'Prairie' homes in on simulcast

IN MOVIE THEATERS | Keillor says he got idea from Metropolitan Opera performances

February 3, 2010
BY BRYANT MANNING

Taking notes from the Metropolitan Opera's live simulcasts, humorist Garrison Keillor and his Lake Wobegon friends will bring to the screen their popular variety show that distills down-home living from the upper Midwest.

And so for one night only, "A Prairie Home Companion" will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday (Chicago time) in almost 500 movie theaters across the United States and Canada.

"I won't pretend we're the Met and I'm Renee Fleming, but this seemed like a chance we shouldn't pass up," Keillor said by phone one afternoon last week from Phoenix.

"It started when I saw a Met production of [the opera] 'Eugene Onegin,' and I came away stunned and mesmerized," he said in his trademark husky drawl, a voice as distinctive to Americans as James Earl Jones' or Vincent Price's. "It was absolutely riveting. I thought that this was the best use of video I'd ever seen."

If opera can find new audiences at the cinema, Keillor hopes his long-running radio show can, too. Via its National Public Radio outlets, it reaches a weekly average of 4 million listeners.

The simulcast will originate from the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown St. Paul, with 11 video cameras shooting both on and offstage. The format will stay the same, with Keillor's droll comedy sketches and earthy, familiar musical acts. Set to appear is the folk duo of Robin and Linda Williams, the sisters Jearlyn and Jevetta Steele, songstress Heather Masse and Guy's All-Star Shoe Band. The main attraction will be rock legend Elvis Costello, who joined Thursday's lineup late in the game.

"Elvis comes as himself, and that means no entourage," Keillor said of Costello's modesty. "He's also very smart musically, and he's very, very funny. He's very wound up and wired and very intense. He's really quite the opposite of me. We need somebody like that: I cover the laidback part."

Relaxed as Keillor is, his detractors almost always tread on his passive-aggressive liberal sensibilities. Author of Homegrown Democrat and now a syndicated columnist, Keillor and his progressive convictions are strong, but he insists that he has avoided preaching politics on his show "like the plague." What interests him most these days is "silliness," a trait that has been nourished and encouraged on his live radio program. For Keillor, the decision to broadcast live has given "A Prairie Home Companion" its humanity.

"It's not post-produced and ironed and remixed and homogenized to make it sound like everything else," he said. "This crucial decision for it to be live was a purely philosophical decision, and, well, an affection for old-time radio. Most sensible people would have chosen to record it and then fix it."

Music is another other topic close to Keillor's heart. He grew up in Anoka, Minn., in a fundamentalist family where gospel and American hymnody filled out his childhood. While at the University of Minnesota, he discovered classical music; for a few dollars a concert, he could watch musical icons such as Artur Rubinstein, Andres Segovia and George Szell.

"There were no grownups telling me I ought to like this," he said. "All these amazing acts came through, and you could be exposed to all of this without anybody pressuring you to like it."

The mop-topped humorist will turn 68 this summer. In September, he suffered a minor stroke, but appears to be on the mend. Still, what could possibly lie ahead for one of the most successful sagas in the history of public radio?

"I'm looking around for a successor and trying to imagine who would do a good job with this," he said. "I'm sure there are many, many people who could and just might, so it's just a matter of finding the right person."

Throughout the interview, Keillor took his time mulling over his answers, often pausing judiciously to find the right words. But when it comes to the future of his show, he was quick and assured.

"I definitely want it to go on."

Feb. 2, 2010: Informal Rehearsal
February 2, 2010

Now that the house is up, the stage is set, the mics and sound boards have been given the once over, and all the musicians, (except our Shoe horn section, who are still waiting for their plane to be de-iced in NY, and Elvis Costello, who arrives Wednesday afternoon, met over at GK's last night for a little supper and an informal rehearsal...

I'll be there (well, not THERE there, but at a showing of it). Bought my tickets and then found out EC would be playing. A pleasant surprise!

Elvis acted in 2 skits, sang a verse in another bit, and did four songs:

That's How You Got Killed Before,
a brand new song (set in 1937, something about forgotten man, indifferent nation, and Lancashire Station?),
Poisoned Rose,
and
Sneaky Feelings (with three female backing vocalists!)

All performed with the house musicians.

Looked great, clean shaven and trim.

Definitely a great show. Elvis was very funny and the renditions were wonderful.

On a semi-related note, anyone have any idea about the song Garrison and one of the other singers sang? I believe it was called something like 'I Wonder What It'd Be Like If You Were Mine'. I've tried Googling it, of course, but nothing really shows up. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Haven't got time right now to check , but I bet it's a song by or inspired by The Unthanks , recently cited by Elvis in a blog.

It seemed like an original, he introduced it as a brand new song about a
very old tragedy, or something like that. It was very wordy.

Elvis was very animated in the skits. He took off his glasses to read the
long skits. In the first one (the Guy Noir skit) he was a seedy travel
agent booking cruises featuring washed-up musicians who had enjoyed one
hit way back when. This gave him the excuse to sing the chorus of the
fictional hit to his customers.

In the second skit (Life of the Cowboys) he was a "devious stranger" who
came out west with false claims of goldmines. He got into a gunfight and
had a drawn out and pretty funny death scene.

He also sang a verse in the opening number with the whole cast, something
about mother's grave having to be moved for the installation of a sewer
line.

Listened to the radio version last night. The Shoe Band sounded less twangy and like it had more horns than usual. That big band-ish version of Poisoned Rose was so tasty that I immediately bought tickets for the encore on Feb. 9th. Although the idea of seeing Garrison Keillor's head at movie theater screen size is a little frightening.

I'm also very curious about that mysterious new song...Possibly called "Lancashire Station". He said it takes place in 1937. It was hard to catch with just one hearing, but it might have been about a washed up actor throwing himself in front of a train. Does that ring a bell with any of the UK people? Was there a famous scandal?

Yes--it's a wonderful song--also stuck in my head. Really loving it. And it seems tailor made for the Sugarcanes to take on their European tour.

The encore broadcast was a ton of fun! As a nerdy, middle-aged, Midwestern-born, white, liberal I have been listening to PHC for years--seems almost like a cultural obligation. I thought it would be too creepy on a giant screen, but it was great--charming and funny. And Elvis did a really good job--he was in fine voice and also quite credible in the skits. The best part was being able to see in detail what those amazing sound effects guys actually do.

thanks for re posting charlie!

Don't know much about this show, I'd also like the show from 18 April 2009 (completely different set it appears)

I try to share what I can & respond to requests. "Stations of the cross" has already been posted by the Foyle. How about this unusual arrangement of "Leave My kitten Alone " featuring A Toussaint (N Orleans 29 April 2010)?

Bilbao 7 June 2005 can also be found there. I posted it ages ago and have no reason to remove it. Feel free to download and it would be great if someone could attach a link to the wiki.
