Elvis debuting new recording on 7" vinyl

Post by johnfoyle »

This post, by And No Coffee Table , in another thread deserves it's own section.

It's about Elvis' contribution to Record Store Day on April 18th '09.

Elvis Costello - Complicated Shadows 7"

The Elvis Single will be released on the "Specialty” label. Looks really cool and retro. Complicated Shadows is on the album but the flip side, Dirty Rotten Shame is an exclusive song for this piece.

'On the album ' refers, possibly , to the re-recording of 'Shadows on the forthcoming album.

In Elvis' liner note to Bespoke Songs, Lost Dogs, Detours & Rendezvous ( 1998) he wrote -

"DIRTY ROTTEN SHAME" -- Ronnie Drew

Since moving to Dublin in 1989 I've made no special
effort to be seen out in the Irish music scene, but
the place is small enough that people know where I am
if they need me or, for that matter, if I need them.
In that time I've ended up working with Christy Moore,
Donal Lunny, Mary Coughlan, and The Chieftains.

Coming through Dublin airport one morning, I ran into
Ronnie Drew, long one of the unique voices of The
Dubliners. He told me he was starting work on a solo
record and asked me if I had any songs for him. I
rapidly came up with this address from an old fighter
to the cronies who are always asking him to relive
former glories. I thought this would probably come
better from Ronnie's mouth than it would mine.

Now I seem like a millionaire
Who brags of rags to jewels
A snarling pup is wild enough
But as his anger cools
He's left to sharpen useless tools
That tear and graze in fine affrays
Though few are worth the name
It's nothing but a dirty rotten shame.

What's the best way to get a copy of one of these? Are they available to order, or only for sale in participating record stores? What NYC shops will be selling copies?

Gutted about Dirty Rotten Shame only being available on vinyl. I've always wanted to hear Elvis do this, but I've no means of playing vinyl. I'm sure it'll end up online, however, so all should be cool.

From listserv-

Record Store Day tweets:

singles may be slightly delayed due to some evil gnomes (aka
manufacturing back-ups)

I wonder what "slightly delayed" means? They won't get there until later in the DAY? Or does this mean that they're going to miss "Record Store Day" completely?? So these will just be regular 7" singles that will show up in a bunch of stores later that week or month??

I think that it means that there's a very good chance that it won't be available in time for RSD09. I hope that they're just being cautious about making promises and that it'll actually be there, but who knows.

It's also on iTunes and Amazon. Just "Complicated Shadows." No sign of "Dirty Rotten Shame."

So was the report of a delay on the "Complicated Shadows" 7-inch true? I couldn't find a copy. Did anyone?

I did get the "Carpetbaggers"/"Go Away" single.

I visited three Dublin stores taking part in this , Tower ( used to be part of the chain, now indie.), Road Records and City Discs. None of them had either the Costello or Jenny Lewis/Costello 7" vinyl singles. None of them received any , tending to confirm that production problem.

I didn't get anything in Tower but did buy elsewhere. City Discs had a a DJ playing dance stuff at earsplitting level and I got the new Marianne Faithfull album ( second had cd dbl edition for €12) . I got to Road just in time for a 3/4 hour set of songs from Neil Hannon. He did a song each from his albums , in chronological order, including National Express and Woman Of A Certain Age. A request for My Lovely Horse was rejected 'cos it was too late for the sequence of releases! It was great to see Road stuffed for the show. This fab. store nearly closed a few months ago but a rally of support has persuaded Julie 'n Dave to keep it going for the time being. I got the 7" singles by Tom Waits and Camera Obscura.

Here are some crappy photos from my 'phone camera -

Have to admit, though I like the new version, I'm a bit surprised it's the lead track from the album - the one they're going to publicise it with. It's not Elvis's most immediate kind of song... though not having heard the rest of the album, I can't judge what would be best. That said, Hidden Shame, come to think of it, done in that style, would probably be better.

Of course, I'm not sure that putting this out as a single on iTunes does much to really publicize the upcoming album anyway. I paid my 99 cents to get it, but I'd reckon that not too many people even know it's available. And while it's worth it for me to spend a buck to get it, I'd imagine a lot of people who come across it might just think "I'll wait and get it when the album comes out" rather than buying it now and re-buying it in a month and a half. (This is likely enhanced by the fact that it's already a familiar song.)

For the paltry amount of dollars that a single like this is going to earn them, they would have been better off either selling it as a digital EP with a b-side (either "Dirty Rotten Shame" or some other bonus track from the album sessions) or giving the song away for free at elviscostello.com. This is what Dylan did with TWO of the songs of his new album, and I'd bet that the giveaway will likely boost sales rather than hinder them.

That's not to say this isn't about to happen-- it's still early yet. If the official site is redesigned in time to promote the new album, I'd fully expect that we'll hear a few clips or maybe even a whole song, which is something he's done for a few recent albums. But he'll probably get a much bigger boost from his appearance on "Prairie Home Companion" than from selling this track on iTunes and Amazon...

ETA: Now that the vinyl 7" failed to appear on Record Store Day, when/where will this be made available? Will it just show up in stores that sell vinyl singles, or will it be available online somewhere?

I haven't been able to find the vinyl, and no one seems to know when it will be available.

I wonder where it's being pressed...probably Nashville if I had to take a guess.

The 7" is in. Well, at least it's in my local store. I just bought it.

"Dirty Rotten Shame" is nice, I like it. Actually, I really dig it.

It's pure Americana/folk. I can easily imagine Emmylou singing it.
