Dear Friends and Fellow Staffers,

As you may know, the focal point of the EC marathon did reneg* on his
offer to come visit us during the marathon. HOWEVER, I have just heard
back that a major collaborator of Elvis' who is also a current New York
resident will come join us IN STUDIO!

He is Allen Toussaint who created the album The River in Reverse with
Elvis in 2006 and who has been one of the major producers and creators
of music in New Orleans for the past 4 decades as a producer, composer
and performer. He will be coming into the studio with us and will
hopefully play a few tunes as well. With that in mind, I will likely need
access to a keyboard again (Jersey Jim?) and perhaps even transportation
assistance.

Please feel free to announce this far and wide. I will be creating a
promo for this on Saturday and sending word out far and wide.

I'd love for all and sundry to come join us at the WUSB studios. As you
know, this is Radiothon and will be a key part of our fundraising
efforts.

If you'd like to come down and take pledges, spin a few tunes or just
lend general moral support, please contact me!!

Peace,
John O

speaking of Allen... it's worth checking out Fortune Teller on Raising Sand, a new release on Rounder with Alison Krauss, Robert Plant, T Bone Burnett. Hot! The track has sort of a garage rock vibe to it. I love it.

Yes, Allen's performance was really lovely. I sat there for the marathon, I don't know why except that it was Saturday and I had nothing better to do...

One of my thoughts was I wish the Foyles could do something like this....your guys' following of Elvis would probably make for a really kickass marathon.
Why don't you write about it in your blag?

John O permits me to copy this from listserv -

Here's a link to a page with pictures, including a picture of me and
Allen.
With my moustache (to further my adult film career), Allen and I look
remarkably like father and son:

http://web.mac.com/mredison/iWeb/Site

I have to admit, that, while it was all happening, the word magic
occurred
to me many times. Allen was the most elegant, humble, sweet, gentle,
gracious and generous person I have ever met. As opposed to Elvis, he
let me
guide the interview and I actually had to draw him out a bit with
follow up
questions. In any case, he was just great. A couple of revelations:

Listen in to hear an amazing story about his legendary arrangements for
the
Band's Rock of Ages.

His love for Elvis is palpable. He even defended his funkiness (or lack
thereof) and called RIR one of his greatest musical achievements.

The man loved Lowell George.

Oh, there was an hilarious moment during one of the breaks. At the
first
musical break, I asked him how he was doing and he told Bill and I
"I'll be
just fine as soon as I get over my nervousness." I exploded in laughter
that
HE would be nervous about being on the air with US. Actually, once we
got
going and I knew everything was going to work, I wasn't nervous at all.

The performance was unbelievable. Just hearing him warm up before the
show
was phenomenal. During the show, I was just across the glass from him.
The
musician who was engineering the sound and I were the only ones who
could
actually see the front of him. Everyone else got his side or his back.
When
he played "What Do You Want the Girl to Do", I actually cried. It was
one of
the most beautiful moments of my life. "Southern Nights" was absolute
magic
and references the dreamlike qualities of his version rather than the
stripped down pop of the Campbell version.

There was actually a lot of magic to make it happen, a couple of New
Orleans
oriented music hosts picked him up. I lost the keyboards we were
supposed to
have just 4 hours before the show and then, one after another, a better
and
better keyboard until we ended up with an AMAZING Kurzweil that
provided an
unbelievable sound (as you'll hear on the archives).

After all of that, he stuck around to sign CD's and DVD's (we still
have a
few signed RIR available for pledges at http://www.wusb.fm) did a ton of ID's
(he
would even redo them when he didn't quite nail it) and posed for a
bunch of
photos.

At the end of the day, my wife, Marjie, drove him home in my mini van.
Allen
Toussaint rode in my car!! Even more, he slept all the way back to
Manhattan. I can't believe how long he stuck around and how magnanimous
he was.

I highly recommend giving this a listen. Even Allen was surprised to
hear
Betty Wright's Shoorah Shoorah, since he had never heard it. He loved
the
DVD's I was playing of Elvis and he on Japanese TV (thanks to Ayako and
the
Japanese Elvis contingent).

Overall it was the greatest moment of radio I have ever created. It was
also
one of the great musical moments of my life. As Allen played the
extended
intro to Southern Nights and talked about his memories growing up, I
realized that I would remember and recall this day for the rest of my
life.

Thanks to all who e-mailed, pledged and called and all the support you
all
have given. It was all quite a bit of work, but knowing how much you
all
enjoyed it makes it all worthwhile.

Oh, we also played a lot of Elvis stuff, too.

Love to you all.

Peace,
John O

I got to see AT up close at Blues Alley in DC this past Spring. His style is just so approachable. There isn't anyone like him IMHO. Just such a positive laid back vibe. Makes you feel great! AT is a National Treasure!

John Ottaviano writes to listserv -

It's back, friends. The Elvis Costello Marathon will be appearing on WUSB on
Friday, November 7t
h from 2:30 pm - 11:30 pm EDT (7:30 pm - 4:30 am GMT) It
will feature the usual Elvis rarities, etc. from Mr. Edison and myself.

