Met Elvis Costello haalt De Oosterpoort een zwaargewicht uit de popmuziek in huis. Het concert van de 57-jarige Ier was lang van tevoren uitverkocht. Costello lijkt een oudere doelgroep aan te spreken. Dat is opvallend, aangezien hij nog steeds nieuw werk uitbrengt. Zijn laatste wapenfeit is het goed ontvangen album National Ransom.

Met Elvis Costello haalt De Oosterpoort een zwaargewicht uit de popmuziek in huis. Het concert van de 57-jarige Londenaar was lang van tevoren uitverkocht. Costello lijkt een oudere doelgroep aan te spreken. Dat is opvallend, aangezien hij nog steeds nieuw werk uitbrengt. Zijn laatste wapenfeit is het goed ontvangen album National Ransom.

Tijdens zijn huidige tour speelt Costello het leeuwendeel van de nummers zonder band op één van de vele gitaren achter hem of op een orgel. Het optreden lijkt een voortzetting van zijn laatste compilatie-cd, getiteld Pomp & Pout. Costello beperkt zich niet tot nummers van National Ransom, maar speelt veel oude nummers. Klassiekers als Alison, She en I Want You passeren de revue.

Bijzonder zijn de momenten dat Costello zónder microfoon de grote zaal van De Oosterpoort stil weet te krijgen. Dan is ook te merken dat hij ondanks zijn leeftijd nog zeer goed bij stem is. Een prettige afwisseling in het concert komt als Costello samenspeelt met zijn voorprogramma Larkin Poe. Met deze band speelt Costello onder andere zijn hit Red Shoes.

Helaas wordt de intieme setting die een solo-optreden zou moeten oproepen, teniet gedaan door de afmetingen van de grote zaal waarin Costello staat. Met zijn charmes compenseert Costello dit echter ruimschoots. Naarmate het concert vordert maakt hij meer en meer contact met het publiek.

Al met al is het een zeer geslaagd optreden van een man die, na ruim dertig jaar, het plezier in optreden nog steeds niet lijkt te hebben verloren. Als Costello na twee lange toegiften zijn hoed afneemt voor het enthousiaste publiek en de zaal verlaat, gaat iedereen met een voldaan gevoel naar huis.

During his current tour Costello plays most of the songs without a band on one of the many guitars behind him or on an organ. The performance seems to be a continuation of his latest compilation CD entitled Pomp & Pout. Costello does not limit himself to songs from National Ransom, but plays a lot of old songs. Classics like Alison, She and I Want You are reviewed.

Special are the moments when Costello manages to stop the main hall of De Oosterpoort without a microphone. Then it is also noticeable that despite his age he still has a very good voice. A pleasant change in the concert comes when Costello plays together with his support act Larkin Poe. With this band Costello plays his hit Red Shoes.

Unfortunately, the intimate setting that a solo performance should evoke is negated by the size of the great hall in which Costello stands. However, Costello more than compensates for this with its charms. As the concert progresses he makes more and more contact with the audience.

All in all, it is a very successful performance by a man who, after more than thirty years, still does not seem to have lost the pleasure in performing. When Costello takes off his hat to the enthusiastic audience after two long encores and leaves the room, everyone goes home with a satisfied feeling.
