So today on my lunch I decided to venture to the local HMV and try to find a cheap CD to buy to reward myself for going braindead at work.

It looked hopeless, and I exited the store, only to return and try again. I managed to find a section with some imports, and it was the Neil Young reissues that caught my eye first. I scrolled down however and saw to my delight, one copy of Trust, one copy of Punch The Clock, and one copy of Get Happy!! At first I snagged all three, despite the $39.99 CDN ($28 USD, 18 GBP), but decided I could be patient until September. Except for Get Happy!!, which I am THOROUGHLY enjoying.

Yes, that was me dancing on the Toronto subway train on my way home from work.

$28 for ONE CD? The Rhino reissues are selling for $19.00 at the overpriced Virgin Megastore in Hollywood.

It's probably worse than that since, as I understand it, Canadians make in Canadians dollars about what Americans make in American dollars -- which is why Canada is sort of like a big one-third off sale to Americans! (Though this obviously doesn't apply to CD, nor to DVDs -- believe me, I looked!). Even so, I didn't think it was that bad.

Oh, well, I still love Canada.

It's $28 for an imported 2CD set that won't be available in North America until September. The price will drop by at least $10 when the discs are readily available in September.

Well, wouldn't want to get BlueChair any angrier, so I won't ask him about those tricky pronounciations of "about" or the excessive use of the expression "eh?"

I can kinda sympathise with BlueChair. I hadn`t intended getting the latest re-issues for a while , even though they are readily available at competitive prices here in Dublin. I just know they`ll be much cheaper in a few months - I got MAIT for 10 euro in a sale a few months ago.

Then a druggie shook a syringe in my face while robbing my shop and I decided - Fuck this , and treated myself to the lot. For all kinds of reasons - great sound , stimulating notes etc - they have helped me feel much , much better.

At least he is'nt saying things like For talk's sake . It used to always crack me up when I heard Blue Chair's great fellow countrymen in the beautiful Maritimes use that phrase instead of For f**k's sake.

Did anyone see that thing 'Bowling for Columbine' by Michael Moore... he showed that people in Canada don't lock their doors, even those people that live in the suburbs.

Is this true, or has he twisted the truth?

In Toronto you will find very few people that don't lock their doors. We actually do have quite a bit of crime. In smaller towns I'm sure it's a different story.

sometimes, you just gotta spend the dough. lousy, lousy thing to force you into it, but, hey you've got the reissues and i still don't.

okay, $28 PER SET. got it. when i was still independently wealthy i might have succumbed to temptation. but, money's gone (amazing what a home down payment does to the bank account) and i'm waiting.

Re: Crime/relative lack thereof in Canada, I'm no expert, but I had an interesting comparative travel experience a few years back.

One year, I took my vacation in New Orleans, a place I love but where every cab driver, hotel employee, etc. very sweetly warned me about crime and what streets to avoid, etc. Even though I was from L.A., they warned as if I was from Nebraska. (N.O. was the U.S. murder capital during the mid-nineties, I think. Not long before I was there, there had even been a particularly brutal multiple homicide in a restaurant, where the perpatrator turned out to be an on-duty policewoman!)

A year or so later, I went to Montreal/Quebec City. There, the cab drivers would ask me where I was from, I'd say L.A. and they'd start bragging about how incredibly safe Montreal was, especially in comparison to my strife ridden home town!

I found it sort of amusing, crime aside because there are a few simlitaries between Quebec and Louisiana (the Acadian connection, I guess).

Another interesting Canada fact (well, if you're a gambler, anyway). Casinos there have every just about ever game we have in the Vegas type casinos -- except craps. Apparently, dice games are illegal there. (I have no idea why, but I can't help thinking it must have sprung from some incident where Jean Lafitte killed someone over a dice game or something.)
