"Kairos"? That's an intriguing title.

"Jimmie Standing in the Rain"

Wow.
That should be nice.

(Why has the setlist surfaced...?)

No not a taper. What type of device do you need to do that properly?

from wikipedia:

Kairos as portrayed in a 16th century fresco by Francesco SalviatiKairos (καιρός) is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment (the supreme moment). The ancient Greeks had two words for time, chronos and kairos. While the former refers to chronological or sequential time, the latter signifies a time in between, a moment of undetermined period of time in which something special happens. What the special something is depends on who is using the word. While chronos is quantitative, kairos has a qualitative nature.

shades of "favourite hour". I don't know, anybody think this may be an instrumental piece Elvis has written?

I bought the Zoom H2 digital recorder. It is excellent - discrete, relatively easy to use, and high quality. It's not too late. I used it to record the solo show at Purchase and it worked flawlessly.

Sorry, I won't have it. My closest Best Buy has it, but will break it off in my ass for close to $200. I couldn't round up any tickets on the cheap, so I just had to cough up $198 for 2 on the DSO site. The site says recording devices of any kind are "strictly prohibited". Whatever that's worth. HOB staff had no probs with anything on Monday, practically non existent.

Maybe you can get TX Fan to record, he is going tomorrow (Saturday). Thanks for the info on the recorders. Maybe I can work that in another time.

I will be tracking the setlist, and will have a report later tonight or tomorrow. :D

Thanks for the report!

Maybe "Kairos" is Elvis' track on Steve's upcoming duets album?

Elvis Costello delivers classics and twists
By CHRIS SHULL

DALLAS -- It should come as no surprise that punk rock icon Elvis Costello played pop balladeer Friday with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

In his 30-plus-year career, Costello has never been afraid to move outside of rock's comfort zone -- his album Taking Liberties (1989) features a now-classic cover of My Funny Valentine.

Success has allowed continued musical explorations. Costello has written song cycles, dance music and symphonic works.

He and longtime bandmate Steve Nieve have also written lush orchestrations to back many of his hit songs. These -- and a couple of new pieces -- made up Friday's performance with the DSO, with Albert-George Schram conducting.

Churning strings accented by pounding timpani propelled Accidents Will Happen; a hymn tune casts My Three Sons with a feeling of deep nostalgia. Clarinet curlicues and little whirlwinds of double-time flourishes in the strings gave the gypsy waltz The Girl in the Other Room a cabaret feel; brass choir gave a golden hue to The Birds Will Still Be Singing.

Tunes such as Veronica, Greenshirt and Shipbuilding recall the classic Costello. But sometimes the dark, moody nature of the music -- and its walking pace, song after song -- settled the concert into gloom. Costello's high, direct vocal delivery hasn't lost its edge, but at times it became brittle.

And some of the orchestrations, though filled with fancy and invention, simply tried too hard. The best pieces were when a band -- Costello on guitar, a bass player, drummer Matt Wilson and pianist Nieve -- fronted the orchestra. This dialed everything back to Costello's heyday and gave a lift to a concert that bordered on self-indulgence.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

Also wanted to note that Slow Drag with Josephine and Couldn't Call It Unexpected #4 were done without a mic, and were flawless. Also, Kairos featured a very nice solo by the double bass player. The crowd were really into the show, and giving EC a lot of love, and he was eating it up. Very nice to see.
Steve only played on Shipbuilding in the first 8 song set, then joined for the full second set and encore. Not sure why he replaced Jimmie Standing in the Rain with Shipbuilding, but I didn't mind. Maybe we'll get Jimmie tonight?
The 2 song set closer of She and God Give Me Strength was incredible. Very powerful performance on GGMS.

Favorite songs of the night were All This Useless Beauty, Girl in the Other Room, Still, the swing version of Detectives, She, GGMS, and the entire encore (especially that version of Josephine).

That's kinda why I haven't posted yet, don't want to spoil for you bro. Enjoy the show, we'll compare notes later.

I will say, the Meyerson Center is an amazing venue for sound quality, and vision. Not a bad seat in the house, very cozy and intimate.
