Momofuku Graphs!

Post by DrJ »

Picked up the album, on vinyl, at the weekend and it's the most satisfying record since ATUB. In many ways it's son of Brutal Youth. I've been trying to put my finger on the many echoes of other songs on the album that I thought it might help to do it in graph form...

I am not sure I even understand what you have done. As for having a go myself, it is far too clever for me.

No graph but echoes of other albums would be:

Brutal Youth: 38%
When I Was Cruel: 22%
Blood & Chocolate: 17%
Armed Forces: 10%
North: 8%
Trust: 5%
signed with love and vicious kisses

You should throw in a slice of that graph (maybe 0.50% or something) to the Mystery Science Theater 3000 theme song: "In the not too distant future" / "In the not very distant future".

I'm not much of an artist -- and don't get me started on PowerPointless -- but here's a breakdown of some of the musical allusions I hear, including those mentioned already:

No Hiding Place: Little Blue Window, World's Great Optimist
American Gangster Time: Monkey To Man
Turpentine: Dust
Harry Worth: Long Honeymoon
Drum & Bone: My Mood Swings, Shallow Grave
Flutter & Wow: In My Room (Beach Boys), Nearer To You
Stella Hurt: Hey Bulldog (Beatles), Foxey Lady (Hendrix), Chewing Gum
Mr. Feathers: God's Comic, Miss Macbeth, She's Pulling Out The Pin, Big Sister's Clothes
My Three Sons: Forgive Her Anything, I'm In The Mood Again
Song With Rose: Forgive Her Anything (yes, again), Home Is Anywhere You Hang Your Head
Pardon Me Madam: Forgive Her Anything (and again, but it's okay), The Delivery Man
Go Away: My Science Fiction Twin/Poisoned Letter

However, these are merely allusions. Even with the repetition, none of these come off as tossed-off rewrites.

Hey, I hear another MST3K allusion in "No Hiding Place"-- those backing vocals are awfully similar! Is EC a MSTie???

I know the MST3k crew always appreciated EC; there was one episode where Dr. F's invention was a TV where you could view what you would be doing if you weren't watching TV, and TV's Frank saw that he was in a field with a bunch of supermodels, and then EC joined them and was going to play them some songs he'd just written. Other than that, I think they've also sprinkled some EC comments throughout other shows, so it's only inevitable that he would like them as much as they liked him ;)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hears Pony Street in No Hiding Place!

I'll have a go with American Gangster Time
