If there's one constant connected to the ever-shifting sands surrounding the annual Grammy Awards, it's that the pre-Grammy night party hosted by veteran music mogul Clive Davis is consistently the see-and-be-seen event of the year.
For more than 3 1/2 decades, Davis' celebration the night before the awards are handed out has attracted the entertainment world's A-list of performers and guests.
This year will be no different. Davis perused page after page of guest lists earlier this week in a bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where he conducts business when he's in Los Angeles. The 79-year-old Brooklyn native rattled off the names of music, film and television world heavyweights he expects to be rubbing tuxedoed elbows with come Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Whitney Houston, Quincy Jones, Tony Bennett, Akon, Cee Lo Green, Miley Cyrus, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Jennifer Hudson, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello and Diana Krall are among the music world stars; Interscope chief Jimmy Iovine, Virgin Airlines and Records founder Richard Branson, Spotify exec David Ek, Imagine Entertainment Chairman Brian Grazer, Universal Music Group chief Lucian Grange, Warner Music Group Chief Executive Steve Cooper, Sony/ATV Music Publishing Chairman and CEO Martin Bandier and RCA Music Group Chief Executive Peter Edge are among the executives.
"And that's just up to the Js," Davis said with a devil-may-care smile.

Back in '09 I noted earlier in this thread -
Transferring Elvis' Girls Girls Girls notes to wiki prompted me to check this out-
“Tiny Steps”: The scenario is borrowed from an old Hitchcock television episode about a little girl who insists her doll is an imaginary friend. When her neurotic mother, breaking her promise, intrudes on their private games, she finds her daughter lifeless in the toy’s box, while the doll escapes into the rushes at the bottom of the garden. Possibly carrying a ticket to South America.

Plot Summary for
"The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" Where the Woodbine Twineth (1965)
Broadcast 11 January 1965
Lew Amack
After Eva Snyder becomes an orphan, she comes to live with the elderly Mississippi riverboat Captain King Snyder and his old maid sister Nell. While the Captain is piloting his boat, Nell finds it difficult to govern Eva, who constantly talks to imaginary friends whom Eva believes are real, including Mingo and her father Mr. Peppercorn. When the Captain returns, he presents Eva with a gift--a black doll named Numa. Nell hears Eva chatting and playing with Numa, but suspects that it is a child from the neighborhood. Eva warns that if Nell takes Numa away, Eva will trade places with Numa and go to the idyllic place "where the woodbine twineth." When Nell puts Numa on top of the player piano, Eva steals Numa away, and the piano mysteriously plays by itself. Nell finds Eva in the backyard with a black girl playmate, and Nell chases the girl away, warning her to never return. Then Eva disappears. When Nell finds a doll in Numa's box that looks exactly like Eva, she tearfully realizes what has happened.

Re: Relatively Insignificant EC Stuff. . .
I happened to stumble across a program broadcast on the Beeb last night (14th) in which comedienne Jo Brand reflected on the art and history of kissing which, with alarming originality was called "Jo Brand on kissing". Anyway, there was this scene in which Brand was seen chasing a man much younger than herself into an alleyway in an effort to plant a smacker on the bloke's lips. In the end, having cornered the guy, Brand decides that she can't be bothered and says "Just when I thought I was getting a tasty bite, I go and lose my appetite" Wonder where she got that from?

Title: Excerpts From Stiffs Greatest Hits
Format: 7" Promo EP
Label: Stiff
Year: 1977
Side A - The Adverts - One Chord Wonder / Elvis Costello - Alison / Elvis Costello - Red Shoes / Wreckless Eric - Whole Wide World / Ian Dury - Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll / The Damned - Problem Child / Yachts - Suffice To Say
Side B - Elvis Costello - Watching The Detectives / Nick Lowe - Halfway To Paradise / Larry Wallis - Police Car / Ian Dury - Sweet Gene Vincent / The Damned - Don't Cry Wolf
Excerpts From Stiffs Greatest Hits A
Very much of its time and very Stiff. This promo EP features a pre Smashie and Nicey style disc jockey playing tracks off Buy 13 to Buy 24. If you get far enough there's an additional bit of the Larry Wallis B Side On Parole following Police Car and also The Damned's flipside One Way Love rather than the listed Don't Cry Wolf.
Despite the poor production quality (intentional I'm sure) these files are big and may well get removed from this blog to make way for other stuff...

