Question to all of those out there that hate Verionica. Do you hate even the middle eight part (or whatever you call that part) that starts out

"Do you suppose that bla blah blah... Veronica has gone to hide... blah blah blah... etc."

I always thought that was an exquisite piece of songwriting with really great harmonies?

I love Veronica! The part of the song that starts with "do you suppose. . ." is actually the chorus. The bridge (or "middle eight" as it's often refered to on the other side of the pond) is the part that starts with "On the Empress of India. . ." According to most accounts, Costello wrote the majority of the song before bringing it to his collaborative sessions with Paul McCartney. McCartney supposedly wrote the bridge and added a bit here and there to the verses and choruses.

So I've been out of town for a bit and just read the whole thread...can't help but add my opinion:

Elvis has written a lot - some, like Girls Talk, are obviously autobiographically referential (to a certain model I gather a majority of you prefer to not read a reference to) other songs, like Chelsea (where did he move shortly after?) might remind us that he is, in fact, allowed creative license as an artist.

Either way -- I hardly think this is a tidbit of the James-Brown/Ray-Charles-descrition-to-Stills type if one wishes to decide whether or not to look to Mr. Costello as a model of wholesome moral behavior ... it is, frankly, none of our business to judge in this situation.

Additionally, I would hazard to infer, many of the posts more clearly reflect our own personal baggage from previous relationship experiences - whether they be that of the dumped or the dumpee. (I know anything I might write would be far too translucent.)

I don't know Cait, Diana or Elvis and haven't a bloody clue what all transpired or the timeframes of any of it. That said, I hope all parties grow from the experience and find happiness.

I think, as a fan, that is as involved as one should be in their personal lives...

Bring on the firing squad!

I hate what he did. But he's a great songwriter. That's what i keep coming back for.

I MUST agree with NOIZE...if he's a prick, who really cares?? That's his life, not ours......his dickishness gives us a lot of cool and nasty lyrics for our own enjoyment.

When I left my ex. wife everyone bashed me and told me I was evil, including my own parents.....what no one realized is that the relationship was DEAD, for both of us, and I pulled the plug and gave it a euthenasial death. I was man enough to take the role as a bad guy to save us both and our son from further a continued mundane existence and mental anguish.

People cheat for a REASON....because they don't get their emotional or other needs met. Many women do not understand that men too have feelings, and need true emotional caring and romance and attention. If a woman leaves a man he deserved it because he was cold or had a little dick...right???? Don't play victim and don't be hypocritical......and as Noize says...if he's a prick so be it...but things are not always that simple.

As for y'all boys saying that we knew EC was a prick: lemme tell you something. There is a difference between being a prick and being a cheating bastard. Yes, I suppose it's common knowledge that Costello isn't exactly Suzy Sunshine--it's a man's prerogative to be a jerk every now and then. However, sneaking around on your woman of a decade and a half is not merely prickish--it's evil.

Hey--what do I know? It may not be true. But, if it is, listening to "North" will be a task.

And Coughlin's comments about Lady Diana are right on...the woman is bo-ring. Not even terribly attractive--I've always thought she looked like a man in drag.

Of course, I'm a fiery, catty woman. Hiss.

I'd like to say two things. I was quite drunk when I posted last night. (That's 1). And if Cope agrees with me, Mars must be closer than we thought.

Um, I actually feel a lot stronger about this Elvis cheating issue than I let on in that post. As much as I adore the man, there are limits. Liek when Pete Townshend was being accused of kiddie porn, if that had turned out to be true, I wouldn't have been able to go on as a fan of his. All those songs would have been permanently tainted for me.

I'm not suggesting that cheating on his wife would make me hate Elvis' music, but if he really treated Cait as shabbily as the rumor (and it's just a rumor as far as I'm concerned for now), then I would be very disappointed. It would be hard to be enthusiastic about a record that celebrates his new love under those circumstances.

It's like how I feel about John Lennon's tributes to Sean. They're nice and lovely, but knowing how he emotionally distanced himself from Julian makes them hard to listen to. Or a song like Imagine. As our man said, when a millionaire sings, "Imagine no possessions" while seated at his grand piano in his loft apartment in New York, it's hard to take the sentiment seriously.

And this is in the same ballpark for me, unsubstantiated as it may be.

Elvis Costello: Well, if that's the word for it. Maybe it's the grand idea for it. It's an arrangement of tones and rhythms and timbres and, of course, lyrics. They represent feelings and experiences that are - I'm thinking in the case for these songs - readily understandable. People in the past have said some of the words that have been written are hard to understand. People sometimes miss the point that that's deliberate, that you want to create a mystery in words that allow other people's imagination to flow. But in the case of these songs, they are written in a very plain language that's pretty easy to understand and, I think, speaking of experiences that people can recognise.

It's a general transition from the bewilderment to the ecstasy of love and that's surely something most people have experienced at one degree or another. So hopefully they will see themselves in these songs.
