Absolutely True Overheard Conversation

Post by johnfoyle »

Jude posts to listserv-

yesterday, at lunch, near the university here, standing in line -- i
didn't have a notebook or microphone, so i'm going to have to try and
do this by memory, but i'll be as faithful as possible:

"Veronica" begins to play overhead on the piped-in radio.
Two young women, freshman?, behind which lurks a big amused Jewish guy.

"Oh, I used to love this song."
"You don't any more?"
"No, dip, I just mean when it first came out I really loved it."

[pause]

"Well I've never heard this before. Eww. What is it?"
"It's 'Veronica,' by Elvis Costello."

[pause]

"It sounds dumb."
"You're the dumbshit! It's about, um, Alzheimer's and all."

[listens]

"All what?"
"Alzheimer's, you know, old people."
"What's that?"
"Jesus you're dumb!"
"You're dumb!"
"You're dumb!"
"You're the dumbshit!"
"It's what old people get! They, you know, like lose their mind."

[pause]

"Well why is Elvis Presley singing about old people? I can't believe
you used to love something this lame. That's really dumb."
"ELVIS COSTELLO! JESUS YOU ARE DUMB!"
"You're the dumbshit!"

[pause]
[shaking her head]

"Jesus."
"I like Black-Eyed Peas."

[pause]

"Yeah Fergie's pretty hot."

The future of America salutes you, Elvis Costello, and all your
dumbshit songs about old people! Excelsior!