Re: Relatively Insignificant EC Stuff. . .
At the cinema last night, I had to sit through the trailer for the new Jennifer Aniston vehicle - Wanderlust http://www.wanderlustmovie.net
On the trailer, EC's version of (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding featured large. There seem to be more than one version of the trailer, but the one with EC on from 1 minute 20 secs is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=971wm7MotnI. This is "R" rated, so bear that in mind if you are at work.
There is little detail of the film soundtrack available online. IMBD does not have it. The best I can find is here:
http://www.squidoo.com/wanderlust-soundtrack2
Is anyone out there prepared to sit through the movie to learn if Elvis' song is featured??

Not exactly an e.c. question or item: I'm trying to find a print interview that bob dylan did about 5 years ago (more or less) in which he talked about how different it now was to tour around America, how it used to be that a small city or town would be distinctively different than any other place, and how, now, things seem to be more homogeneous and less unique and singular.
Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks in advance for any leads.

Fit to print (and print)?
Sir, – Reflecting on the sorry saga of the Ó Snodaigh cartridge controversy, it seems that no matter how absurd or ridiculous the shenanigans our dysfunctional political system disgorges, there will always be an army of subtle wit merchants out there who will assail the Letters page with barbed and incisive put-downs.
How encouraging to see that The Irish Times, the organ (if I may be so indelicate) of Myles no less, will always provide a ready platform. Indeed, a sense of humour has always been a very useful weapon in the Irish person’s arsenal. The ability to laugh at ourselves is like a defence mechanism that helps us endure when times are hard. Well done to your correspondents for cheering us all up. Whenever political debacles arise, instead of immediately exploding in paroxysms of boiling wrath, we should just agree, “You have to laugh”. As Elvis Costello, a master lyricist with lacing wit (and Irish heritage), sang many years ago: “I used to be disgusted, but now I try to be amused”.

Crikey!
http://daughterofplunder.blogspot.com/2 ... video.html
Taking their name from an Elvis Costello song, THIS IS HELL formed in 2004 in Long Island, New York. After releasing a self-titled 4-track demo (in support of which the band had played over 200 shows), THIS IS HELL issued a self-titled EP in 2005, followed by full-length titled ‘Sundowning’, released through Trustkill Records in 2006. In 2007, “the band that never stops touring” somehow managed to squeeze two EPs, ‘Cripplers’ and a split with CANCER BATS, in between the gigs. Years of touring inspired THIS IS HELL to write their second full-length, ‘Misfortunes’, released in 2008:
“THIS IS HELL generally keep listeners engaged in areas where most competitors would have them drooling into pillows or tearing their hair out in irritation. OK, so things get progressively less interesting as the album wears on, but ‘Misfortunes’ still averages out well above THIS IS HELL's hapless competition, quality-wise, which bodes well both for hardcore fans and the group's imminent future,” [was of opinion Eduardo Rivadavia, AllMusic ]
Hardcore punk gave way to crossover thrash on 2009's EP ‘Warbirds’ (Think Fast! Records), which featured covers and new songs, some of which found their way on THIS IS HELL's following full-length, and the band's debut for Rise Records, 2010's ‘Weight Of The World’.
THIS IS HELL features: Travis Reilly – vocals, Rick Jimenez – guitar & vocals, Pieter van den Berg – bass and Mike Sciulara – drums

Ben Bernanke (Federal Reserve Chairman ) and Elvis Costello
(extract)
I admire what Bernanke is doing, he is trying many different things to get the economy moving when he could just sit back and take very few economic or political risks. But then I have a soft spot for the man. Not that I have ever met him, but I learned quantitative mathematics and econometrics from handouts he had made--these were used by my TA at Stanford (in the almost pre-desktop era).
These handouts were fabulously clear (I still have them), but what really endeared me to him was that he quoted lines from punk songs of the time (early 80s) in the top right hand corner.
His favourite was Elvis Costello who he often quoted.

Nice spotting Mr. Foyle. Let's see the ear and eye of the Chairman of Federal Reserve, on the IPOD of the President- what is coming next? Probably will be cited in the opinion coming down from the High Court relating to the constitutionality of the Health Care Law. Less Than Zero indeed when it comes to interest rates and Mr Bernanke

No More Tearstained Make Up is a track that Elvis regularly quotes from in medley with Alison. First recorded by Martha and the Vandellas in 1966, it's the 1970 recording of the William "Smokey" Robinson song by a Marvelletes line-up that Elvis has referenced, playing it on a Irish radio show back in 2002.

Hey Elvis, seeing that your not doing much these days, how about a little rehearsal show in NYC to get ready for the next leg of the SSS tour? Something similar to the Gramercy Theatre show last April Fools Day would be fine with me.johnfoyle wrote:Elvis attended a book launch in New York yesterday.
