Costello Unplugged

Post by so lacklustre »

Whilst sorting through some old videos, I discovered a recording of EC & The Rude 5's 1991 MTV unplugged session that I'd forgotton about!

Fucking excellent!

Never seen that SoL, how many songs are included? I've wondered if there were more than those included on the MLAR bonus disc... and, if so, whether they were available. Did you just tape it off of the TV?

Is that the one where Elvis says, "After this, it'll be MTV plugged back in again"?

Some of the tracks are on the MLAR bonux disc. I used to have that show on tape, but I can't find it anymore. I remember versions of these songs:

Other Side of Summer (in 3/4, I think)
Hurry Down Doomsday
Bama Lama Bama Loo
Deep Dark Truthful Mirror
So Like Candy (I think)

I know there were others, but I don't remember which.

Yeah, I taped it off the tv, and yes it is the one where he says "After this, it'll be MTV plugged back in again"? before launching into Bama Lama Bama Loo.

Noise had it pretty much right, apart from there was a kind of medley that included All Grown Up, So Like Candy and I think I Want You (watched it a couple of nights ago when under the influence). Costello was fully bearded and had pony tail. On the same tape was a Joe Jackson concert recorded in Sydney recorded at about the same time (1991).

I have also rediscovered a video (pre recorded) of The Man, The Best of EC from 1985. The magnificent track list is as follows:

Green Shirt
Pump It Up
Olivers Army
I Wanna Be Loved
High Fidelity
Clubland
Peace L &U
New Lace Sleeves
I Can't SU(FFD)
Radio Radio
New Amsterdam
The Only Flame In Town
(IDWTGT) Chelsea
Possession
Sweet Dreams
Let Them All Talk
Accidents Will Happen
You Little Fool
Love For Tender
Good Year For The Roses
Everyday I Write The Book
Watching The Detectives

Odd coincidence, I dug out my EC-The Man video last weekend while I was trying to find my Derek&Clive stuff. It's great. I remember buying it in 1989 when I became an EC fan and before I had the records and used it as a road map for buying each album. What makes the compilation even better is that I taped promos for "...This Town..", "The Other Side of Summer" and "Sulky Girl" (2 versions!) at the end of the tape.

All in all EC has around 30 videos, he deserves a decent DVD.

The full track listing is also there on the above link, for anyone else who's interested. 9 songs (without including I Want You added to So Like Candy). Thanks Martin.
