Either Side of the Same Town

Post by SweetPear »

I've been looking for the words to the song "Either Side of the Same Town". I've searched and searched but have come up with nothing.
I find it hard to believe that I cannot find these lyrics anywhere...even on any Jerry Ragovoy sites.
Can anyone help me out?

Really it's no big deal...but my husband and I have kind of a little competition going about this. We saw EC this summer and he played that song. Two days ago I get Howard Tate's new CD in the mail (which is great, btw). Hubby sent it to me. He said he remembered EC doing this song and he wanted me to have it (because of some personal shit going on between us). He was particularly interested in the words and I guess he thought they'd be printed in Howard's CD...but they're not. He said he's been searching everywhere for them but didn't find them. I said oh, that's ridiculous, I'LL FIND THEM! But neither one of us has found them yet. He keeps asking me~ so, did ya find them yet??
(And it's not fair for me to ask anyone on "that Elvis site" either.)
But I never listen to anything he says anyway!!
So c'mon somebody...point me in the right direction!!
I'm not angry anymore....

They were posted by John Foyle on the thread "Lyrics to new Elvis Song" some time back. Here they are:

Either Side Of The Same Town

- Elvis Costello and Jerry Ragavoy (ASCAP)

Nothing can ever be the same
All of the promises we made seem hollow
But there`s still some streets in this town
Oh , the`re marked , the`re marked with your shadow
So if you see me , look surprised
Well, well , well , if you don`t ,
Oh , just pass me by
And I may , I may even brush your sleeve
Oh, as you turn around , turn around and leave

Now it`s hard to act like strangers
When we used to be so strong
Everthing is changing
And most of it is wrong
What do we know of anything
Two fools of some renown
Either side , either side of the same town

Somewhere there`s a light
Oh , I can sense it
Though I may fall back again
Oh , I know , yes , I know it`s a fight
Oh , but I must , Lord , I must
Withstand the strain

Now it`s hard to keep ignoring someone you recognise
And if I seem contented
Well , that`s only my disguise
What do we know of anything
Two fools of some renown
Either side , either side of the same town
Oh , yeah , either side , either side of the same town

No indeed, that would never work out!

Aww, I knew you guys wouldn't let me down! My husand said that about this site because he KNEW that I'd find the answer right away....and see? He was right!

Thanks much Bamboo. I must have missed that earlier thread or perhaps it was before my time here . Anyway, thank you ! :)

Thanks Bamboo for going to the trouble to get these words. You said John Foyle had them on another thread. Do you know where he found them or was this his own transcription?

John~where did you find these lyrics written? It's all just curiosity because I didn't find them anywhere.

I merely listened real close to Howard`s recording and wrote them down . I`ve since heard a recording of one of Elvis` live performance of it ( besides actually seeing him do it live at Wolftrap) and reckon I got them right.

Taken with the North lyrics I see them as a near perfect bridge between WIWC and them. Read them together and you`ll see what I mean.
