I dont belive for one minute what he is saying. Its just a soundbite for a journalist.
He knows and we know that he will have a bunch of songs inside that he will want to share and come the day he will put them out for not just us but a wide audience to listen to.
Right now he is doing what he wants to do but there will come a time when his vanity will yearn for a wider audience......

MP3 has dismantled the intended shape of an album.

This , I find, is the particularly galling part. Why does Elvis presume to apply this logic to everyone? True , a lot of people download a few tracks and disregard the rest of some albums. Many, including myself , don't. I like listening through a whole album. The seemingly weaker tracks emphasis the better one's , they can then assume qualities on re-listening and so. Consideration of sequencing is also another facet always worth exploring.

If a similar argument was applied to literature it would mean the book industry was also doomed. People would just read reviews and synopsis' etc. As the continuing healthy sales of books shows this is not the case.

It all boils down to the fact that if a quality product is out there people will find it.

I think the market EC refers to are young folk - 12-25 - which have always been the target market for the music industry. Also, if you grew up with the Internet, then I would think your approach to discovering music is a bit different... one-off tunes are thrown in with your mix... It could be perceived as chaos, but, I think, as long as technology continues to change (web 2.0 apps/infrastructure changes), it might benefit artists over time... The music industry (aka gangsters) needs to re-evaluate their current business model and step up and accept the fact that they need to streamline their business/industry... it's only at that point, will things change (my opinion only) ... I am sure the fats cats are working on this...

On a separate note - I had no idea that I share the same b-day as E.C.'s dad... sort of cool, I guess... Libra on the cusp.. nice... almost 40 years apart... I'll raise a cocktail in his honor.

I'm between 12 and 25 and still buy and listen to albums. I need to have a solid copy of something in my hands. It's just such a good feeling. And I contantly lament the state of it all towards my mp3 inclined friends, who wouldn't know (or certainly appreciate) a well-sequenced album if it punched them in the nose. I hardly use shuffle on my iPod; I still listen to whole albums when I can. Good albums have a flow that you can't match with a random shuffle. But, I'm an anamoly anymore among my age group, in most ways. Just the fact that I listen to a lot of the music that you guys do gives you some idea. It's sad, yes, but I don't believe for a minute that Elvis will stop making records. Leastways, I hope not.

According to another forum, Costello doesn't make the cover, it's the Zep instead. While this does make him sound an arse, it's no great surprise after hearing about him Happy Birthday-ing Hilary Clinton last week. So the slide into smug, redundant misery continues.

Let's not get into too much of a tizzy here. EC may have parted ways with Jake Riviera a ways back, but the latters talent for shock and hyperbole still clearly influence El. How many times has he proclaimed retirement? How many times has he slagged some part of the world and then returned? How many times were the Attractions over 'forever'? Clearly he knows that shocking statements get more attention than safe stuff.

The full text contexualises , somewhat, some of the extracted comments. For instance , the Visa sponsorship was , apparently, necessary because it was the only way Elvis could afford The Imposters for the April tour.
