Jeremy Vine dancing to 'She' on Strictly Come Dancing this weekend

Post by johnfoyle »

Are anyone of you interested in forming a team of 'Elvis Costello Fans' for a tv quiz show?

John Everingham of Elviscostello.info got this e-mail-

After e-mailing Ramy , he replied asking for my 'phone number. When we then spoke he said, even though I'm a Irish resident, I was eligible to take part. He then asked me if I could put together a list of people interested. If I send it to him next week (Mon- Tuesday-ish), he'll then let us know about the next stage. If we get by some kind of audition we can take part, travel expenses covered etc..

This wiki link seems to tell all about the show -

If anyone here wants to get in on this , PM me.

It could be a hoot!

Gah! I'd love to do this but as I work for the BBC I'm ineligible! Good luck, whoever does it! Keep us updated as to TX times. Don't tell us the questions as I want to be challenged on the day.

I don't think the questions will necessarily be about Elvis Costello. From my knowledge Eggheads the team challenges the Eggheads in a general knowledge quiz. The Eggheads are winners of previous high profile quizzes - Mastermind, Millionaire etc.

The challengers are quiz teams who have something in common, eg Firemen, dinner ladies etc.

I've had lots of worthwhile responses. I'll respond over the weekend - this evening I'm indulging my inner moran by seeing the new Nicholas Cage film.

I submitted seven names , including myself.

The BBC man sent me an application form for contestants to fill out so I'll post them a copy and see what they think. As ever, the small print makes the whole thing less attractive than his pitch on the 'phone indicated. For instance, expenses incurred in the audition are not covered.

More later, as things happen/ don't happen.

That ruled me out

Thanks for the email John but I don't think there was a wide enough camera lens for my nose if I made it onto TV. I'd be stuck at the side of the stage shouting out wrong answers!

From listserv-

I've just had a phonecall from 'Ollie' - who sounded suspiciously like Mr
Kyle - about the show...

Unfortunately, to take part, you have to have a valid TV licence (BBC
regulations, apparently...) so this means that we're two members short... so
if you're UK resident, have a TV License and fancy meeting in Liverpool for
an audition (Ian?) let us know asap...

Auditions are due to be held in Liverpool on 13/14 November.
Bearing in
mind that there are currently only two slots (9am and 12.30) for Friday, but
five for Thursday (9am 10am 11am 4pm and 5pm) - auditions last an hour, so
we can repair to a caff afterwards and swap stories until the pubs open...

John and Martin - gutted you can't attend... although if someone lends you
their TV licence, you could be a 'ringer'...

Time is of the essence here - and the quicker I get back to Ollie the more
chance we have of getting time slot.

Plus - we don't all have to attend, they can audition by phone if necessary,
after all, they appreciate it can be difficult getting six people together
from across the country... but it'd be a nice day out in EC's old stomping
ground!

I'll go with the majority, as I'm easy... (steady on!)

c*

This is the first I've heard of this.

I can't make Liverpool on Nov.13th as I've a trip to France the next day . I'll e-mail the researcher to see if he wants to audition me by 'phone and exempt me from the license requirement, seeing as he never mentioned it when he said my Irish residency wasn't a problem.

Good luck to those who take part .

The British Government levies a flat rate annual tax on all households, the proceeds of which go to pay for the services provided by the British Broadcasting Corporation. This includes services such as national radio, local radio, websites and so on. This is a very efficient tax (in that it is relatively cheap to collect and there is relatively little scope for fraud or evasion), and allows the BBC to broadcast its services without advertisements of any kind. Arguably it also gives the BBC an unfair commercial advantage in relation to its commercial services (e.g. publishing), but since the proceeds of those activities go back to fund less commercial services (e.g. local radio), this is not a particular point of contention.

The licence fee goes toward paying salaries to bloated executives who swan around full of their own importance and who spend millions of pounds on lunches and drinks at the taxpayer's expense, who spend heaps of money on programmes designed to dumb down and then have the gall to say they need increases in the licence fee because the current fees they receive are not enough.

And of course the BBC doesn't advertise directly. However there are strategic product placements...

We have things like BBC News 24 which is supposed to be news 24/7 but is actually numbered after the amount of viewers it has.

So ... it has 24 viewers, but only 7 of them will actually admit to watching it? :)

I've reached a new low in monitoring EC related stuff.

A clip of Elvis wishing him luck was shown in a montage just before the She dance. Jeremy is seen looking at his 'phone and on the screen Elvis says something about hoping he does well and not to do anything too strenuous etc. Funnily enough, Elvis's version wasn't used during the dance.

Mr Vine has tweeted the annotations he's making to his copy of the book
