My Flame Burns Blue - vinyl debut on BLUE VINYL , June 2016

Post by sweetest punch »

EC announced in the programme bio of his new opera that the North Sea Jazz Festival Show from 2004 will be released on Deutsche Grammophon in 2006.

What a great idea. I always thought that the songs with the Metropole Orchestra were far to good to stay unreleased. They are also to good to be released as a bonusdisc for Il Sogno (which was previously announced).

We know that the two shows from 2004-07-09 were recorded, but there might be a chance that the show from 2004-07-08 is also recorded. The two shows from 2004-07-09 were filmed, along with rehearsel sessions during the previous week.

This could be a great album.
It might contain these previously unrecorded tracks by EC: Upon A Veil Of Midnight Blue, Put Away Forbidden Playthings, My Flame Burns Blue (Blood Count), Speak Darkly My Angel, Punishing Kiss and Hora Decubitus (Hour Of Sleep).
There are also great versions of some of his lesser known songs possible for inclusion: Almost Ideal Eyes, Episode Of Blonde, The Favourite Hour, Can You Be True, Someone Took The Words Away,...
And these killertracks in new arrangements would make the album complete: Watching The Detectives, God Give Me Strength, Clubland, Almost Blue,...

Since two shows and some rehearsels were filmed, a DVD release is also possible (with surround sound)!!
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

I hope it's not a bonus disc on an Il Sogno reissue. I don't want to have another copy of that in the house!

It'd work for me cause I don't have the original :P. I wouldn't get it on its own though, Il Sogno that is.

I'm looking forward to this release.

It's going to include "Put Away Forbidden Playthings" and "Upon a Veil of Midnight Blue" for sure. That's all I know.

Excellent! I've been listening recently to a rough compilation I made from the various bootlegs of these shows and they really are great, particularly a heartbreaking version of Almost Blue, hope that makes the cut. The hilarious ironic ott version of Detectives is another highlight.

Is there anyone from our Danish posters who can translate exactly what is written in the programme bio of 'The Secret Songs' about the upcoming North Sea Jazz release? (And maybe also about the upcoming Il Sogno Tour?)

Hurray!

I'm glad that the 'Il Sogno' suite is the bonusdisc for the North Sea Jazz disc (and not the other way around).

Only three months to go.

Ironic. Awhile ago, the Metropole show was believed to be slated as the bonus disc to IL SOGNO...

With IL SOGNO SUITE on a bonus disc (presumably the suite isn't tacked onto the end of the live CD), this does suggest that his performance with The Metropole will be confined to a single disc. Hopefully nothing too good will get cut to fit it all on one CD.

Any idea how the "Il Sogno" Suite will differ from the Il Sogno released in 2004 ?

I hope they don't keep some tracks off the North Sea Jazz shows for a possible future expanded rerelease...

Were any of the songs just EC and Steve Nieve without the Metropole orchestra?

Here are the setlists from the 9th (so I assume SPunch's ref to Punishing Kiss is concerning an earlier show):

First set -
Instrumental (Barcelona)
Upon A Veil Of Midnight Blue
Clubland
Someone Took The Words Away
Still (w/ Lee Konitz)
Deep Dark Truthful Mirror
Put Away Forbidden Playthings
Dust
My Flame Burns Blue (Blood Count)
Hora Decubitus
Encore: God Give Me Strength

===

Second set -
Instrumental (Barcelona)
Favourite Hour
That's How you Got Killed Before
When Did I Stop Dreaming?
Can You Be True?
Almost Ideal Eyes
Speak Darkly, My Angel
When Green Eyes Turn Blue
Watching The Detectives
Episode Of Blonde
Encore: Almost Blue

It seems insane to leave out any of the Metropole Orchestra songs since they ARE offering two discs. I'm all for the tacking. Hi The Gentleman, btw.

No, all the songs were with the Metropole Orchestra.

That's right, Punishing Kiss was played the day before. I think that there is still a small chance that the show of the day before was also recorded: I think that the release of the North Sea Jazz performance (as a bonusdisc for Il Sogno) was planned before North Sea Jazz took place).

From the "Secret Arias" program:
In the beginning of 2006 Deutsche Grammophon will release a live-album from The North Sea Jazz Festival in 2004 which also contains a suite of highlights from Costello's Il Sogno played in concert with Metropole Orkest.

Damn-- where's Punishing Kiss on the tracklist? I also don't now expect Passionate Fight or Couldn't You Keep That To Yourself to show up soon in any form by EC. Which doesn't matter much because Ute Lemper's renditions would be hard to top but it still might be interesting.

These tracks were played during the North Sea Jazz Festival, but are not included on the new CD:

Punishing Kiss
Someone Took The Words Away (with solo from Lee Konitz)
Still
Deep Dark Truthful Mirror
When Did I Stop Dreaming
When Green Eyes Turn Blue

Let's hope that there will be also a DVD release from the North Sea Jazz festival, where some of these songs can find a home.

De Haas, who found that mastering "Blood Count" posed "a horrendous challenge," has chosen an introspective but equally heartfelt approach to Elvis Costello's poetic lyric, entitled "My Flame Burns Blue" and recorded here for the first time. Presented as a medley with "Day Dream," this intense performance concludes the album with a testement to de Haas's interpretive powers and the enduring majesty of Strayhorn's art.

As the last light glimmers
And evening hours dim
Maybe I'm too proud
To utter it out loud
Even though my flame burns blue
As the night's descending
Once again I start to
Tarry and pretend
My confidential friend
Will suddenly appear when you
All my might
Between velvet and dynamite
Blow out the doors
Let in the light
Falling dust in the beam
And small stiffled scream
Alibis and decoys
Were his eyes so turquoise?
Covered with a lash
They flatter and they flash
Even though my flame burns blue

If I seem a stranger
I feel far from danger
We temper and we toy
With passion over joy
Even though my flame burns blue

Even though the fire
That once was desire
Doesn't look for trouble
Or dare to flare
Look now
And I won't be there
I won't be there
I won't
I won't
I won't
I won't be there
Funny the way that I feel now
Can't keep my feet on the ground
Everything seems unreal now
When you're not around...

Coming attractions

Music
Costello goes live for 'My Flame'

His time is due. Previously unreleased compositions, overhauls of classics and an orchestral suite comprise My Flame Burns Blue, a live album that Elvis Costello hopes will explain some of his absences of the past dozen years.

Due Feb. 28 on Deutsche Grammophon, the concert was recorded at The Hague with the Metropole Orkest, a 52-piece jazz orchestra from The Netherlands. Among the songs and arrangements Costello has been honing over the past decade are Can You Be True?; a reinvented Clubland; Upon a Veil of Midnight Blue (earlier recorded by Charles Brown as I Wonder How She Knows); and Watching the Detectives, refashioned in the vein of a 1950s TV theme. Costello penned lyrics for Hora Decubitas, a Charles Mingus composition (per his widow's request) and for Billy Strayhorn's last work, Blood Count.

A bonus disc captures 45 minutes of Il Sogno, Costello's first full-length orchestral composition. In January, the suite will be the centerpiece of a global tour by Costello and Steve Nieve performing with local orchestras.

According to this, it may be released elsewhere in January.

While poking around Deutsche Grammophons site I came across this nice collection, which features the ABBA cover from the For The Stars.
