This festival is only about 90 minutes away from me. According to a guy I know that has been several times, it's a very informal event and apparently is a real hoe-down. I'm sure Elvis will be breaking out his country and western gear for this one. :D

I am definitely going to this one. I usually have to drive to the Wolf Trap to see him, which is a 5 hour drive for me.

I am very excited to see him again since everyone seemed to think Elvis would be playing Daddy non-stop for the next year or so.

PJ's Journal:

Elvis didn't disappoint. He came out with just an acoustic guitar, and knocked out hit after hit. "Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes," "Alison," "Indoor Fireworks" and more. He brought out accompanist Larry Campbell and played a couple of songs he had written originally for Johnny Cash. Then Jim Lauderdale joined him for a really tremendous take on the Dead's "Friend Of The Devil." Sam Bush, and Jerry Douglas joined the crew for both rockers and weepers. And the whole thing wrapped up with a rollicking version of "Mystery Train," one of my all-time favorites

Well excuuuuse me! 8)

Good to see that the Brutal Youth guitar is still serving him well but I'd like to see him start rocking with the jazzmaster again. Or with an electric guitar anyway... to start working on TDM2.

John Everingham posted this to the eclistserv

Much more info about the MerleFest appearance by EC, from Luke Copeland. He
has said that it is okay to forward his email to the mailing list, and that
he would appreciate it if he is credited for this info, once it makes it to
the wiki. He is confident of the song order, due to the no alcohol policy at
MerleFest!!!

Cheers, JohnE

Subject: Elvis at Merle Fest 4/27/07
To: "webmaster@elviscostello.info" <webmaster>

I just got home from two days of Merle Fest in Western NC. Elvis Costello's
appearance Friday night (April 27, 2007) was the highlight for me. He
played on an outdoor stage to a sea of people on lawn chairs. With
this being a family-oriented "Americana" musical event, I believe
Elvis was unsure of how he would be received. Hell, a lot of us were
unsure. After his first couple of songs in which the crowd sat rather
motionless he said, "I don't know what songs of mine you know, so I'll
just play what I know." Elvis began the show without any
accompaniment, mostly on acoustic guitar, which sounded crystal clear.

Here's his set list. I was unsure of some song titles, as
indicated by a "?"

1.(Angels Want To Wear My) Red Shoes
2.Everyday I Write The Book
3.Veronica (he introduced this as being co-written by the New Orleans
blues guitarist Paul McCartney)
4.Country Darkness(?)
5.Radio Sweetheart (he introduced this as the first song he released
in England....by now the crowd was catching on that he wasn't from
around here.....but nonetheless people were beginning to loosen up and
seemed to be enjoying his songs)
6.Alison (this arrangement was significantly different than it's
original version)....upon concluding this song to loud applause he
stood holding his guitar up high and smiled at the crowd for a long
pause.

Larry Campbell (formerly of Bob Dylan's band) joined Elvis for the
rest of the concert. He played guitar, violin, mandolin, and something
that was shaped like a lute, only bigger.

7.Brilliant Mistake
8.Stranger In the House
9.Indoor Fireworks

Byron House joined Elvis on upright bass for the rest of the concert.

10.(?Shame, Shame, Shame?)
11.(?Delivery Man?....."he looked like Elvis, and sometimes felt like
Jesus")
12.Complicated Shadows
13.(?Life's Companion?....introduced as being co-written with T-Bone
Burnett)

Jim Lauderdale joined the others for the rest of the show singing and
playing guitar.

14. High Timberline sung by Jim Lauderdale

Sam Bush on mandolin and Jerry Douglas on dobro and lap steel guitar
joined for the rest of the show

15.Friend of The Devil (that's right, the Grateful Dead nugget)
16.(?some song about Elvis's hometown Birkenhead?) "a ballad"
17.(?another ballad about a man who deserted his woman and his army
and faced the firing squad?)
18.(?"tears in my eyes.....so why throw sand in my face"?)
19.Mystery Train (this song was high energy....I thought Sam Bush on
mandolin was going to blow a gasket.)

