Pleased to assist the Mrs. yesterday in completion of the NY Times crossword for 9/8/12- clue like Elvis Costello, but not Elvis Presley : abr. answer ENG 33 down three letters.

Apparently EC unexpectedly showed up on last night's Jimmy Fallon. He's sitting in the guest's chair when Fallon introduces David Byrne and St. Vincent (she was the one who incorporated the famous "ladies and gentleman, there's no reason to do this song here" bit into one of her recent performances, interestingly).

No idea if he was on any other parts of the show, but he can be seen in the beginning of this video:

Also, a photo of EC with St. Vincent posted to Twitter: http://statigr.am/p/277671348969712517_9537345

On October 12, BBC4 will screen a brand new documentary ‘Squeeze: Take Me I'm Yours’ which reappraises the song-writing clout of Difford and Tilbrook, and shows why Squeeze hold a special place in British Popular music.

Contributions will come from former band members Jools Holland and Paul Carrack, together with testament from Elvis Costello, Mark Knopfler and Aimee Mann.

One of her favourite songs, apparently. As if I could like Tina Fey any more.

Outsourcing the Kids

Mike McGraw blogs

(extract)

So this is what it’s come to, I’m eating a fully English breakfast at SoHo House in the Meatpacking District and making a new Spotify playlist called “Haunting Klezmer Tracks”. Thing 1 and Thing 2 are down in the kid’s club probably making origami figurings of dead rock stars. This SoHo House club is a throw back to a time when children were to be seen and not heard. Hell, here they’re not even seen.

Speaking of rock stars, we just rode the elevator up with Elvis Costello and his two small boys. They’re here for some kid’s birthday party we’re not invited to. I got off with the girls at the party room floor and followed them. It’s easy to play dumb with kids in tow. The mother was at the door greeting guests so we aborted the mission but not before the kids caught a glimpse of a pumpkin-shaped pinata. They made a scene and the mother just glared at me. EC looks good for 58. I got his age from my handy IMDB app where I also learned his real name is Declan Patrick MacManus. Love that app. I told Thing 2 she had a brush with greatness, “that was Elvis Costello!”, I said proudly, “one of daddy’s favorite singers.” Thing 1 chirped in, “I thought you said Elvis was dead?”. “Not that Elvis, the fatter one.” My wife just texted me, “thx 4 the time off Xx!” If she only knew.

Rozy posts -

Stephen Colbert sings Jump Up and talks about EC ( about 6 minutes in to this) in an NPR interview with Terry Gross .

Stephen anticipates corrections from Elvis, one of which will surely be that Jump Up was not , as said here, recorded in a hotel room but in Elvis/Declan's bedroom in Wilton ( quietly , so as not to wake the baby).

A date for your diary - on 9 December 2012, in Florence, Italy, Quartetto Uscita Firenze Sud and Claudia D’Agnone (vocals) perform Lettere a Giulietta (The Juliet Letters ). They are playing the whole album, in order from start to finish.

See page 16 of the concert season programme....

On the Girls, Girls, Girls sleeve Elvis writes -

“Tokyo Storm Warning”:

Fatigue can only play cruel tricks upon your perceptions, but arriving early one violent morning, among the frenzied commuters, with the storm clouds down beneath the tops of the tallest building, Tokyo DID seem like the setting for a particularly brutal science fiction story (perhaps something by Philip K Dick). So thinking “Why stop there, let’s trash the world”, I recalled twenty years of nightmares, actual or altered, to present this thug’s eye view of the planet.

In 1994 Elvis appeared in documentary about Philip K Dick - it's now online -

Fascinating early image - outside the Stiff offices in London I'm guessing- of Elvis. A cropped version , featuring Elvis, has , I think, been around before. The contrast between the way the two people in the photograph are dressed etc. is fascinating. The fact that Elvis looked just like the 'long haired' man just a few months before when in Flip City is example of how calculating and methodical Jake 'n co's marketing campaign was.
