Hi Platypus! I get al excited when someone from South America joins us. As far as I can recall, you're no. 3! First there was Idle Hands from Chile (a big Smiths fan, hence the name), and then a compatriot of yours whose name I can't recall, though she had a great avatar. Hope Momofuku makes it to BA pretty soon.

Interesting points re TDM vs MF (it's going to take some getting used to abbreviating his new work this way!). I think I really came to appreciate TDM through seeing him three times in 2005. I think 'Country Darkness' is one of his best songs of the last decade if not two (and now I recall - that's the one where Pete was tapping the rhythm intently on his jeans at Hammersmith!). Yes it's too long and yes the narrative is more annoying than anything else (had this exact thought listening to the title track yesterday: 'Yes, but who gives a shit?' 'Turpentine' is great but the rhythm is reminiscent of the more impressive 'Bedlam'. Maybe the more limited production on MF is one thing that's making me feel disappointed I don't rate it as much as most of you. Will keep playing.

The length of time it takes to record something had nothing at all to do with its worth or quality. You think MAIT or TYM weren't "bashed out" quickly? Some of the greatest songs of all time have been bashed out in a matter of minutes. You can like or dislike a song or album as much as you like, but dont use the time it took to record as a basis for criticism - its just plain stupid.

A lot of Blonde On Blonde was written in the studio while the session musicians would play cards and wait.

Astral Weeks was recorded in, like, two half-day sessions, and I think the musicians knew nothing of the music before them. Loads of classic debut LPs were recorded in little more than one take, etc.

I think the title track of TDM is one of my least favourite EC songs ever. It's just so booooooring.

Anyway, back to MF. I am really really digging 'Go Away' and its chugging great groove. Best dance EC tune for some time. I had the roof down in the car today (hot and sunny in the UK atm 8) ) and was dancing in the sunshine when I nearly hit the central reservation of the M11. Elvis nearly killed me and a family of 6 sikhs in a souped up Hyundai Accent Coupe. All of them looked at me as if I was insane. I was eating a choc ice and grinning inanely.

I'm loving MF - It's no IB,GH or KOA IMHO, but it is a lot of FUN, FUN, FUN, which is something Elvis seemed to have forgotten to have (with the notable exception of International Echo). Most of his output since WIWC has been pretty sombre (not always bad....I loved North), but it was definitely time to lighten up.

My Marks out of ten atm:-
No Hiding Place 9
AGT 9
Turpentine 7
Harry Worth 7
Drum & Bone 5
Flutter & Wow 8
Stella Hurt 9
Mr Feathers 6
My Three Sons 8
Song With Rose 8
Pardon Me Madam 9
Go Away 9

I think it's his strongest closing three for some time.

Perhaps because you are?

Glad that you're loving it so much. Is 'Gp Away' going to grab me at some point? Give me TDM anyday!

I have to say that there are many songs on TDM that I do really like....even love. Either side, The Judgement and Bedlam in particular are EC classics imho.

Was the Bobby Vee film made on location or in a studio?

The girl doing gynaecological aerobics on the motorbike had a big part (so to speak  )

Always thought that Bobby Vee was dead, but apparently he is still performing today and is also heavily into S&M

Proof positive that Rick Astley stole bobby's image.

Some thoughts of Momofuku songs and lyrics:

First off I think this is his best work in a LOOOOONG time, and I’m a fan of everything he does. What’s impressive to me about this is that after a dozen, or so, listens, there is not one song that I skip over. A big part of it is he seems to have gone back to overdubbing (is that the right term) and/or harmonizing some of his singing – especially the high part. I just really like this album. Here are some thoughts just a few of the songs and their lyrics:

NO HIDING PLACE:

Is this back to the Bruce bashing? I haven’t kept up on their bitchfest, but is this the latest salvo from Elvis? I like the London Calling meets the Byrds sound.

“In the not very distant future
When everything will be free
There won't be any cute secrets
Let alone any novelty.”

I read into this a social comment that instead of modern man working toward the freedom of the spirit, we seem to be working toward cheaper and cheaper goods.

“You can say anything you want to
In your fetching cloak of anonymity
Are you feeling out of breath now?
In your desperate pursuit of infamy”
A comment on the anonymous nature of modern communications mediums.

“Walk up to me
And say what you said
Let's see how brave you are
When I'm about this far

You sit in judgment and bitch
Well, baby that's rich
You're nothing but a snitch.”
Know that you know how to be dumb….

AMERICAN GANGSTER TIME
I agree with the earlier comment that this is the new/next Elvis anthem. It sounded fantastic live earlier this year and last, and will probably be a live staple for the foreseeable future. Great pop tune (reminds me of Jonathan Richmond and Roadrunner) with some very subversive lyrics (the American flag as a starry rag). Is this about the modern America in which he’s chosen to live?
I love every verse and the chorus, but particularly this bit with the wordplay on the colloquialism about angels dancing on the heads of pins. Very cynical, indeed:

“Next week there'll be some fashionable new sin
For each harlot and each Puritan
Pull off their wings stick them on a pin
And just watch the money roll in.”

MR FEATHERS
I have no idea what this song is about, really, but I like it

“The kindness in every smile that would curl into a sneer
Oh my dear, Mr. Feathers is near “
Reminds me of
“When I smile becomes a smirk. I go to work.”
Also, “Nobody knows the damage that we do
The damage that we do”
evokes “it’s the damage that we do and never know…”

MY THREE SONS
Beautiful and reminiscent of the best of North (I like North, sorry). Elvis as the tender soul in love. Good move keeping it straightforward.

PARDON ME MADAM…
I head this live when he was with Dylan and it grabbed me right away. Obviously left over from The Delivery Man (why was it left off, it’s stronger than many of the songs on that album). Very neat work with the extended metaphor. Not at all tortured. Elvis in top form

Just some thoughts…

Some really interesting thoughts there.

“In the not very distant future
When everything will be free
There won't be any cute secrets
Let alone any novelty.”

I read this as a comment on illegal downloading...

No need to apologise about liking North. It's a fantastic record and pretty damn unique in his catalogue imho.

Such innocent times!. The smiling faces suggest that noone appreciates that this is a stalker's song, and the reason Bobby Vee never takes of his windcheater is that he's packing lead pipe and hose. I dread to think what awaits the two timing bitch as they ride off to somewhere more private.

There is a huge disconnect between the lyrics, the music and the video itself. Bobby Vee is out there watching you and, as Jackson points out, is ready to bring down the punishment.

New to me too. 96 Tears is the song Bowie played during his evening as radio jock.

'No Hiding Place' is all about us, baby, and our fetching cloaks of anonymiteeeeee!
