I've been away for a while since I went to this gig, but what a great night!
I've put a bit a 20 second video of "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down" on Youtube for anyone that's interested.

Also got some photos but don't know how to post them here.

Elvis's concert at the New Picket a year ago was in the way of a fundraiser for the venue. Philip Hayes has sent me a link to a short video clip showing how the venue looks now.

Those who were there last year will notice the improvement, although I have to say that the terrace/bar area still lacks a little in ambience! Perhaps is looks better at night when full of people.

Hi

We drove past the Picket this afternoon and it's now got a bloody big, fantastic, mural running the length of the outside wall.

Painted in tribute to the Liverpool / Ireland connection via the City of Culture celebrations. Elvis is depicted lifesize from the My Aim is True era ( did the artists paint him from memory?)

Details via this web link :

Link includes a brief clip from local BBC news programme.

Clearly this is a must - see for anyone visiting us for the Biennial. Lots of art in other warehouses near to the Picket in the Independents Quarter

Apparently said mural now has the man's blessing.

News of the Liverpool Irish mural at The New Picket Music venue in Liverpool and in particular the inclusion of Elvis Costello has reached the man himself. Mr Costello whose real name is Declan McManus sent a great message of support this week to The Liverpool Mural Project from Vancouver, Canada where he lives with his wife Diana Krall and their two children.

I received a photo from a good mate of mine in Liverpool and I heard all about the mural and the work of the Belfast and Liverpool artists, I think it looks amazing and I'm very honoured to find myself included in the painting. I'll be down The Picket to have a proper look next time I'm in the city. Well done to everyone involved. All the best, Declan.

Thanks,Colin TB. This was one of my all time top 3 EC gigs, with a smoking rhythm section and Elvis giving it 110%. I even listen to my recording a couple of times a year which must mean something

Sad news from the Liverpool Echo regarding the Liverpool Irish Mural: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liv ... er-3323131

Mural on wall of The Picket is painted over to make way for fire doors

"AN eye-catching mural on the wall of Liverpool music venue The Picket has been painted over.

Bosses at The Picket, on Jordan Street, Liverpool city centre, say the artwork – which was painted in 2008 by a team of artists and volunteers from Liverpool and Belfast – had to go to make way for fire doors needed as part of a development.

Director of Love Culture Jayne Casey, who is on the board of the Picket, told the ECHO the mural had always been intended to be temporary. She said: “People did have an emotional attachment to the mural and we feel sad it's had to go but we are having to move forward.”

The wall has now been painted black with just the figure of Liverpool-born Irish trade union leader James Larkin remaining. Jayne said the figure was set to be taken down and used in another mural.

The painting, created by the Liverpool Mural Project in the Capital of Culture year, was designed to celebrate the links between Liverpool and Ireland. It featured images of musician Elvis Costello and Irish immigrant Kitty Wilkinson, who became known as the "Saint of the Slums" after moving to the city.

As part of its development The Picket will be used in the daytime as a base for city music promoters. Jayne said the changes would secure the future of The Picket's youth slots, held on a Friday and Saturday for young people. She told the ECHO the outside of the building was set to be redeveloped in the summer.

The Picket was founded 26 years ago to give young and unemployed people an opportunity to record and perform music.

Its original site in Hardman Street, Liverpool city centre, closed in 2004 but after a campaign The Picket opened in its current setting in 2006."

Real shame, can see that the Picket needs to seek to secure it's financial future via diversification, but this makes me sad.
