Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint sluiten het Gentse Blue Note Records festival 2007 af met een Special Night op 17 juli.
Het festival begint voor de eerste keer een week voor de Gentse Feesten en valt dus niet meer samen met de tiendaagse pret in Gent. Op 17 juli sluit zanger Elvis Costello samen met New Orleans-pianist Allen Toussaint het Blue Note Records Festival af.

Twintig jaar geleden werkten beiden al eens samen, maar ze verloren elkaar uit het oog. Ze liepen elkaar opnieuw tegen het lijf tijdens benefieten na orkaan Katrina (The River in Reverse).

Vanaf donderdag 1 maart start de ticketverkoop voor het Blue Note Records Festival (06/07-17/07). De kaarten zijn te krijgen via http://www.bluenoterecordsfestival.com en in het Gentse Uitbureau.

Voorverkoop: 25 euro. Kassa: 29 euro. Driedagenpas: 63 euro.

The concert is promoted as 'a special evening with ...' and I think this means that they are going to play more than just a short 'festivalset').
The tickets are seating tickets, but unreserved. The price is really cheap: 25 €!

22 u.:Elvis Costello with the Allen Toussaint Band & Horns featuring Steve Nieve op de slotavond van het Blue Note Jazzfestival wil ik voor geen geld van de wereld missen. Alleen al omdat ik Costello tot nu toe nog nooit aan het werk gezien heb en daarin dringend verandering wil brengen. OK, ergens is het ook wel omwille van She, die zeemzoete titelsong van Notting Hill, en voor het pakkende I want you.

Ik vrees er echter voor dat ik die songs niet zal horen, want Costello brengt deze keer de heel getalenteerde pianist, componist en producer Allen Toussaint mee naar Gent en brengt een tribute aan deze laatste. Toussaint verdient trouwens alle eer, want hij is een van de meest invloedrijke figuren van de rythm-and-bluesscène van New Orleans en schreef onder meer hits als Working in a Coalmine en Ruler of My Heart.

After that, it was a day off and then off to Gent in Belgium for the Blue Note Music Festival where we were opening up for Elvis Costello (apparently a big fan of Anjani). Gent was quite an experience in that we were right in the middle of a yearly 10 day event known as the Festival of Gent. It’s sort of their Mardi Gras. I have never witnessed such mass drinking, by so many people, for so long, in my life! It doesn’t get dark till around 10:30pm there this time of year and it gets light around 5:30am. I walked outside around 6:30am and people were still at it. I heard sounds from my hotel room window that were, as one band member described it, “medievalâ€

Last Tuesday evening I went to see Elvis Costello and
Allen Toussaint in the beautiful city of Gent. Joyce
wrote that on North Sea Jazz in The Netherlands they
got a rather short show, but here on the Blue Note
Festival we got a one-and-a-half hours show plus
another hour of encores.
It was the first time for me on the Blue Note
festival, but I will definitely come back next year.

Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint

Zullen we eens gelijk - net als Katrina, hadden we bijna geschreven - met de hele gevel in huis vallen? Wel dan: het optreden van Elvis Costello en Allen Toussaint op de slotdag van het Blue Note Records Festival was met enkele olympische zwembadlengtes voorsprong het beste concert dat we tijdens deze festivalzomer al te zien hebben gekregen.

Het publiek mocht dinsdag zo maar eventjes twee levende legendes begroeten en het kreeg daarbovenop twee en een half uur lang the best of both worlds . Er werd gebloemleesd uit de immense back catalogue van Costello, maar ook enkele klassiekers van Toussaint passeerden de revue, en samen deden ze vaak en gretig een graai uit hun redelijk fantastische gemeenschappelijke plaat, The River In Reverse .

Costello en Toussaint kennen elkaar al jaren, maar het was de orkaan Katrina die hen weer in elkaars armen deed belanden. Toussaint - geboren, getogen en intussen ook lichtjes legendarisch geworden in New Orleans - zag zich twee jaar geleden genoodzaakt The Big Easy te ontvluchten en belandde in New York, waar op dat moment toevallig ook Costello verblijf hield. Samen maakten ze een plaat over de vreselijke gevolgen van Hurricane Katrina : de ontreddering, de moeizame heropbouw, maar ook de broederlijke naastenliefde die onder de bevolking leeft.

We durven nog net niet schrijven dat Elvis Costello en Allen Toussaint als een wervelende windhoos door Gent zijn getrokken - dat zou nog al eens ongepast zijn, zeker! - maar kom: het scheelde niet veel. Ze hadden een straf swingende band meegebracht, met de nooit minder dan degelijke pianist en organist Steve Nieve , een retestrakke ritmesectie en een vrolijk kwetterende blazerssectie.

Toussaint nam uiteraard zélf de pianopartijen voor zijn rekening. Onwaarschijnlijk overigens hoe dartel zijn zwarte bouwvakkershanden over het klavier dansten. Costello stond waar hij hoort te staan en ook gráág staat: in het voetlicht, achter de microfoonstandaard, afwisselend fingerpickend op een akoestische gitaar en rammend op een elektrische.

Uit The River In Reverse passeerden bijvoorbeeld het heerlijke walsje 'Nearer to You' , een iets heviger 'Freedom For The Stallion' en 'Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?' , allemaal sweet soul music gelardeerd met gospel, blues en boogie-woogie. Allen Toussaint maakte van zijn klassieker 'A Certain Girl' zelfs een spelletje call-and-response met Costello. "What's her name?" , vroeg de één. "I can't tell ya" riep de ander terug.

Alsof dat al niet ruimschoots volstond om ons tevreden en breed grijnzend huiswaarts te sturen, deed Costello er nog een trits hits bovenop. '(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea' maakte al vroeg in de set zijn opwachting, een volledig hertimmerd 'Clown Strike' passeerde even later en in de bissen volgden nog 'Watching The Detectives' , 'Pump It Up' , 'Alison' en 'I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down' . Toen Costello ook nog eens 'I Want You' ten berde bracht, met pianist Steve Nieve als enige ruggensteun, wisten het wel zeker: dit was de perfecte afsluiter voor Blue Note én een muzikaal hoogtepunt van het jaar.
