Rank Brutal Youth

Post by King Hoarse »

Finally I've decided to ignore the impossibility of the task of ranking what I think is EC's most evenly brilliant record (although sometimes marred by the elsewhere discussed halfbaked production). Really 1-7 would be first place, 8-12 second (I prefer all of those to anything off The Delivery Man, for example, and I like that record too) and then the last three close behind.

1. Sulky Girl
2. Favourite Hour
3. 13 Steps Lead Down
4. London's Brilliant Parade
5. Rocking Horse Road
6. Kinder Murder
7. You Tripped At Every Step
8. Clown Strike (minus points for Nick Lowe's lazy bass)
9. All The Rage (probably my favourite EC song to wail and play myself)
10. Pony Street
11. 20% Amnesia
12. Just About Glad
13. This Is Hell
14. My Science Fiction Twin
15. Still Too Soon To Know

Terrific EC record with more than half the record's songs having become favorites (1-8 to be exact). The others, with the exception of 15 which I do not like, I don't enjoy as much.

1. Just About Glad
2. Clown Strike
3. Rocking Horse Road
4. London's Brilliant Parade
5. My Science Fiction Twin
6. This Is Hell
7. All The Rage
8. 13 Steps Lead Down
9. Sulky Girl
10. You Tripped at Every Step
11. Still Too Soon To Know
12. Pony Street
13.Kinder Murder
14. Favourite Hour
15. 20% Amnesia

Hooray! The King is back!

1. All The Rage
2. Kinder Murder
3. You Tripped At Every Step
4. Rocking Horse Road
5. London's Brilliant Parade
6. Favourite Hour
7. 13 Steps Lead Down
8. Pony St.
9. Sulky Girl
10. Clown Strike
11. Still Too Soon To Know
12. Just About Glad
13. This Is Hell
14. 20% Amnesia
15. My Science Fiction Twin

So here's my problem with this album: it seems forced. I'm the only one I know who doesn't adore "Just About Glad", which sounds to me like he set out to write a clever song. Once the Rhino reissue happened and I got to hear some of the tracks before Mitchell Froom put his production stamp in I was able to appreciate them more. But not much. It's a good album, but I don't love it like I love others of his.

Beautiful cd, but again my views are way off regarding the ranks in which I'll give these songs:

1.Still too soon to know
2.Sulky Girl
3.You Tripped at every step
4.Rocking Horse Road
5.Favorite Hour
6.All the Rage
7.Clown Strike
8.20% Amnesia
9.Pony Street
10.Londons Brilliant Parade
11.My Sciene Fiction Twin
12.Thirteen Steps Lead Down
13.This Is Hell
14.Kinder Murder
15.Just about glad

How can anyone not love Still too soon to know??!!

What's so bad in the production?

For me, Mitchell Froom makes the bass sound like it's underwater, and makes the drums sound like they're being thrown down a flight of stairs. Not just on Elvis's albums, but other things he's done as well. Again, it's just a personal quirk of mine.

1 Thirteen Steps Lead Down
2 Kinder Murder
3 20% Amnesia
4 Sulky Girl
5 Clown Strike
6 My Sciene Fiction Twin
7 Londons Brilliant Parade
8 All the Rage
9 You Tripped at every step
10 Still too soon to know
11 Rocking Horse Road
12 Just about glad
13 Pony Street
14 This Is Hell
15 Favorite Hour

Obviously I go for the more rocking/punk stuff. I think Just About Glad is too easy a subject. Same with Pony Street.

Maybe it's just me, but I think the two songs recorded at Pathway Studios by just EC and Pete Thomas ("Kinder Murder" and "20% Amnesia"*) and the five with the full Attractions lineup ("13 Steps Lead Down," "This Is Hell," "Sulky Girl," "You Tripped At Every Step," "London's Brilliant Parade") sound fantastic.

It's the seven songs with Nick Lowe on bass ("Pony St," "Clown Strike," "Still Too Soon To Know," "My Science Fiction Twin," "Rocking Horse Road," "Just About Glad," "All The Rage") that disappoint. These are mostly well-written songs, but they don't come off as well as they should on the album. I doubt it's Nick's fault. It just seems like there's an all-around lack of genuine enthusiasm in these recordings.

I think Brutal Youth would have been a better album if at least a few of these songs had been recut with all the Attractions.

* Steve Nieve plays on "20% Amnesia," but his part was added after the original session.

I didn't know which songs were recorded by Lowe and which were recorded with the Attractions, but now that I do I must say that I think the ones recorded with Lowe are the better ones IMO.

You hear me say it before and you'll hear me say it agin. I simply don't care for the production as much as the song's meaning, as any serious EC fan should.

Amazing! 12 different songs from the album have so far got to Number One spot.