This year our special guest is none other than Mr. Bruce Thomas. I'll be
interviewing Bruce this Sunday afternoon and will replay the interview
around 6 pm EST/11 pm GMT on Friday. With this in mind, please e-mail me
with any questions you have for Bruce who seems quite game for anything I
have to ask. He also seems to be a rather obsessive ManU fan, which I'm sure
was at the heart of the conflict with Elvis. I could especially use any
questions from those who've read any of Mr. Thomas' prose or who may be
familiar with his post-Elvis musical work.

The marathon is part of the WUSB Radiothon and donations will be gratefully
accepted at www.wusb.fm which is now fully capable of accepting your credit
card pledges. If you do donate, please mention the Elvis Marathon in your
comments.

All and sundry will be able to listen at the coordinates below. If anyone is
in the New York area and would like to join us in studio, please let me know
and I will help you arrange transportation.

Look forward to hearing from you all and hopefully entertaining a few.
Thanks to Mr. Foyle and Mr. Perry for all of their assistance.

Peace,
John O

From listserv-

Well, I had a brilliant two hour conversation with Bruce today and much
will be revealed including, for the first time ever, the true reason for
Bruce's initial resentment of Elvis and his ill-feelings towards him that
he has a bad time letting go of until this day.

There are quite a few other juicy tidbits as well. Suffice it to say that
they likely didn't get along because they are so much alike.

The marathon will be this Friday, November 7th from 2:30 pm - 11:30 pm EDT
(7:30 pm - 4:30 am GMT). As the interview came out rather long, I'll be
playing bits of it throughout the show. Afterwards, I'll try to find a
place to post it all online. Remember, we're dependent upon your listening
and your support. You can pledge online at www.wusb.fm or call 631-632-
6901. We've got tons of Elvis premiums including a few signed copies of
Hot as a Pistol.

Please feel free to pass this around the EC online community.

Can't wait to hear the rest of this.

Yes, we all have experienced EC's "sweatness".

Wonder whatever happened to Bruce playing guitar and bass? Nevered happened that I'm aware of. Perhaps he used that axe on Mad About the Wrong Boy. Can't see how anybody could play a guitar solo on one neck and still keep a bass part going though. Sounds like a bad idea.

I seem to recall Elvis hinting at another bass player during the auditions but can't remember where I've heard this story before. Anybody?

I believe Paul "Bassman" Riley was considered to be the first Attractions bassist, but was unavailable for one reason or another.

I'm looking forward to this interview, because I've always liked Bruce (more as a bassist than a person, though I hardly know him as a person!). I hope the interview is available as a download, or a text transcription, cause I won't be able to listen to it tomorrow. That pesky "work" thing is gonna get in the way...!

The Bruce Thomas Interview is fully edited and comes in at just over an
hour. I'd have to say that Bruce is still certainly impacted by the
experience. I'm also happy to report that he may have revealed a bit more
than he planned, but we'll certainly know how he feels after it's aired.

The interview will be interspersed throughout the marathon, from 2:30 -
11:30 PM EST Friday, November 7th (GMT - 5 HRS). The 3rd Section, midway
through the interview, is certainly the most interesting and I'll play that
sometime around 5 - 6 pm.

You can listen in New York at 90.1 fm or online at www.WUSB.fm. If you want
to make a request or a pledge, you can call 631-632-6901 or e-mail me at
johno@wusb.fm. You can also pledge online at www.wusb.fm. We have tons of
Elvis CD's (which I'm sure you all have, but they make great gifts)but we
have some less common stuff like the 2 CD Delivery Man, Cruel Smile, My
Flame Burns Blue, MAIT Deluxe and a few copies of the Hot as a Pistol DVD
signed by Allen Toussaint.

Hope to hear from lots of you tomorrow!

I heard it. They spliced it up into chunks, as we all know, but it was fairly interesting. He talked about his life before the Attractions a bit, how he ended up getting hired at Stiff, and took time to emphasize that he and Elvis were good friends in the beginning. He thinks IB is the best album they did, but he loved playing on GH. He talked about the factors that led up to his break with the band. Apparently the turning point was some time in the late 80s (I think) when Steve was having a nervous breakdown and fresh out of rehab. Elvis allegedly tried to freak him out on stage and that pissed Bruce off immensely, which was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. He alsp talked a little about his work with John Wesley Harding, Suzanne Vega and a few others. He really didn't like ATUB. During that tour, he played a little improv on stage and Elvis said "There's only room for one star on this stage." He talked a little about football and what he's up to nowadays. He was very politic with a Davey Faragher question saying that he hasn't heard enough of his playing to say something one way or the other about it. Oh, and when they got inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame, he got Elvis' statuette and called to get them switched, but apparently there had been an "accident" with his. He sounds pretty well adjusted and alright overall, if a little old. Of course I'm writing this from memory so I probably left a bunch out.

This makes it sound like Elvis threw it against the wall when he saw it belonged to Bruce. If you remember the Hall of Fame ceremony, at one point, I think when he went over to the stage to perform, he dropped his statuette or it hit something and it fell apart. Elvis laughed and held up the pieces. I don't think he knew at that point about the switcheroo.
