Win a copy of Elvis Costello's latest album

Thursday September 11, 2003

For those of you used to an angry, bitter and complex
Elvis Costello, his latest album, released on Monday,
may surprise you. North is a beautiful and lyrical
collection of love songs full of rapture and
poignancy.
Interviewing Costello last month, Simon Hattenstone
noted: "The 11 songs, all written at the piano... tell
the story of love lost and love found. The early songs
are low, melancholic and regretful. The later songs
are ecstatic. The album works as a song cycle."

The album also sees him reunite with the Brodsky
Quartet, with whom he collaborated on the acclaimed
album The Juliet Letters. And if you're wondering why
it's called North, "That's where I'm headed", says
Costello.

Talking about his album, Costello said, "My intention
was ...to make something beautiful. It's the only
record I've ever made that aspired to beauty as the
prime objective. That's really all I was trying to do.
Make something beautiful."

We've got five copies of the album and a further three
limited edition CD/DVD versions of North to give away
to Guardian Unlimited readers. Fancy a copy? Email us
at arts.competitions@guardianunlimited.co.uk with your
full postal address (don't forget this bit) by Tuesday
September 23. Winners only will be contacted.
