Two acclaimed ensembles join forces for this special project, allowing each to shrine even brighter. Performing inspired by Romeo and Juliet, including selections from the Nino Rota score, as well as pieces by Kabalevsky, Prokofiev, Elvis Costello, and Leonard Bernstein, the Boston Brass Quintet and Enso String Quartet make an unusual nine-piece ensemble that creates stirring, powerful music paying homage to Shakespeare's star-cross lovers.

Re:Geir Anfinsen & Stockholm Phil - The Juliet Letters 2008

Post by Man out of Time »

One that we all missed at the time, on October 19th, 2008, Geir Anfinsen and a quartet from the Stockholm Philarmonic played The Juliet Letters in a concert in the Grünewaldsalen, at the Kungliga Filharmonikerna in Stockholm.
This was advertised here:

Konserthuset.se

The quartet comprised: Patrik Swedrup and Ulf Andrén, violin, Mikael Sjögren, viola and Gudmund Ingwall, cello.

The show was recorded for radio broadcast by Swedish radio, and seems to have been rebroadcast as recently as June 2010:

The Sverigesradio website describes it thus:

" Elvis Costello:The Juliet Letters

Konsert 2008, Grünewaldsalen i Stockholms konserthus."

"15 years ago, led a collaboration between Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet to The Juliet Letters CD: a kind of song cycle. It revolves around the letter to Shakespeare's character Juliet from Romeo and Juliet, inspired by a newspaper article about a person who actually wrote the answers to letters addressed to Juliet.

Royal Stockholm Philharmonic trombonist Geir Anfinsen sings The Juliet Letters in the Philharmonic in close concert, accompanied by a string quartet from the orchestra.

According to the article in "English" via Google Translate:

Sioen & Matangi Quartet bring 'The Juliet Letters' Costello at Ghent Festival of Flanders

Sioen Ghent and the Dutch Matangi Quartet of strings put on the Ghent Festival of Flanders The Juliet Letters, the fourteenth album of Elvis Costello. It reports the organization. The festival takes place from 12 to September 26

"For his album "The Juliet Letters" Costello wrote in the nineties, together with the Brodsky String Quartet, a number of letters to Juliet Capulet, Shakespeare's greatest love heroine. "It was a cycle of songs about love, life and death and their inclusion has become a cult album," says artistic coordinator Veerle Simoens (Ghent Festival of Flanders). "It's hard to be on a label sticking, because work is no rock, no opera, no rock opera. It embodies one of the many styles of Costello."

Eye for classic

The Ghent Festival of Flanders gave Sioen and the Dutch Matangi Quartet commissioned to carry out the single sheet. "The score is in their hands, they got artistic freedom and going to surprise us," says Simoens. "Matangi Quartet has a very specific profile, for example, they were the first who released a single in classical music. Sioen could be the Flemish Costello, he's Ghent and it's nice to put that link. With his project 1-2 -3-piano he had last year also focuses on classical music. "

The concert will take place on September 19 in the NT Gent, tickets are available from mid-May through http://www.gentfestival.be.

Lyric Opera play The Juliet Letters, Kansas City , January 2017

Post by Man out of Time »

The Lyric Opera of Kansas City will perform " Elvis Costello’s “The Juliet Letters”" at 8 p.m. on Jan. 28 and 2 p.m. on Jan. 29, 2017. The venue will be the Lyric Opera’s Michael and Ginger Frost Production Arts Building. Tickets cost $30-$35. According to Kansas City.com:

"In January, it’s “The Juliet Letters” by the very eclectic rock musician Elvis Costello, known as a “pop encyclopedia” for his wide-ranging stylistic influences. Costello’s “The Juliet Letters” for voice and string quartet shows the composer embracing classical art song.

“The combination of voice and string quartet is somewhat unexpected,” Deborah Sandler, general director and CEO of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City said. “We’re not just going to do a concert, but we’re going to create an environment, so there will some scenery and there will be some movement. It will be semi-staged. That’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to do neat things.”"

Re: The Duke's Delight and Mark Weigel perform “The Juliet Letters”, March 2012

Post by Man out of Time »

On 20 March 2012 "The Duke's delight" a German String Quartet joined singer Mark Weigel to perform "The Juliet Letters" in Essen in Germany.

This was reported in Der Westen.

