-September 30
Elvis Costello
Adopting the King's name and Buddy Holly's look, Elvis Costello is known as one of the most original performers in pop music. Over the past twenty-five years, Costello has experimented with edgy rock, new wave punk, and tender love ballads. More recently, he's collaborated with artists such as Burt Bacharach, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and The Mingus Big Band. On the show, Costello joins McPartland and bassist Gary Mazzaroppi. Featured Songs: "Gloomy Sunday" and "I'm in the Mood Again"

Just looked at the station list, and Ms. McPartland's barely heard in the major California markets.

The nearest she gets to L.A. is a small station in Thousand Oaks, which is in the next county (and L.A. county is ENORMOUS). It's a hot, unpleasant place best known as the home of Erin Brockovich.

And I hate using the computer --- but I just might have to....

Yeah, she's not on WNYC either. Luckily, she IS on WBGO in Newark, which I can get from home. Unfortunately, I probably won't be home in time to listen.

Okay, LessThanZero, I heard it last night, and it was so nice.

Great singing, nice interview, Elvis at his most charming. He mentioned that he doesn't see himself in the role of romantic leading man, which I took as proof that he doesn't read this message board!

Marian called Elvis "operatic" after singing "My Funny Valentine"!

I especially liked his rendition of "At Last". He did mention that it was only the second time he performed that song in public.

She's kind of funny, actually; she said, after playing "Gloomy Sunday", something along the lines of "That's the saddest song ever written; I'll try not to kill myself now".

Anyway, I didn't record it--I meant to, but got to it just a minute late, and figured I would just sit back and listen. Glass of wine, kids in bed, Elvis crooning in my family room--it was the perfect way to end the day.
It's a radiation vibe I'm groovin' on

Someone called me on the phone last night to tell me that Elvis was on
the
radio. I have fallen off the Elvis bandwagon as of late and had not
heard
the Piano Jazz show. I missed Kelly & Regis too:(

So I came a little late to the show, must have missed the talk about
his
parents, which I would loved to have heard, ... but yes, all I could
think
is that "radio" becomes Elvis.

I think he's at his best on radio interviews, and the lack of visuals
lends
a certain mystic and romanticism. I thought he was eager with the
host,
because she was so confident and wise and he was bathing in her
experience,
splashing like a bird in a warm bath on a sundrenched day. I could see
him
ruffling his feathers in her presence, his breast bursting.

I am loving "I'm in the Mood Again," and their rendition was
spectacular,
and again, hearing it over the radio just gives it a burnished aura,
...
and all that stuff.

LTZ~ I don't know if this is the answer to your question, but I came across this link on the NPR website about being able to purchase archived shows from audible.com
http://www.audible.com/adbl/store/nprPr ... ftHome=yes

(Wow, that's quite a link, don't you think??) That can't be right! I copied and pasted the address on the page I was viewing. I thought that's how you did it....but I don't know what the hell I'm doing! (Duh!)

NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was driving through Grand Rapids on Saturday at 10 am.

The NPR site said Piano jazz is played at 10 am in Grand Rapids.

Perfect right? Wrong. It wasn't Elvis.

My hopes were dashed, but it was still a good show. Coltrane's son.

My friend said that this was one of the greatest things he's ever listened to on the radio in a long time. And I was kicking myself I missed it.

Live and on the radio
Marian McPartland's trio gigs help her keep her famous show nimble

By R.J. DeLUKE, Special to the Times Union
First published: Thursday, May 20, 2004

Jazz pianist Marian McPartland, 86, looks forward to challenges, like getting her trio in a night's performance to scale improvisational heights that are both surprising and pleasing.

That's easier said than done.

She also looks forward to her award-winning radio program, heard internationally on the National Public Radio network, in which she attempts to engage some of the outstanding musicians of the day in great music and lively conversation.

And that, she says, is also no simple task.

As for the former job, McPartland brings her trio -- drummer Rich Thompson and bassist Jeff Campbell -- to The Egg in Albany on Friday night for an evening of straight-ahead jazz.

Two weeks later, "Piano Jazz" celebrates its 25th anniversary on NPR on June 4 with a live broadcast from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The guest will be the young singer and pianist Peter Cincotti.

In between, McPartland still teaches and lectures. It's a busy schedule for anyone, but just par for the course for this sprightly, quick-witted grande dame of the keyboards.

