VIPs pack Butler's birthday guest list

For a small liberal arts school that struggles for national notice, Butler University has lined up a 150th birthday party fit for the stars.
The university's sesquicentennial year will include visits from two former presidents, a documentary about Hinkle Fieldhouse on ESPN Classic, a performance by singer Elvis Costello and campus debates involving award-winning authors, journalists and politicians.
In the true spirit of civil discourse, conservative columnist George Will and former Democratic Sen. Bill Bradley of New Jersey will face off Oct. 13 at Clowes Memorial Hall.
A debate between Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Anna Quindlen and David Halberstam is on tap for Oct. 14, followed by a performance by singer Ben Folds. Both debates are free.
Also in the lineup are former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, who will make separate appearances on Nov. 6 and March 2, respectively. The speeches are free.
Private donors will foot the bill for all special guests except the musical acts. Tickets for those will go on sale next month.
The big-name billing falls in line with the university's mission to boost national name recognition, President Bobby Fong said Monday.
"We're trying to call attention to ourselves this year," said Fong, who took the reins at the 2,300-student Indianapolis campus four years ago. "Butler is not as well-known as it needs to be."
Butler's sesquicentennial, however, will kick off with a decidedly hometown feel Aug. 26, with a carnival, free food and a birthday cake big enough to feed 1,500 people. University officials said the party will start at 5 p.m. and end with fireworks at dusk.

Steven Libman is optimistic in his vision for Carmel’s $80 million performing arts center.
The recently hired executive director believes he’ll have no trouble raising money for a $3 million operating budget. He plans to pack the calendar with a mix of performances by local groups and touring acts. And he feels confident that the names on the marquee will be big—the likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Tony Bennett and Diana Krall. [...]
Libman has tentative plans to book half the year with touring acts. He’s envisioning a broad range of artistic styles, including classical, jazz and dance. He doesn’t hesitate to throw around noteworthy names. In the interview, he mentioned the possibility of working with or booking the London Symphony Orchestra, Juliard String Quartet, Tokyo String Quartet, and Elvis Costello.
