Can you self-harmonise with anyone else?
I believe its possible to play the tuba and sing at the same time:

I thought about that. I suppose it's a possibility. That sort of thing made sense when REM put out Green on Election Day. Then again, if you wanted to change the world, wouldn't you want to do it BEFORE Election Day?

Put it down to another one of EC's "marketing" decisions.

I remember buying "Green" on election day, 1988! My God, I'm old -- where's my walker...?

Me too. Fat lot of good it did for that election! Also, that just means REM are old, not us!

Can one of you nice people, who have internet skills and something like "free time" at 10AM EDT, make this "live" event available later on to those of us who will be trapped in cubicles at that time? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You'll need an application that can play FLV files.

The thing I most vividly take away from this promo piece is EC's clear statement about the way these songs are sonically opened up with the additional musicians utilized in the recording process- it is an emphatic 'yes'. Makes the wait for the finished product worth the while for me coming off the bland 'one-note' sound and tone of the previous record. I am glad he has expanded his sound palette.

Looking forward to Five Small Words as they've done it.

Was blown away by it live and have listen to the boot of it more than any of the other new songs

I find it even more interesting that the word "single" is used. Is there some kind of definition?

It's a pretty vague definition these days, isn't it? The 20th century concept of a single (a track from the LP that was given a physical release a few weeks before the LP with a non-LP track or two on the B-Side) clearly has no point any more for an artist like Costello. These days it's more like 'a track from the LP that gets a bit more attention than the others in the fortnight or so leading up to the release'. Possibly it becomes available for purchase/download a week or so earlier, possibly it gets a bit of radio play, or there might be an accompanying video. That's what 'single' tends to mean these days.

Hadn't really liked Five Small Words so much in concert...but the studio version? LOVING it. Loving it like crazy!

And by the way--thanks Sweetest Punch for the link to the clips on German Amazon!...A Voice in the Dark...white dinner jacket...bow tie...cowboy hat...so cool!

Also, "Odile, Part 3" is on EC's site...

Speaking of which, it looks like "I Hope" is the Japanese bonus track.

Also of interest-

http://www.elviscostello.com/#/news/Elv ... e+Three/72

I heard Tommy’s version of “Sweet Dreams” before I even had a record contract. That was much more of an influence of my own take on the song than even the Patsy Cline recording.

Wow, so 'I Hope' is a cover!

There's another version here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOK0cYevLbQ

Isn't it amazing - as with Sweet Dreams, Good Year For The Roses, Love For Sale... Elvis has surpassed the original with his impassioned singing and skewering of the emotional heart of a song.

His live version of 'I Hope' had me on the verge of tears - though the original is fine, of course, Elvis seems to add that extra level of intensity.

Has a vinyl version been announced yet? I love the artwork and really want this full size. It would be a shame if this does not get the vinyl treatment.

There's no way in hell NR won't get a vinyl release.

If EC is talking about limited edition 78s, there's no chance he won't be putting the album out in LP format. I think he'd do it just to get a vinyl copy for himself.

(When, oh when, will he do the same for Brutal Youth, Kojak Variety, and Painted From Memory, the three glaring gaps in his vinyl catalog? Surely there must be some way of getting those issued on vinyl, even for a limited edition run...)
