Elvis and the Imposters, Jacksonville, FL, Apr. 27, 2012

Post by And No Coffee Table »

This is the 4th show in Florida.
Elvis Costello will spin his set-list wheel at the Florida Theatre in September

Submitted by Heather Lovejoy on July 19, 2011 - 12:28pm

Elvis Costello and The Imposters will be back in Jacksonville for a show at the Florida Theatre at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21.

The show is part of The Revolver Tour, which features his Spectacular Spinning Songbook, a game wheel with 40 song titles on it. Audience members will be invited onstage to spin the wheel, determining about half the songs he and his band will perform.

Does it get much cooler?

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday (July 22), and are $33.50, $43.50 and $53.50.

It's also exactly two years since he performed at the same venue with the Sugarcanes.

This theater is a beautiful venue and draws a lot of people from elsewhere in the south. I met a really cool couple from South Carolina there while waiting for EC to come out, hopefully I'll see them again.

I love St. Augustine... used to go there often to visit friend.s Cool like college town. This would be one I would check out if I were on the east coast.

Twitter (all from strangerinthehouse, at least so far):
Elvis Costello's spinning songbook at the beautiful Florida Theater in Jacksonville, best pic I could get! http://pic.twitter.com/QISgigEv
Only new thing I see on the wheel is New Lace Sleeves
I hope you're happy now, heart of the city, mystery dance, Radio, Radio - another truly relaxed audience in Florida! #elviscostello
1st Spin - Peace, Love and understanding #elviscostello
He just threw in bit of the kinks' Victoria for the first spinner! #elviscostello
I just got too excited when the 2nd spin landed on Time! Haven't heard this one yet
Clowntime, strict time, man out of time, Rolling Stones - Out of time #elviscostello
All right, Oliver's Army and Monkey to Man! #elviscostello
Covers so far: No particular place to go, Cry, Cry, Cry
Double spin for a Tennessee couple - Everyday I write the book, King's ransom: Poisoned Rose, Brilliant Mistake and national ransom #6?
That version of National Ransom was weird - one ominous, psyched out jam- now hammer of songs - So like candy! Veronica and. I want You
He just threw in Don't Let Me be Misunderstood & poignantly explained why he had to skip Sept. "it feels right to be here" Now Watching detc
Correction: that was Chelsea after Veronica, now I want You and possibly end of first set?

By any chance is the number "No. 9" a Lennon reference? There haven't been 9 versions yet, not even by ba's count.

Concert review: Elvis Costello & The Imposters shake down the Florida Theatre

Songs about love and sex and death.

In a black top hat and wielding a cane, that’s what Elvis Costello promised the crowd early in his show at the Florida Theatre on Friday night in Jacksonville. What he delivered was just that, but so much more.

Costello takes audience participation to a new level. In a performance about 2 hours and 45 minutes long, he and his band The Imposters let audience members partially determine the outcome of the evening. Guided by a Vanna White imposter and a go-go dancer in knee-high red boots, people were invited on stage to give the band’s huge Spectacular Spinning Songbook a whirl and then display their dancing moves (or lack thereof).

The passionate and dedicated showman, decked out in a tweed fedora and a black-and-white, polka-dotted shirt under his suit jacket, took the stage at about 8:15 p.m. and launched a four-song spell that started with the disdainful “I Hope Your Happy Now.” As the night progressed, such “songs of sneer,” as described on the Hammer of Songs that accompanied the Spinning Songbook, were what he did best.

First up to spin the wheel was an ecstatic woman named Victoria, who seemed in danger of spontaneously combusting each time Costello got close to her. The pointer landed on “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding,” a favorite that brought the full, but not sold out, crowd to its feet. The energy was high, especially when he improvised a snippet of The Kinks’ song “Victoria.”

The next spin landed on “Time,” a category that yielded four songs. It was the one stretch in the show that took too much time. Some people seemed to be getting antsy.

But after a sarcastic crack at Fox News from Costello, the next three songs picked up the pace and ended with a couple on a first date, Amy and Jack, kissing in the mock cage.

The music tightened up as the band found a groove with a great version of Johnny Cash’s “Cry! Cry! Cry!” A few songs later, the rousing “National Ransom” was one of the musical highlights of the show.

He ended the set with crowd pleasers. As the lights went down and blackness filled the stage, Costello’s voice echoing “I Want You” made it seem as if the end of the night was near. But the encore was really part two, including some acoustic songs (one with a ukulele). The show was beginning to feel too long, but fortunately, took a raucous musical turn.

The rest of the band returned to the stage for “Watching the Detectives” and raged through crowd favorites such as “Pump it Up” and “I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down.” Having unleashed a fierceness that had not yet been seen, the concert ended in a rock ‘n’ roll fury.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

not that far away...i think there are at LEAST seven with enough variation to be considered DIFFERENT versions! hope he takes up my suggestion to compile.

That might make sense, it sounded quite experimental. I still haven't made up my mind whether I liked it or not. I guessed No. 6 because that's where I thought the count was at. That's funny.

The show in Jacksonville was amazing. I think EC was looking forward to playing this theater because he took complete advantage of the theater, specifically during Napoleon solo, playing Allison without a microphone.

Later during the finale, he kept adding songs. Even the band couldn't believe it. At one point he looked back at the band and Davey looked like he said "What?" We also got to see the famous gold jacket.

I had excellent seats upfront and took some good photos. I was facing the speakers so it sounded a little too loud but I can't complain. It was definitely the best of the three shows I went to.

Best seat for taping, by the way, is directly in front of the stacks. I believe that's because you get minimal echo/distortion from the acoustics of the theater. Should sound pretty good on the H2.

Third and final recording of Elvis Costello's run of Florida shows. This was done fairly close to the stage.

Costello sang part of Slow Drag With Josephine off Mic, along with Alison, but the audience got a little loud at times. I was able to amplifly the parts where he went off Mic to make the performance audible.

Again I split this prematurely on the H2 but I tried to bridge the gaps as best as I could on Audacity.

Overall I think it sounds great. I was right in front of the speakers. Enjoy!!
