The Essential Costello!

Post by Chrille »

Time for another list! Been a while. Since Hoarse stopped the "rank..." at Juliet Letters :P.

Anyway, with all these "Essential" thingies being released now (Essential Dylan, Springsteen, Jackson etc.). What would your Essential Costello look like? You'll have two cds to fill!

As with the others, the tracks would be placed chronologically.

I have chosen 40 tracks and tried to include songs from (almost) all his albums. Most choices are the obvious ones...

01. Alison
02. Watching The Detectives
03. (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
04. Pump It Up
05. Radio Radio
06. Accidents Will Happen
07. Oliver's Army
08. (What's So Funny About) Peace, Love And Understanding
09. I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down
10. Girl's Talk
11. New Amsterdam
12. New Lace Sleeves
13. Clubland
14. Good Year For The Roses
15. Almost Blue
16. Man Out Of Time
17. Every Day I Write The Book
18. Shipbuilding
19. Peace In Our Time
20. Don't Let me Be Misunderstood
21. Indoor Fireworks
22. I Want You
23. I Hope You're Happy Now
24. Veronica
25. Deep Dark Truthful Mirror
26. The Other Side Of Summer
27. So Like Candy
28. London's Brilliant Parade
29. The Birds Will Still Be Singing
30. All This Useless Beauty
31. The Other End Of The Telescope
32. I Still Have That Other Girl
33. God Give Me Strength
34. This House Is Empty Now
35. She
36. When I Was Cruel no. 2
37. 45
38. Still
39. Let Me Tell You About Her
40. Monkey To Man
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

That's what my list most likely would look like if I had chosen the tracks that I'd guess he's best known for and that people would like best upon first listen. However if I were to pick the tracks that I personally think are essential it would look very difference. I've given this two shots but failed both times. Too hard!

That strikes me as a pretty accurate overview list though I would drop New Lace Sleeves and Let Me Tell You About Her in favour of Wednesday Week, a relatively obscure but brilliant recording, and Only Flame In Town since it was a hit, though it would be great if a good live recording of the country version was used.

This is really really tough. My attempt is similar to Sweetest Punch's and follows the same basic philosophy of going mainly with the obvious choices. The problem is that once you'd made the obvious choices, there's hardly any room left for personal favorites!

DISC ONE [~79:30]:
1. Less Than Zero [3:18]
2. Alison [3:25]
3. Watching The Detectives [3:45]
4. (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea [3:10]
5. Pump It Up [3:18]
6. Radio, Radio [3:05]
7. (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding? [3:32]
8. Oliver's Army [2:59]
9. Accidents Will Happen [3:00]
10. I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down [2:06]
11. Riot Act [3:35]
12. Clubland [3:42]
13. New Lace Sleeves [3:47]
14. Good Year For The Roses [3:09]
15. Beyond Belief [2:34]
16. Man Out Of Time [5:26]
17. Almost Blue [2:50]
18. Pills And Soap [3:42]
19. Everyday I Write The Book [3:54]
20. Shipbuilding [4:54]
21. Inch By Inch [2:29]
22. Brilliant Mistake [3:45]
23. Sleep Of The Just [3:51]

DISC TWO [~79:45]:
1. I Want You [6:39]
2. Veronica [3:09]
3. Deep Dark Truthful Mirror [4:06]
4. The Other Side Of Summer [3:56]
5. So Like Candy [4:36]
6. Couldn't Call It Unexpected No. 4 [3:49]
7. This Sad Burlesque [2:47]
8. 13 Steps Lead Down [3:20]
9. All The Rage [3:52]
10. All This Useless Beauty [4:40]
11. That Day Is Done [5:11]
12. God Give Me Strength [6:10]
13. In The Darkest Place [4:19]
14. She [3:08]
15. For The Stars [2:41]
16. 45 [3:33]
17. When I Was Cruel (No. 1 - the Cruel Smile version) [4:16]
18. Still [2:27]
19. Monkey To Man [4:28]
20. The Scarlet Tide [2:27]

I couldn't find room for anything from Kojak Variety.

This is really hard. Let's say we increase it to 3 CDs to make it more interesting. ;)

Springsteen got 3, why shouldn't E.C? :P

I love making these lists. The good thing is, you can make different lists with E.C (for example a "Blue" list or a "Pump It Up" list)

Suggested price: Box Set: 49.99$ US
Individual CD'S: 14.99$ US
Blockbuster Price: 1,999 Pounds

Disc One (The "I want to bite the hand that feeds me album--should have a picture of the classical elvis pose--1977-1980:

1.Alison
2.Watching the Detectives
3.Blame it On Cain
4.Less THan Zero
5.This Year's Girl
6.Pump it Up
7.Chelsea
8.Oliver's Army
9.Wednesday Week
10.Accidents Will Happen
11.Green Shirt
12.I Can't Stand...
13.Oppurtunity
14.High Fidelity
15.Clubland
16.Shot with...
17.From A Whisper...
18.Watch Your Step
19. Sweet Dreams
20.Good Year For the Roses

Disc Two (The "No More Mr.Punk guy"--the king of America picture would be nice here--1981-1987):

1.Almost Blue
2.Beyond Beleif
3.Imperial Bedroom
4.Let Them All Talk
5.The Greatest Thing
6.PIlls and Soap
7.Shipbuilding
8.THe Only Flame In Town
9.I Wanna Be Loved
10.Brilliant Mistake
11.Suit Of Lights
12.I'll Wear It Proudly
13.Uncomplicated
14.Tokyo Storm Warning
15.I Want You
16.Blue Chair
17.Man Out Of Time (Alt Version)
18.Everyday I Write the Book (Live Version)
19.Leave My Kitten Alone (BAC Take)
20.Seven Day Weekend

Disc Three (The "Best Grandaddy in the world" disc--should not have a picture from 1990-the end of the beard years--1989-2005):

1.Veronica
2.This Town...
3.The Other Side...
4.How to be Dumb
5.After the Fall
6.Georgie and Her Rival
7.Jackson MOnk and Rowe
8.Pony St.
9.Clown Strike
10.13 steps...
11.Still too soon to know
12.20% amnesia
13.Please Stay
14.All this useless beauty
15.complicated shadows
16.Painted From Memory
17.This House Is Empty now
18.45
19.Alibi
20.WIWC no.2
21.You Turned To Me
22.Fallen
23.Still
24.Monkey To Man
25.Scarlet Tide

...I guess I rushed through the 90's a bit eh? It's hard to do this. I would rather go out and buy an artist's best cds rather than a compilation. oh and the Box set should also include a DVD with bonus footage and interviews and whatnot. In fact, I'm looking forward to an Elvis Costello "Box Set"!!!

So far, I'd buy stranger's edition. Only with this cover instead (and a less crummy title-cut-&-paste job)

I like both! Good job guys! In fact, you're not that far away from making the cd. It shouldn't be that hard (than all we gotta do is go to Demon records and try to sell the idea, or donate, if we really want to get things going...on second thought, it might not even sell that much :( )

This is too high level, so advanced I think I'll never be.

I can only say my favourite song is "So Like Candy".
