Elvis Gets By With A Little Help From His Friends
May 22, 2006

Last year, VH1 Classic began filming a series of concerts in Atlantic City, under the "Decades Rock Live" title, where an eclectic mix of musicians would pay tribute to a classic artist. Some of the previous parings seemed a little unusual (Scott Weiland and Cyndi Lauper?) but the announcement of a tribute to Elvis Costello, featuring Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Fiona Apple and Death Cab For Cutie, sounded too good to miss.

The show kicked off with Death Cab teaming with Elvis for "Accidents Will Happen," and set the pace for the rest of the night, with a mix of each artist's songs performed either together or separately. There was also a two-song set that Elvis described as the "campfire" part of the show, where he and DCFC frontman Ben Gibbard sat at the front of the catwalk for an acoustic performance of "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes" and Death Cab's new single, "I Will Follow You Into The Dark."

A break in the show allowed for a changeover from Death Cab to Elvis' regular band, The Imposters. After a few songs, Fiona Apple was introduced and dueted with Costello on his "Shabby Doll." While he teamed with all the musicians on their own songs, the only time Elvis covered another artist's song alone was Apple's "I Know," which she watched from the edge of the stage. She was visibly thrilled, and told the crowd how excited she felt, after Elvis said, "That's a great song." Elvis then stepped aside to simply play guitar as he and the Imposters backed her on "Tymps (The Sick In The Head Song)" and a gripping performance of Elvis' haunting "I Want You," one of the highlights of the evening. Apple vocally held her own alongside Elvis, who you could tell was certainly a fan of hers.

After a few more songs with just Elvis and the Imposters, the third and final guest of the night was introduced to the screams of the young Green Day fans in the audience: Billie Joe Armstrong. As one of the older Green Day fans in the room, I would have preferred some more adventurous choices from the Green Day catalog for their performance together. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "Basket Case" were played with the full band. The pair of singers went back to the "campfire" setup for "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" and a few Costello tunes, including "Alison," which really did become a campfire sing-along. I would have love to hear those two trade verses on a song like Green Day's "Warning," though. Armstrong also joined the band for a handful of Elvis' more rockin' classics, such as "No Action," "Radio Radio" and "Pump It Up."

The entire lineup returned for the encore of the Motown classic "You Really Got A Hold On Me" and "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding." Since the concert was a TV taping, it made the pacing of the show a bit odd at times, but I'm sure it will come across great when it airs on VH1 Classic this summer.

From the jaded insider blog on the Billboard site:

Elvis, Billie, Death, Apple
We were fortunate enough to attend the taping of the next installment of VH1's "Decades Rock" series in Atlantic City at Trump's Taj Mahal, this time honoring the ever-honorable Elvis Costello. Fiona Apple, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and Death Cab For Cutie were all specially invited to play Elvis songs, for Elvis to play their songs and for everybody altogether to play Elvis songs.

The Love-fest was highlighted with a finale that involved covers of Smokey Robinson's "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?"

Like a shot of morphine when you don't really don't need morphine at all, we got to see and meet the stars after the show. All in all, after re-calling the tale to friends and workers in our mansion this week, everybody seemingly wants to know how they looked.

O.K. They're all very small. Fiona Apple and Billie Joe Armstrong are teensy tiny people with good skin. Billie's wife is super-gorgeous, even with the dreads. And Elvis still moved, sounded and behaved as detached at the show as he did 20 years ago.

Here's the set list:
"Accidents Will Happen" (w/ DCFC)
"New Year" (w/ DCFC)
"I Will Follow You" (acoustic w/ DCFC)
"Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes" (acoustic w/ DCFC)
"Crooked Teeth" (w/ DCFC)
"Kinder Murder" (w/ DCFC)
"When I Was Cruel" (w/ DCFC)
"Uncomplicated" (w/ the Imposters)
"Man Out of Time" (w/ the Imposters)
"Shabby Doll" (w/ Fiona)
"I Know" (w/ Fiona)
"Tymps" (w/ Fiona)
"I Want You" (w/ Fiona)
"Red Red Red" (w/ Fiona)
"The River in Reverse" (w/ the Imposters)
"Clubland" (w/ the Imposters)
"No Action" (w/ Billie Joe)
"Wake Me Up(When September Ends" (w/ Billie Joe)
"Allison" (acoustic w/ Billie Joe)
"Cheap Rewards" (acoustic w/ Billie Joe)
"Good Riddance" (acoustic w/ Billie Joe)
"Basket Case" (w/ Billie Joe and the Imposters)
"Radio Radio" (w/ Billie Joe and the Imposters)
"Pump it Up" (w/ Billie Joe and the Imposters)
Y"ou Really Got a Hold" (w/ the Imposters, Fiona, Billie Joe and DCFC)
"(What's So Funny 'bout) Peace, Love and Understanding" (w/ the Imposters, Fiona, Billie Joe and DCFC)

Taj Mahal Costello concert tops VH1's tribute series

By VINCENT JACKSON Staff Writer, (609) 272-7202

ATLANTIC CITY — No matter who receives tribute treatment in the remaining VH1 Classic presents Decades Rock Live! TV shows, the Elvis Costello episode taped Friday inside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort will rank as one of the best in the series.

