Is it me or is 'Lover's walk' based on 'Lover's Rock' from London Calling?

(just like the intro to 'Rudie can't fail', sound just like the intro to another EC song that I can't remember right now)
I'm not buying my share of souvenirs

Looking more closely at these two images -

I find myself wondering about the alterations. Besides the flexes 'n stuff on the floor being removed has, perhaps, Elvis been given red shoes ? I haven't seen any other prints of the photo featuring feet so maybe from the knees down is a generated image.

Is Rock and Roll Music a live compilation?

These two collections just feel to me like those cheesy comps you see advertised in the middle of the night on the tube. Don't see any reason to purchase them.

Do you question its rock & roll credentials or do you just not like the song?
It's not my favorite song, but I could probably find something else that, I don't know, rocks more than that one.

And thanks for the confirmation on the photo! RIP Robert Quine.

With this comment in mind...
Bill Levenson is working with Elvis on a series of "thematic" comps. Rock and Roll Music might be the first of these.
...I suspect Rock And Roll Music will be followed by Pop Music and Ballads and maybe a fourth title (any suggestions?), and eventually they'll all be packaged together as a box set.

How many times are they going to re-package the same stuff?

It can't be a live compilation, because a couple of those songs were never played live. It's possible that there are some live tracks in there somewhere, but I wouldn't count on it.

I think both of these compilations are aimed at new and casual fans.

I can see Covers being part of such a set. Rarities would be nice too. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

I fancy Lust Songs, Odes to Revenge , Gloom And Guilt, and Anthems of Loathing, Jealousy and Disgust

They could call the box set Withering Sarcasm: The 120 Month Ordeal

If they are going to compile thematic albums, why not include tracks of his recent albums (Universal Music has the rights to them). 'Rock and Roll Music' could include: Tear Of Your Own Head, 45, Dust, Bedlam, Monkey to man,...

"The Best of the First 10 Years" is a very similar compilation to this one:-

http://www.elviscostello.info/disc/offi ... fo_a12.htm

19/22 tracks are the same.

Red Shoes, Amost Blue and New Lace Sleeves replace New Amsterdam, Watch Your Step and Love Field.

Shame they couldn't squeeze New Amsterdam on.

Looking at the RnR compilation cover the feet do seem digitally created: Look at how the title obscures where the join should be. These compilations look appalling. Maybe I shouldn't be annoyed because as an EC neophyte in 1989 I was quite happy to have Girls Girls Girls as a "story so far" type comp. But these look look awful, from the covers anyway.

It'll be interesting to see what the Hip-O reissues are like generally but if it's more of the same: re-jigged notes, final extra tracks, count me out. Look at how the Neil Young Archive is starting to come out: a similar EC project would be good. Digital downloads of all gigs on a tour would be appealing. EC has a core, smart, niche audience who would be quite happy to support an strong online presence, but no-one is willing to offer it. More CDs with Pump It Up, great.

I guess this is good news if you were already planning to buy it and bad news if you now feel forced to buy it.

The Rock And Roll Music compilation includes two unreleased tracks: "Welcome To The Working Week" is a demo, and "Honey, Are You Straight Or Are You Blind?" is an alternate version.

Also, "Mystery Dance" and "You Belong To Me" are the Hollywood High versions (already available on the Armed Forces bonus disc).

22. I Want You

Barcode is 602517260917. Label is Hip-O Records and list is 13.98.

Elvis Costello Rock & Roll Music is what is in the first of a series of crafted themed releases. Elvis picked the tracks on this collection. It contains what the one sheet says are two previously unreleased tracks.

1. Lipstick Vogue
2. No Action
3. Big Tears
4. (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
5. This Year's Girl
6. Miracle Man

Label is Hip-o Records. Bar code is 602517260924. List is 13.98

The first 11 CD's will come out on 05-01-07 as previously listed. The will be in digi packs and will also have a an obi-sleeve for a Japanese import look.

Now the weird news, they will be the U.S. versions, not the UK versions.
All will be 13.98 list and have no bonus tracks that I am aware of.

I wish they would have rolled them out say about 3-4 a month instead of all of them at the same time.

I wonder if the so called Deluxe Versions will all be rolled out in one street date or if they will stager them. I love how ElvisCostello.com doesn't even have this information yet.

I also guess this is good news for regurgitating the Board discussions about reissuing these CDs and putting out unreleased tracks.

Erm, excuse my ignorance, but what actually is a 'digi-pack'? And what is the 'Spkg' abbreviation referring to next to the titles in Amazon?

Maybe there's a spoken-word (Spkg) disc with each one, with Elvis talking through the songs?

And spkg: manufacturer of the digipack? http://www.kellysearch.com/us-company-900241340.html

Aha, I see - digipacks are those nice slim, snug CD cases - not those nasty plasticky jewel cases!

Don't think I'll be buying them, however, unless there are incredible extras. Doesn't sound as though there will be, though.

Well, what's going on with these "deluxe" editions that have been mentioned? I mean, surely a demo of Working Week would show up on a deluxe version of MAIT. And the alternate Honey Are you... could be on a deluxe B & C. So are these two unreleased tracks going to show up later on deluxe editions?

Could be... but the mentions of deluxe editions have been awfully sketchy so far, and I don't think it's safe to assume that there will be deluxe versions of every album. The only specific title that's been mentioned is MAIT, and even that was offered tentatively: "If it all comes together as planned, the deluxe reissue of My Aim Is True should be really special."

I e-mailed Roberta Bayley , complimenting here on the R'n R photo and drawing her attention to the discusssion here .

She replied -

John,

The photo in question was taken by me in 1978 at CBGBs where Elvis joined Richard Hell and the Voidoids onstage for a few songs, including "Shattered" by the Rolling Stones. The gig was a benefit for the St. Marks Church Poetry Project. Back then EC and I were good friends and we spent a lot of time together. The photos I took that night were used for CBS publicity shots for Armed Forces.

Recently Elvis got in touch with me through his wife's lawyer about
using this photo for the cover of R & R music. They asked if I would
mind if it was retouched to shadow out the Voidoids and crop out
Richard Hell. I didn't mind and I got in touch with guitarist Ivan
Julian who was bemused but also OK with it. Unfortunately Bob Quine has
died and no one knew where Jerry the bass player was.

Yes, they added in the shoes, they borrowed them from somebody and shot them seperately. Elvis was indeed wearing pointy shoes that night but
they were not red! Nick Lowe has been caught wearing red shoes but to
my knowledge Elvis has not.

You can post this info on the forum, and you can give my website

http://www.robertabayley.com/

if you would, where there are lots of pics of EC from
the "olden days". Yes, I do sell prints. You can contact Guy White who
reps me in England.

Both Elvis and Diana Krall have purchased prints from me.

Best,

Roberta Bayley
