Favourite instrumental breaks/solos

Post by DeathWearsABigHat »

Sorry if this one has been done before but how about a list of favourite instrumental breaks/solos in EC songs.
N.B. I haven't included any Steve Nieve solos because I've created a different thread especially for those.

Here's my Top 10 (in no particular order).

Any King's Shilling - instrumental verse with uillean pipes (sp?)

Ship of Fools - guitar solo

15 Petals - brass near the end of the song

I Want You - demented 2-note guitar solo, reminds me of Boredom by the Buzzcocks & the homage to that song in Rip It Up by Orange Juice.

Sweet Pear - guitar solo

Shipbuilding - Chet Baker trumpet solo

God Give Me Strength - the fantastic section just after the "I want him to hurt" line.

Chewing Gum - Marc Ribot guitar solo

The Invisible Man - intro

Lipstick Vogue - the bit in the middle where all the Attractions go a bit mad

I like many of the solos all of you have mentioned. Lots more that I can't seem to think of. Here are a few in no particular order:

1. Hidden Charms - Marc Ribot guitar solo in the middle
2. My Thief - the coda at the end, the gal singing
3. Goon Squad - the Bruce and Elvis only section, one of my favorite parts of Armed Forces
4. Juliet Letters -- loads of solos in the whole set from the Brodsky's that are very good. Romeo is Calling - very technical intro and throughout the song, they pull it off.
5. The Delivery Man - the funny rythmic picking on the guitar sound at the very end, goofy, I know.
6. River in Reverse - loaded too, and not just with Toussaint piano flourishes. Particularly like the trombone solo in Whos Gonna Help a Brother Get Further -- floors me everytime.
7. Watching the Detectives - Elvis' guitar
8.

I have to go with Bruce Thomas's solo from Lipstick Vogue, particularly the live versions when they would seque directly into Watching the Detectives.

I don't like the song Swine from The Juliet Letters, but the music is fantastic if you play it loud. It reminds me of some Hitchcock film music, the wipers fighting to keep the rain off the windscreen, the glare of oncoming traffic, the flight from justice.....what am I on about?

The last Minute of "Hurry Down Doomsday" (starting around 2:45 and finishinh at 3:50) is brilliant...even if you don't like the song and even if you like Sting.

Give it a listen. Great sound and changes.