Wer schreibt heutzutage schon an Julia Capulet?

Or in "English" via Google Translate:

"The quartet "The duke's delight" and singer Mark Weigel will perform the legendary Costello program "Juliet Letters" on Tuesday in Essen.

Who is writing to Julia Capulet today? Yes, the Shakespeare's well-known tragedy. However, in the late 1980s, there was this phenomenon. And the letters were even answered. The compassionate person behaved in the same way, as the answer to the post of Christkind in Engelskirchen in Bergisch. Somehow the matter flew up - of course it was a journalist - and the letter contact to Verona, where the famous balcony still exists today, broke off.

These "Juliet Letters" to Romeos Julia then took Elvis Costello and the "Brodsky Quartet" (a strings ensemble which was purely classical in the meantime) as an occasion for the program of the same name: rather a hike between the worlds of music, classical, jazz, rock or pop.

The man for the voice

And here the Essen story of the "Juliet Letters" of the "Letters to Julia" begins with Angelo Bard and Mark Weigel, who will be heard for the second time on Tuesday in the Café Central in the Grillo-Theater. "The 'real' premiere was actually a test run, in the Rüttenscheider Kultlokal Chat noir", says Bard.

With two colleagues at violin and viola and the cellist Miriam Klaeger, the Philharmonic now studied this almost legendary Costello program as a combo "The duke's delight". The man for the voice was also found quickly with Mark Weigel. The actor (and Folkwang graduate) was then to be heard in the almost legendary "Comedian Harmonists" at the Grillo. The Philharmonic also saw him, who later formed "The duke's delight".

"Actually it was something like the beginning of my career as a singer," says Weigel, who is currently on stage at Gelsenkirchen in the third "Comedian Harmonists" production for him. For the vocal side of this crossover program (Costello loathed this term), Mark Weigel was obviously the first and best choice.

"We were looking for someone with something" dirt "in the voice, with substance, but not an operatic organ with vibrato and so on," says Angelo Bard. That both of them then discovered their common Palatinate roots ("Angelo's father conducted the choir in Ludwigshafen, in which my father sang") has almost anecdotal.

Almost on the lap of the spectators

The demo recording, which took place exactly one year ago in "Chat noir", obviously has it in itself. "In any case, acting dramaturge Vera Ring was so good, even though she was created under almost impossible circumstances that they were invited to Grillo," said Angelo Bard.

A larger room, where you do not sit almost on the lap of the audience and in which the music sounds the same way. "But nothing against the chat noir", we are regular guests, laughs the violinist of the Philharmoniker. Beside Miriam Klaeger, Clemens Ratajczak is also a part of the show - and a "foreigner": Sascha Senazhenski of the Bochum Symphonikern at the Viola.

Lyric Opera’s ‘The Juliet Letters’ delivers creative and emotional intimacies

BY LIBBY HANSSEN

“The Juliet Letters,” the latest production in the Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s inaugural Explorations Series, was a fascinating, creative presentation examining the emotional release inspired by anonymous confidentiality, in a sold-out performance at the Michael and Ginger Frost Production Arts Building.

The project was based on the 1992 album of the same name by Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet, a song cycle of fictional letters sent to William Shakespeare’s tragic heroine Juliet.

The Lyric’s resident artists (April Martin, soprano, Samantha Gossard, mezzo-soprano, Casey Candebat, tenor, John Viscardi, baritone) and the Fry Street Quartet (Robert Waters and Rebecca McFaul, violins, Bradley Ottesen, viola, Anne Francis Bayless, cello) inhabited these epistolary mini-dramas for voice and string quartet, Costello and company creating a series of succinct, lyrically-driven works, the characters lovelorn and confused, lost, alone, angry and, often, bitingly funny.

This production expanded on the concept with smart, compact staging from director Fenlon Lamb, versatile set design from Jeff Ridenour, and intuitive lighting designed by Nate Wheatley with naked bulbs, effective spotlighting and silhouettes. In this hour-long through-composed work, the strings were centrally placed to serve as the primary voice and connecting feature.

In obvious and effective symbolism, letters were pinned to chords strung across and about the performance area, casting fluttery shadows on the three oversize paper panels that served as backdrop. All was shaded in solemn gray tones, props and costumes, lending anonymity and versatility to the stories and characters.

