Rank North

Post by King Hoarse »

Between ranking All This Useless Beauty and this one I’ve realized I’d fallen out of love with my girlfriend of 5 years (I stopped dreaming, to paraphrase), moved out of our flat (which is empty now) and am flying to Brighton on Tuesday to see a girl I met on our autumn tour there who I’d tell you all about if I was less of a gentleman. In short, I’m in the mood again.

1. You Turned To Me
2. I’m In The Mood Again
3. Can You Be True?
4. Fallen
5. You Left Me In The Dark
6. Still
(Impatience, which should’ve been a b side, and they could’ve slapped on North as a bonus track *)
7. When It Sings
8. When Did I Stop Dreaming?
9. Someone Took The Words Away
10. Let Me Tell You About Her
11. When Green Eyes Turn Blue (the only one I can’t enjoy, partly because of the vibrato, although I like the darkness bit)

I still wish someone would’ve taken the words away and slapped the instrumental coda of that track onto the end of You Left Me In The Dark instead. Musically, it’s probably my favourite part of the album but the words and vocal melody do little for me.

I like When Did I Stop Dreaming a lot now, but I remember it as terribly awkward to hear live because Elvis so desperately wanted the audience to get into it that he sang it too loud, overemoted completely and waved his arms a lot to illustrate the words that clearly demanded less.

I hope these delicate songs get aired more on the upcoming tour and people won’t hassle him to pump it up.

(But we'll be running out of records to rank soon. Elvis has better step it up a gear or two!)

* PS. I thought Impatience was a 'bonus track' on all editions, and I'm glad to hear it's not. Even though it's great it breaks the mood.

1. Fallen
2. When It Sings
3. You Turned To Me
4. When Did I Stop Dreaming?
5. Someone Took The Words Away
6. You Left Me In The Dark
7. When Green Eyes Turn Blue
8. I’m In The Mood Again
9. Can You Be True?
10. Still
11. Let Me Tell You About Her

I love this album, and I don't hate any of the songs. The ones at the bottom of my list are three stars out of five. And I think I like the sadder songs than the happy ones.

Note : Though I like the song very much I'm not ranking Impatience (wasn't it a bonus track ?)

01. Still (from day one my favourite song on the album, and imho one of the loveliest things Elvis has ever written)
02. I’m In The Mood Again
03. When It Sings
04. You Turned To Me
05. Fallen
06. Someone Took The Words Away
07. Let Me Tell You About Her
08. Can You Be True?
09. When Did I Stop Dreaming?
10. When Green Eyes Turn Blue
11. You Left Me In The Dark
If you don't know what is wrong with me
Then you don't know what you've missed

This is such a fabulous album, I too hestitate to put anything at the bottom, but here goes:

1. Let Me Tell You About Her
2. When Did I Stop Dreaming?
3. Still
4. You Turned To Me
5. I'm in the Mood Again
6. When It Sings
7. Fallen
8. Someone Took the Words Away
9. When Green Eyes Turn Blue
10. You Left Me In the Dark
11. Can You Be True?

"Impatience" isn't even on my CD :?

I actually think these tracks sound better when you hear them singly -- when you listen to the album straight through they compete with each other too much... but when they pop up in the middle of a shuffle, when you least expect it, they sort of render everything else you've been listening to irrelevant.

1. Fallen
2. Still
3. Let Me Tell You About Her
4. I'm in the Mood Again
5. You Turned To Me
6. When Did I Stop Dreaming?
7. Can You Be True?
8. Someone Took the Words Away
9. When It Sings
10. When Green Eyes Turn Blue
11. You Left Me In the Dark

'Fallen' is a work of beauty - like 'Autumn Leaves' but more existential (I love the way he becomes the leaf at the end, a gorgeous moment of vertigo). 'Let Me Tell You About Her' is a maligned treat. But there's little to choose between songs 1-6 on my list, they're all flawless gems.

'Can You Be True?' - not lyrically very good, but what a melody.

'You Left Me in The Dark' - probably not as bad as #11, but it's a dud as an album-opener. Too plodding. My guess is that a lot of the critics who panned this record did so because they stopped listening at track #1.

I also agree that the tunes may work better apart than together; many of them share the same opening (soft piano chords) and that can create a slightly tiresome air, but it's a really fine CD, on the whole.

Too bad Elvis suffered so much on its account

I too love this record. There are only two songs that I have problems with: "Fallen" where I think he's doing a Frank Sinatra imitation (particularly when he goes all low on the "burnished in gold line) that doesn't quite work; and "When Green Eyes Turn Blue", where his voice limitations intrude and the melody goes astray a bit. On "When it Sings" again the voice strains and the 2nd and 4th verse fail to match the beauty of the other verses. Those are the only songs as to which I have reservations. The others are all perfect ballads, and three in particular ("Can You Be True"; "Still" and "Let me Tell You About Her" are the best pure love songs EC has written).

1. Can You Be True?
2. I'm In the Mood Again
3. Still
4. Let Me Tell You About Her

5. You Left Me In the Dark
6. You Turned to Me
7. When Did I Stop Dreaming
8. Someone Took the Words Away

9. When It Sings
10.Fallen
11. When Green Eyes Turn Blue

4. Let Me Tell You About Her

10. You Left Me In The Dark

Impatience and She's Pulling Out The Pin are 2 of my favourite 03/04 Elvis tracks. Both much better than bonus tracks.

Still would be slightly higher on my list, but pretty accurate stuff here Wardo.

I was just listening to this today. Perfect for rainy weather.

This is going to sound like a cop out, but I rank all of these songs equally. I think of this album as a whole, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to rank them. So it's an 11-way tie for me. That may not help your ranking, but it's an honest answer.

Not my favourite album, too many slow ballads. I know that is the intention, but not really my thing. I have impatience on my copy and agree with earlier posters that 1) It doesn't fit on the album but 2) It is a great song. I don't know what it is but I like quite a lot of 'bonus' or discarded tracks. Pulling Out the Pin is my favourite track from TDM, and I also love Just Another Mystery and Seconds of Pleasure.
I'll leave Impatience out but would have put it at number 2.

001. Still
002. When It Sings
003. You Turned To Me
004. Fallen
005. I'm in the Mood Again
006. Let Me Tell You About Her
007. Someone Took the Words Away
008. When Green Eyes Turn Blue
009. When Did I Stop Dreaming?
010. Can You Be True?
011. You Left Me In the Dark

I agree with Noise in that it's all pretty equal, but Still is a little too happy for me to put it any higher. (And I've been happily married for going on seven years now.)

It wasn't an easy ranking; they're all good to me.

Either i don't listen to this Album enough or the only songs I can think of are the first six. I know i don't really like The last two But those in between i'de have to listen to intently. It's an interesting record when reading the lyrics one can actually see EC falling out of love and falling back in again. I think that i'll only truly appreciate North when the same thing happens to me.

I find this album to be absolutely fantastic. I'm not able to find any weak tracks, which is very rare on any album by any artist. I had the chance to see him perform with the Brodsky's in '04 and it heightened my awareness of how truly terrific these songs are. Of course, I don't think Elvis has too many clunkers for albums (PTC is the only one I can't deal with, with the exception of a few songs).

Not one of my faves, obviously. The songs are much better live than this record indicates.
