macca (and the Beatle world) or is there any significant lack?

I think they are still friends, though I don't know of any recent collaboration between the two of them.
When McCartney was getting set to record his album Driving Rain in 2001, I read a piece online where Paul admitted he considered making Driving Rain a dance album, but went on to say that his friends would have complained. "Elvis Costello would have been on the phone immediately, telling me off," he joked.

I have been thinking about this quite a bit. While I'm tempted to agree with you, I find I kind of enjoy when singers push their range. Take Dylan, and an album like Blood On The Tracks. On songs like "Idiot Wind", for example, Dylan aims for high notes that he simply cannot sing well, yet the emotion overwhelms his vocal abilities. And in my mind, it's more effective as a result of this. I notice the same thing on certain Elvis songs too.Jackson Doofster wrote:For me, its unlistenable because he reaches for notes he should have flattened off. A singer has to know his limitations. I am deeply interested on knowing -if someone has any information- how the relationship between them both -Macca and MacManus- goes RIGHT NOW... -
Guess this old thread on this board can tell ya -