Elvis seemed to enjoy the evening. He had the crowd singing along to
some songs. He had to rehearse with his guests backstage just hours
before showtime.

sincerely,
Luke Copeland

13. Life's Companion (Note: E.C. said this song had been co-written with T-Bone Burnett for a movie but the producers didn't want to pay for it, so I don't know the correct title. This one is based off information found on Costello fan sites)
Possibly for Walk The Line, the then-in-production Johnny Cash bio-pic.

At this point Elvis said that he rehearsed these songs for the twins, who "kicked their legs" and seemed to enjoy it :)
He also talked about playing them those 50's English children's songs which he had to endure as a child, which they will probably "need therapy" for.

"Ommie Wise," which he recorded for the Harry Smith Project, and wrote the final verse of himself. He said musicologists have been searching for years for a final verse where the man is brought to justice, and that they finally found it "in a drawer in my house."

It really was a great show, especially with those rarities thrown into the set.

Marco blogs -

Elvis Costello.

He started with a short solo set of his classics (Every Day I Write the Book, Veronica, Brilliant Mistake, etc.), including a rather disappointing version of Alison, where he jumbled the verses - repeating half of one, skipping another, etc.. Then a bassist and multi-string player came out for a few (hundred) overly-long ballads that nobody seemed to know.

He seemed to be picking songs from the country side of his catalog, but they weren’t his best, and they seemed to drag and blend into one another. Eventually, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and Jim Lauderdale came out and they managed to get through a ragged version of Friend Of The Devil.

That song gave us hope that he’d do some well-known songs that the group could play on. Instead, he told us that they were going to do some songs that they were trying to learn backstage - and if it didn’t sound good, “so what?â€

Grammy winner Jim Lauderdale performs with Elvis Costello at Merlefest 2007 with all-star band; new video in rotation

April 30, 2007, 12:00 am

Jim Lauderdale joined legendary rocker Elvis Costello on stage at this year's Merlefest in Wilkesboro, NC this past weekend. The all star band included Sam Bush, Byron House, Jerry Douglas and Larry Campbell. The band played tunes by Costello, Lauderdale and Robert Hunter. The fellas then jammed on good-time covers hot enough to burn rubber down at the nearby legendary racetrack. Thrown in the mix was Lauderdale's "High Timberline" written with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, a cover of the Dead's "Friend of the Devil," Costello's "Little Palaces" and finally the rollicking Junior Parker classic "Mystery Train."

Still beaming from the experience, Lauderdale commented, "Elvis called me a while back and asked me if I would sing some harmonies with him at Merlefest. Of course I jumped at the chance. I've been a fan since I heard his duet with George Jones ("Stranger in the House")." Some americana purists thought Costello an odd choice for the hardcore roots and bluegrass festival but Lauderdale says it was a dovetail fit. "Elvis is just a huge music fan. He loves Graham Parsons and George [Jones] and his influences are a lot more traditional than people might realize. He's always played this music. We really connected on that level." "This will always rank up there with the best musical experiences of my career."

Earlier this year Lauderdale was nominated for a Grammy for his Yep Roc Records album Bluegrass. Jim has been in awe of Merlefest since his first appearance. His appearances at the festival have led to countless collaborations for Nashville's premier songwriter, including his work with Ralph Stanley, the Grammy-nominated I Feel Like Singing Today and the Grammy-winning Lost in the Lonesome Pines. This kind of creative stimulation and cross-pollination has resulted in a deep rooted affection for the festival. "I love playing Merlefest every year. I'll keep coming back until they stop inviting me!"

Doc meets Elvis

posted by Brance on 04.30.07

Merlefest 2007 is over and the reports are that it was a spectacular festival. I’ve heard several people recount for me the highlights of this year’s event. But my friend Scott Rouse, a Nashville based producer, had what must have been the coolest experience of the festival this year. Scott spent Thursday afternoon with Doc Watson and Elvis Costello.

He and Doc hung out in my hotel room and laughed and told stories for a little over 30 minutes. They both had a great time. Elvis’ “coolâ€
