Fine Tuning column for Friday, Nov. 5.

By Alex Strachan, Postmedia News November 2, 2010

* Cool-cat music man Elvis Costello and hot-blooded political comedian Lewis Black, still seething over the past week's U.S. midterm-election results, are Jimmy Fallon's guests on Late Night tonight. Let's see, Costello and Black. Talk about yin and yang. (A, NBC, 12:35 a.m. ET/PT)

These probably won't last too long on YouTube, as NBC is pretty quick to take things down:

Great stuff, thanks for sharing. I haven't heard him perform Black & White World for a while, possibly not since West Calder Regal Theatre in 1980!

EC dusted this one off one night in Cardiff on his UK tour earlier this year. He seemed to enjoy playing it then, but the version with The Roots was better.

This was AWESOME, and it makes me want to see Costello team up with other groups more often. This appearance with The Roots brought to mind one of the most frustrating details from his King Of America liner notes:
However, I very nearly pulled off a plan to play entirely new arrangements of these songs “live” on MTV with a different band, in a different U.S. city, every day for one week. Although the musicians’ response - Los Lobos, ZZ Top, The Heartbreakers and John Mellencamp’s band among them - was very positive, the money to pull this off was never found and the idea went unrealised.
What a great notion, I wish he'd try it now, it's still an awesome idea for promoting a new record. How great would it be to see Costello team up with bands who admire him and create something unexpected? I'd love to see what it would be like if EC performed a set with Radiohead-- or, better yet, spent a day or two in the studio with them.

The New Yorker profile talked about how Spike was the last time he would get the budget to make a record of that scope, and that everything since has been more scaled down. But I'd imagine he could accomplish something pretty epic if he made a record by teaming up with a lot of different bands in small bursts, recording a song or two with each of them just to see where it took them. We've seen a little of that magic on Spectacle, but I'd be even more interested to see what would happen if Costello was allowed to let his songwriting muse develop some new songs with specific bands in mind. (We know how good he is at tailoring songs for other singers, and this would be a different kind of challenge along similar lines.)

On another Fallon-related note, how great was it to see him bust into a few lines of "The Other Side Of Summer"? Between that and Colbert's offhand quoting of "Tokyo Storm Warning", that's two late night host revealing that they're true fans, as opposed to "big fans" in the Larry Sanders vein ("Maybe he'll play 'Pump It Up.')

He may have mishandled the vinyl, but making a MLAR reference on national television more than makes up for it!

Has Elvis ever looked cooler than he did last night during Stations of The Cross? Sitting at the keyboard, leopard skin hat, dark shades, dapper and slim, leading a kick ass band with John McLaughlin ripping a killer solo over the whole thing.

Bravo. And yes, we want more collaborations from a man with no shortage of those.

This is fantastic, thanks very much Doc.

Several decades ago my beloved Janet Top Balcony used to believe this song was actually entitled "Black and White Worm"

Egads! This is marvelous.

I don't suppose you have his previous Roots performances archived anywhere? They aren't on the NBC website anymore.