Englishman Costello, 51, reigns as one of the greatest and most diverse rock songwriters of the last 30 years.

The concert inside the casino's Mark G. Etess Arena came off so well because the show's producers perfectly balanced artistic and commercial concerns. You can imagine younger versions of the concert's guest artists — Fiona Apple, the rock band Death Cab for Cutie and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day — sitting in their rooms and singing or playing along to Costello songs.

Armstrong's early songs align with the punk-influenced, late-1970s side of Costello's work. Apple covers the acid-tongued ballads aspect of his musical career, and Death Cab represents the indie-rock version of the alternative rock Costello put out in the mid-1980s.

None of the guests matched the status of Costello, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, but Apple and Armstrong definitely made their own mark on music during the past 20 years. Apple, Armstrong and Death Cab each brought their own set of fans into the arena, so the parents and children that attended the show each captured a glimpse into the other generation's music.

The concert opened with a rousing performance teaming Costello with the Death Cab band for one of his best songs, “Accidents Will Happen,â€

I really enjoyed Cheap Reward. I can't recall when I last heard Elvis sound so relaxed and unpretentious.

(Now that he's reminded of those demos, will we finally hear a Costello/Nieve arrangement of Wave A White Flag?)

Would have been better as a dedicated VH1 special if it was all EC and The Imposters. It's ok to have Fiona Apple doing a guest spot, but not with those amateurs and Billy Joe hogging the limelight.

i thought the show was suprisingly good on tv! as i had attended that night, and much enjoyed the show...was wondering if VH1 knew had to edit and present well. gotta admit, they made it smooth and did not screw up music at all by talkovers as tunes begun or ended. and they pretty much picked the correct songs for the 90 minute version. hope to one day see it get the FULL show dvd release!

Did anyone have the foresight to capture the "Cheap Reward" clip that was up on YouTube? Never got a chance to check it out earlier, and now it's gone...

So, I caught this by chance on tv after coming home last night (missing DCFC) and then watched it again this morning (again somehow missing DCFC). That Fiona Apple, oh Lordy. Her singing "I Want You" brought tears to my eyes--the perfect matchup of crazy singer to crazy song. If anyone has VH1 Classic and still hasn't seen this, it'll be playing...wow, now that I look at the website, it'll be playing a couple of times a day for the next couple of weeks. Maybe I will eventually get around to catching DCFC, even though I can't really get very excited about them. But I could listen to Fiona all day long.

Or you could just get the MP3:

(The visual portion of the video is pretty much worthless anyway, since the camera was so far from the stage.)

If you didn't catch Elvis Costello and friends over the weekend in the VH1 Classic program Decades Rock Live, you still have some opportunities over the next two weeks. Although I'm biased to everything that is Costello, to see him on stage with the likes of Fiona Apple, Death Cab for Cutie, and even Billie Joe Armstrong was amazing, as were the spine tingling performances. Not only did the guests help out on some classic Costello tunes, Costello helped them out on their own songs. The highlight of the program was Costello and Fiona onstage for a duet of 'Shabby Doll', from Costello's 1994 album Imperial Bedroom. Both singers' performances were intense and emotional. Lead singer and songwriter Ben Gibbard joined Costello for an acoustic version of 'I Will Follow You into the Dark', which is off Death Cab's most recent album Plans. Billie Joe Armstrong jammed with Costello on 'Pump It Up' and 'No Action', then sat down to help out on an acoustic version of 'Alison'. Don't miss these moving performances especially the spastic movements and stare downs from the beautiful Fiona Apple.

I caught it and thought it was fun. Some of the commercials were a riot. Would love to see one of the TRIR shows get this type of exposure though.

Hi everyone! New to the board!

I caught this on TV on Sunday and loved it! His version of Fiona Apple's "I Know" was unbelievable. I would love to have an audio recording of it!

I wasn't familiar with DCFC's music before. I actually thought that they were pretty good.

My preteen daughters were very pleased with Billie Joe's appearance. :D
