Voodoo Child

' Since storming the charts and picking up an ARIA award for Best Dance single in 2003 with 'One Of My Kind', renowned Oz dance outfit Rogue Traders (DJs James Ash and Steve Davis) have sprung back onto the scene with a new sound, attitude and member in tow - the multi-talented Natalie Bassingthwaighte (Neighbours, Grease).

Revamped and rearing to go, Rogue Traders have unleashed their brilliant new single 'Voodoo Child' - a high-voltage electro-clash pop anthem based around the infectious Hammond organ riff from Elvis Costello's 'Pump It Up', that grabs you by the throat then lifts you from the floor!
'Voodoo Child' leads the way from the eclectic house-tinged beats of Rogue Trader's last album, 'We Know What You're Up To', to the new musical territory mapped out on their forthcoming set: a mix of electronic, pop and rock, infused with punk energy in spades.

The 12" mix of 'Voodoo Child' has been at #3 on the club chart for the last three weeks and is still climbing.

More than just a great single, 'Voodoo Child' heralds the start of a new era for Rogue Traders. Expect to hear a lot more of these guys over the coming months...and turn this baby up nice'n'loud! '

Rogue Traders performed it last week at our rugby league grand final, so to an audience of millions here and overseas. The single is still in the top 15 or so nationally.

According to this, it peaked at #4 and has sold over 70,000 copies. A nice earner for Dec, it'll help pay the rent. Btw, is the current #1, SHINE by Shannon Noll, as lame as its write-up implys?

Martin, it doesn't pack the dramatic punch of his previous singles What About Me and Learn To Fly. To my ears it doesn't sound very distinctively Noll or particularly strong at first, but he's got the pull to have it heard repeatedly so I can't blame him for a different approach.

You can listen to it here.

Voodoo Child (RCA)

Nothing to do with Jimi Hendrix or BBC1's exposé on cowboy builders, this is in fact an audacious pop ploy on behalf of some Australians to write one of those unfathomable "songs of the summer". And they've pretty much succeeded, by splicing Elvis Costello's Pump It Up to a vocal that goes "Ooh yeah baby". Surely it can't be a coincidence that the singer goes out with Stefan Dennis from Neighbours, whose own distended vocal technique gave us the unforgettable Don't It Make You Feel Good? I think not.

Will Elvis, er, the Rogue Traders crash into the Top 10? Check this link this Sunday evening to see if he does !

Heard over the breakfast table in the Costello-Krall lodgings this morning:

ELVIS: Oh, what's that sound I hear wafting across the Atlantic, Diana? it sounds like the chiming laughter of pixies, the faery folk of the British Isles.

DIANA: Nah it's just the sound of cash registers ringing up your royalties in old Blighty, mate. I hear it all the time. Ka-ching!

ELVIS: (musing) Royalties? Hmm, well, well, well. Yes I remember those. I used to get them in the 70s.

I reckon Elvis's new record company should re-release Pump It Up so that "the kids" can realise where the riff came from and discover the great man!

Doubt if it'll happen, though.

D'you reckon Elvis actually knows about this sample? And I wonder who ACTUALLY wrote the riff - Elvis or Steve?

You mean who nicked the riff.....

Pump It Up

has similarities to Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues', which is itself a re-write of Chuck Berry's 'Too Much Monkey Business'. A version of 'Pump It Up' performed with the Confederates, 1987-12-04 at Shellharbour Worker's Club, Wollongong, Australia included a verse from each of the above derivatives.

I dunno about that.

The proto-rap of the vocal melody certainly resembles Subterranean HSB, but the keyboard and guitar riff - that descending, fascistic DANG DANG DANGADANG from B to A through Bflat - is actually quite original. You certainly won't hear it on the Dylan or Chuck Berry songs.

Yup - Pump It Up is a classic single of the New Wave era. I really think they should re-release it off the back of this dance hit, but I doubt it'll happen.