With each letter/song, there was a different story and a different way of telling it. Sometimes, the primary singer was the writer, sometimes the reader, sometimes narrator to action, sometimes all the action at once. The lyrics — witty, caustic, disenchanted, pensive — were a primary feature, the melodies derived from the lay of the text and the instrumental writing in response to and support of these themes.

Each artist played an variety of characters, rotating as lead, displaying tragic moments and comic qualities: Gossard’s gratified belief in “Romeo’s Séance” and her sorrowful subtleties in “Dear Sweet Filthy World,” Viscardi suave and smarmy in “This Offer is Unrepeatable,” Candebat, bowtie unraveled, an unstoppable one-man kickline in “Damnation’s Cellar,” and Martin, heartbreaking as a rejected lover in “Taking My Life In Your Hands,” a young soldier in “I Thought I’d Write to Juliet,” and in the ensemble closer, “The Birds Will Still Be Singing.”

It was a successful, intimate show, and the excellent musicians and crew delighted the audience in this noteworthy production

Re: The New Costelas performance of “The Juliet Letters” , Alcazar, Spain , 2017

Post by Man out of Time »

On 3 July 2014, The New Costelas (A Spanish String Quartet) performed "Cartas a Julieta": Details are here.

Post by Man out of Time »

In Barcelona, Spain, from 4 - 6 July, Quartet Juliet de la Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès and Ivan Labanda play The Juliet Letters. The venue is The Barcelona Arts Centre Barts.

"One of the great names of the Catalan musical, an exceptional stage director and an innovative symphonic formation, stages the Catalan version of an Elvis Costello album that is based on a series of love stories inspired by the Romeo and Juliet myth.

The ancient monastery of Verona where, according to tradition, died Juliet, the young co-star of Romeo and Juliet, still receives letters from people all over the world who write to the unfortunate lover. Even a local teacher was responsible for years to respond to those missives. Inspired by this story, the rock musician Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet released in 1993 a record composed of twenty songs, each of which was based on one of those stories of love, betrayals and heartbreak written by men and women. the anonymous women who addressed Julieta. The string quartet and Costello himself performed the album at the Palau de la Música Catalana in 1995, but, now, we can hear in the BARTS hall a Catalan version of these songs performed by Ivan Labanda, one of the most well-known names in the music scene in our land. He directs the staging of these letters and love stories, the director and playwright Sergi Belbel, and puts on music a quartet of soloists from the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès that takes, for the occasion, the name of Quartet Juliet."

Wait — Elvis Costello Wrote An Opera?

Elvis Costello wrote an opera? Well — not exactly. Costello wrote a song cycle called The Juliet Letters, and it is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.

I’m Robert Wood, Executive and Artistic Director of UrbanArias, the D.C. area’s contemporary opera company. We’re producing a staged version of The Juliet Letters, Costello’s iconic crossover work, at Signature Theatre on July 11, 12, 13 and 14.

The Juliet Letters is a series of 20 pop/classical fusion songs for voice and string quartet. The songs are a collection of letters that could have been written to or from the fictional Juliet Capulet — love letters, begging letters, Dear John letters, junk mail, suicide notes, pieces of graffiti. Popular D.C. theater director Cara Gabriel has staged the songs in a way that explores how we communicate with each other about love, whether by letter, by text, or even by Ouija board.

We have three young singers whose vocal flexibility will amaze you as they fuse pop idioms with their operatic training: Melissa Wimbish, Aryssa Burrs and Wes Mason. UrbanArias creates works that push the boundaries of opera — everything we produce is in English, is under 90 minutes long and was written in the last 30 years.

We hope you will join us for Elvis Costello’s beautiful music!

The Juliet Letters
Presented by Urban Arias

The Juliet Letters is UrbanArias’ latest foray into musical mashups. Three accomplished young opera singers with flexible voices and acute acting sensibility will interpret Elvis Costello’s plaintive ballads and gritty up-tempo rock songs in a new conception by Cara Gabriel.

Elvis Costello describes The Juliet Letters as “a song sequence for string quartet and voice and it has a title. It’s a little bit different. It’s not a rock opera. It’s a new thing.” Released in 1993, The Juliet Letters, with its soulful lyrics and string quartet accompaniment rose to #18 on the UK Album Chart.

Rolling Stone gave The Juliet Letters a rave review, calling it “extraordinary” and “eerily emotive”,
