Tonight's the night for Storm & Perfectblue

Post by stormwarning »

Evlis & Steve play Tokyo tonight and tomorrow.

http://smash-jpn.com/elviscostello.html

Here's a translation of the Japanese text, using excite's very own translator.

"The brave figure in the FUJI Locke festival is also made in charge of memory, and is, and they are the entertainer of a century, and Elvis Costello!! As for the creation volition without the thing [ being exhausted ], new work "North" is also fully demonstrated. There is a thing of a solo piano, and there is a thing of the ensemble of the 48-person organization which consists of a phon section and a stringed instrument. It consists of ballades of 11 music about which harnessed Costello's baritone vocal register and it sang fervently, and the new Costello world is developed."

"and the new Costello world is developed" - couldn't have said it any better myself.
We'll publish the setlists, just in case any of you are interested in that kind of thing...

By the way, you can order your tickets online, and then go and get them printed at your local Lawsons convenience store. "Local" is the keyword here - there's a convenience store every 400m or so on average.

From Costell-l listserv-

Date: Thu, 2 Oct 2003 01:38:13 +0900
From: "Ayako Sasamoto"
Subject: EC & SN in Tokyo Oct. 1
To: COSTELLO-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM

Just got back home. It was a wonderful show tonight.
The sound was particularly good. I think the venue was just suitable
for
that kind of music.
And the audience was very enthusiastic. Even after the show completely
ended, the
standing ovation lasted for quite a long time. I hope Elvis noticed
that.
I found Elvis' voice a little bit croaky sometimes, but his vocal was
so
expressive.

Here is the setlist.

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Center (Tokyo Geijyutsu Gekijyo), October 1,
2003
1. Accidents Will Happen
2. Brilliant Mistake
3. Little Triggers
4. 45
5. Shot With His Own Gun
6. You Left Me In The Dark
7. Someone Took The Words Away
8. When Did I Stop Dreaming?
9. You Turned To Me
10. Fallen
11. God's Comic
12. Indoor Fireworks
13. Either Side Of The Same Town
14. Man Out Of Time
15. In The Darkest Place

16. (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding?
17. Shipbuilding
18. Radio Silence

19. When It Sings
20. Still
21. Can You Be True?
22. North
23. Deep Dark Truthful Mirror
24. Almost Blue
25. Let Me Tell You About Her
26. I'm In The Mood Again
27. Couldn't Call It Unexpected #4

My highlight was Radio Silence, which was the only song in WIWC he
didn't
play
in Tokyo last year. I hope he'll do Too Blue or Impatience tomorrow...

That is just too perfect. I hope he plays more or less that in London. So many great songs... How do people find the excitement of the concentration of the stripped down just EC & SN compares to the full band treatment? Is it as exciting in its own way?

Has anyone going to London noticed that it's part of a 'sacred music' season, or something like that? Well I guess God's Comic can stay on the setlist, but wat other implications might there be?

the keys and voice combination was captivating with steve's maaagic fingers, evlis' huskier than usual sound and robust vibrato. the format really showcases their vocal and piano mastery for an entirely new ec experience... that is, if you didn't catch the costello and nieve tour.
i can't speak for all ec fans, of course, because my musical tastes as of late have been all over the map, but it was exactly what i wanted to hear from elvis at this point in my, uhh, fandom... the concert exceeded my expectations. it was a perfect mix of my favorites and north, which is really beginning to grow on me.

couldn't help but giggle during "north", though. i can't get past the woodland/tundra creatures.

i'll have to think a bit more about my many highlights in terms of music (Little Triggers, Either Side of the Same Town *hooooooooo* and Radio Silence are three... ec's guitar playing on the latter was perfect), but i loved ec's floppy bowing and wish i could have captured it on video. his top half would lurch down, collapsing forward with limp head and arms leading the way. very puppet-like, very cute. some japanese ladies in hats and gloves nearby commented "look! u-hu-hu! He is sooo not Japanese!" no, he's not!! heh.

i was pretty "high" for hours after the show, but then again, i had had way too much coffee and hadn't really eaten all day. nah, it was all the show.

edit: i lied about not wanting to crowd elvis today. whatta fangirl.

Elvis never "develops" anything. Like all beautiful, living things, his world, simply, grows. :D

PB: great photo, great account, and I suspect when I too see the mighty duo a week tomorrow (YAY!!!) that I will also feel it was the perfect format for seeing him at this stage of my fandom. I foolishly missed their tour before. Little Triggers, how exciting is seeing that in 2003?

Other than that, can I just say:

Deal out jacks or better on a blanket by the stairs
I'll tell you all my secrets but I'll lie about my past
So send me off to bed for ever more

You know I was playing that song loud in the car yesterday. hadn't heard it for a while. Great to see your signature quote it, it's one of his best and from a stunning record.
