Wow, that was really underwhelming--a real disappointment. Mansbridge totally wasted an opportunity to talk about smart, interesting stuff with a smart, interesting guy. He seemed really intent on wringing certain specific answers out of Elvis for no particular reason whatsoever--going on and on about the younger generation of protest singers. Why?

Well, you know, what qualifies Mansbridge to interview Elvis Costello? These big media heads are basically dillettantes. Look at the abysmal track record of Dylan interviews. It's pathetic.

In fairness, though, I find it rather fascinating to hear EC going on about the role of contemporary music in historical context. He's dead right that music has ceased to be either a common social experience or an experience defined by moral clarity. He's confronting his own lack of audience face on, and thinking through the implications of what is likely to be the basic reality of most major songwriters going forward.

There's also a quasi-humourous contrast between a quintessential Square and a dude who is infinitely more hip. It's like watching Bert from Sesame Street interviewing Thelonious Monk.

(But damn, is Elvis articulate or what?)

Not 'underwhelming' whatsoever. I like how he got EC to talk openly and intelligently about record industry and world economic matters, allowing him plenty of time to respond with well thought out replies. PD-agree that he was clearly working out in his head a future in the music world given the busted condition of the current model. I seriously believe him when he says this could well be his last 'album' under the aegis of the old model, and isn't it striking that he took great pains to anchor its release in past formats? Quite an homage on his part. Thought it quite interesting that he took great pains to distance his recent material from being termed 'protest songs' taking every opportunity just to label them 'songs' or vignettes. He clearly is quite proud of "Jimmie". Enjoyed this immensely!

It's so nice on occasions like this when Elvis really shows his intellect and articulate nature.
He usually does take on the role of the jester and infuses humor into his dialog so much that he isn't taken seriously enough in his discourse. So it is nice to see a laid-back, lengthy interview with him where he lets go of the jester role a little.