"I love what I'm doing. I've got a lot more ahead of me," McPartland says. "I probably have things ahead of me that I can't even imagine yet. I have plenty of dates next year, including some things with symphonies." She laughs. "I can't die yet, I've got too many gigs to play."

The Long Island resident prefers single gigs these days -- she doesn't like being away from home for long stretches. She's slated to fly to Seattle for a one-nighter prior to her show at The Egg. That will be followed by a single show at New York City's Birdland.

"I love playing," she says, adding in her typical wry fashion that "I need the money. I'd rather be out doing that than staying at home and looking across the fence at the neighbors."

She hasn't exactly been looking over the fence: McPartland has a Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting for "Piano Jazz," honorary doctorate degrees from numerous institutions of higher learning, and is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame. This year, she received a Trustees Award Grammy.

McPartland is proud of her weekly NPR show, in which she spends about 50 minutes conversing with and performing with a particular musician -- usually but not exclusively piano players. She's not just a famous figure put in front of the microphone to give the show visibility. She's responsible for compiling the guest list.

McPartland likes to bring on performers she respects and thinks would be interesting. She knows many from being on the scene. But she also goes through hundreds of tapes that are sent in from artists seeking to get the exposure "Piano Jazz" can bring.

"Many of them are not of good enough quality to get on, and I always feel bad," she says. "I can usually tell within one tune: This one will make it, or this one won't."

Her guests have included a litany of jazz greats as well as newer stars like Diana Krall and Norah Jones, as well as performers as diverse as Clint Eastwood and Alicia Keys.

"I'd like to get Diana and Elvis (Costello, her husband) on at the same time," McPartland says. Others on her wish list include sax man Kenny Garrett and the elusive pianist Keith Jarrett ("I've tried to get him for years to come on, but he's never agreed -- I haven't given up yet").

Meshing musically with the guests isn't the only challenge, says McPartland. "I won't mention any names, but some are more lively than others," she says. "It's challenge to get them to liven up and be entertaining, some of them."

The pianist doesn't favor her radio show over performances. "I love them both; it's still a thrill."

There have been quite a few thrills since she started playing piano at a young age in her hometown of Windsor, England. As she grew, she listened to piano players like James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, Mel Powell, Mary Lou Williams, Teddy Wilson and Lil Armstrong on BBC radio. Her interests eventually grew beyond the swing era into the more challenging bebop, characterized by contemporaries like Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. Still later, Bill Evans became important, and is still "the ultimate role model for me," McPartland says.

As a young woman, she startled her parents when she didn't follow the classical piano route or take a job teaching piano. Instead, she joined a four-piano show-style act headed by Bill Mayerl. She also played joints that some people felt were inappropriate for a woman. In one establishment, the piano sat behind the bar, which raised eyebrows. Her parents, McPartland says, "were disappointed because I was a lady playing behind the bar in a club, like I was a porn star or something. I guess it was unusual for a woman at that time."

While entertaining the Allied Forces during World War II, she met her future husband, cornetist Jimmy McPartland, who was instrumental in getting McPartland to the U.S. In New York City, she met her idols, including Duke Ellington. She played with her husband's swing group, but eventually started her own trio.

"I don't know if I could have done anything without Jimmy," she says. "He was so proud of me. I was playing with him and he kept saying, 'You really need to have your own group.' He got me started here and introduced me to so many people. Of course, we still played together off and on for the rest of his career, until he got sick. I enjoyed playing those old tunes."

A gig at the Hickory House in New York lasted 10 years, and stamped McPartland as a jazz star. Her 1950s album "Jazz at the Hickory House" stands with recordings like the more current "Reprise," "Just Friends" and "Silent Pool" as evidence of her strong technique and harmonic and melodic flair. Some of her "Piano Jazz" programs have also made it to CD by Concord Records.

Her secret? "Having something that you like to do," she says, "is very important."

Speaking of Piano Jazz, Burt Bacharach is on the show on April 5th:
April 5
Burt Bacharach
Composer, arranger, and conductor Burt Bacharach is a legend of American popular music. With such landmark tunes as "Alfie" and "What the World Needs Now is Love," Bacharach has charmed audiences of all ages across the musical spectrum. He sits down with McPartland for an hour of freewheeling music making and conversation.

Amazon.com has a lot of editions of Piano Jazz.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/searc ... 72-3853760

I like the cover, it's always (almost) the same. The CD's seem to include also the conversations. That's a pity, I burned a CD without EC's and Marian's talking, and that's a lot better.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.
