The Quo do Elvis

Post by martinfoyle »

Status Quo have done a version of Pump It Up for inclusion on their next
album, imaginatively called Riffs, due in November. Here's how Graham
Parker reacted when he was so honoured. Will Elvis be so gracious?

-Graham,

I just saw that Quo has recorded 'Crawling from the wreckage' on
their 'Famous in the last century'. Excellent news as they always sell + 1M
CDs........ Have you heard it ? - its not as good as Rockpile used to do
it !

TO BORIS IN GOTHENBURG:

Yes, I was actually in Sweden on tour with The Missiles when I heard this
remarkable piece of news. I bought a copy right away. Ah, Quo — the band
every musician loves to hate; the quintessential English pub jukebox
favourites whose self-defining singles of "square boogie" everyone —
including those snobby musicians — will be tapping their feet and singing
along with after a couple of pints of lager and lime. 'Tis a great pity
they are unknown in the Americas, and, I fear, after their album hit only
19 in the British charts then plunged unceremoniously out, they're not
doing too well on that side of the pond, either. Still, to be covered by
Quo...I was pleasantly stunned.

Assuming EC's given permission (which I'm sure he has) no doubt he'll be using the royalties to pay for the wedding (whenever it happens)...

It could be much worse! I have no idea why they would, but Quo could have decided to cover "Almost Blue," "You'll Never Be a Man" or "All This Useless Beauty."

But PIU has more than 3 chords (just about)!

Does the final say really come down to Elvis? It's just that I can't imagine him giving the go-ahead for the band to record the song. Ho-hum, another Costello oddity I suppose.

Come on all you musicians amongst us - what's the deal?

I would assume EC has to give permission because he was moaning that Prince wouldn't give HIM permission to release Pop Life.

One can only presume that EC okayed it. Like GP, he probably regards it as a sort of compliment that a bunch of oul fellas like Rossi and Parfitt saw fit to have ago at one of his tunes. He presumably okayed the Duran Duran cover of WTD, and that is hilariously awful.
