Your spouse's favourite EC album

Post by Jackson Monk »

I've noted that a number of people struggle to convince their partners of Elvis's brilliance. If they have to, what Elvis album will your wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend/pet listen to with the least reluctance.

Mrs Doofster likes PTC, but her favourite EC album by some way is 'King of America' - esp American without Tears, Sleep of the Just and Brilliant Mistake.

Can your partner tolerate any Elvis or do they just turn the volume contols down? :x

My Aim Is True -

Her favorite song is Less Than Zero and she's a fan of Alison, Red Shoes and Detectives (we're American and Detectives, like Radio Radio on the next one will forever be part of the album for me).

Elvis and my wife

Post by Mikeh »

ELvis is banned from our house. I have to play him in the car or on headphones. My wife DID try, she saw him on the Brutal Youth tour ("too loud") with the Brodskys and with Steve. However, some time I catch her singing something All this Useless Beauty, or Alison. She does like the songs but not his voice. (A bit like my feelings for Dylan!) So I suppose her favourite album would be the Lost Dogs tribute album!!

Probably any one that's played, now that I'm outta the house!

I must say to his credit my sometimes downright tone-deaf ex always preferred either IB or KOA.

My Aim Is True is the one she bought before she met me, but she always says she likes his singing on Imperial Bedroom when I put that on. From KoA on she thinks he sounds "as if he needs to go to the lavatory". I sorta see what she means. (Her dad thinks Elvis and Frank Black are the two best singers ever, though.)

My poor long suffering partner has no choice as I usually always play my records on my computer while i'm working or surfing in the evenings, and he can't reach my volume button without killing me first!!

My ex husband was a huge Elvis fan from the first album he released so no conflict there. But my current partner is gradually coming round to liking a lot of his stuff. Even if he's not too keen on a particular album admires his talent and sheer poetry with words, and has actually said Elvis is one of the most talented songwriters of our time! I think he likes most tracks on Imperial Bedroom.

So small victory for Gilli there in converting a sinning 'non Elvis' fan!! :D

My wife's favourite albums are The Juliet Letters and North.
She likes lots of EC songs, though admittedly she's more into the ballad stuff and not the "angry young man" (with a few notable exceptions like "...Red Shoes", "Oliver's Army", "High Fidelity", "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down" and "New Amsterdam" - she loves Elvis with tulips  ).

11 years ago I dragged her to London to see Elvis & the Attractions at the Albert Hall. Though the show's poor sound spoiled the whole experience, she was more than happy (actually giggled like a teenager :D ) to see Elvis at arm's distance after the concert and she's quite positive it was her that Elvis said "goodnight" to right before getting into his car.

My wife is vaguely approving rather than actively interested (she is so not a music collector), but she did enjoy mobile phone excerpts of some ballads from Hammersmith this month: Good Year For The Roses (which she adores), Shipbuilding, I Want You. We do, however, have not 'our tune', but 'our LP', which is Mighty Like A Rose, which was on heavy rotation in the car in Spain at the time, and will forever remind me of being with her in Hispanic country roads, marvelling at and singing along to After The Fall and So Like Candy. One of the reasons this LP is very special to me. My son, 12 and currently enthusing about Green Day, Killers, Ramones and especially Led Zep, is a huge fan of Indoor Fireworks!

Love the disclaimer! You knew I'd be frothing at the mouth without it. Don't worry, BWAP, I know you know what the real tracklisting was.

Almost Blue

Post by charliestumpy »

'Almost Blue' - for 'A Good Year For The Roses' - on vinyl, or several CDs. For many years this spouse-lady's been very good, and has accompanied me to see Mr Costello in Bristol. Unfortunately we missed 'Mystery Train' here on 12-02-2005, and still cannot find recording of that, or 'Mystery Train' repeat performance at Manchester. - .mp3 would be very very welcome to our working week.

Strongly suspect that majority of 'spouses' (mostly female...) like 'Notting Hill' soundtrack with 'She' ....

My beloved always quite liked EC before we met but since she first saw him in concert (2002 WIWC) her estimation has risen greatly. Therefore she loves WIWC and also likes GH a lot.

Well, I don't know that this will come as a surprise to anyone, but I'm pretty sure Spooky's favorite EC album is KOA.

My wife likes KOA but doesn't like TDM (I hope the Borgata show changes that). She also takes PFM for long car when she knows Elvis is required listening.

Like most casual fans, Pump it Up, Red Shoes, Accidents, Detectives, Alison,... the usual staples. When I put together a listening disc for vacation, those must be on it.

My wife spent many years working at Capitol Records where they would play music all day every day. This has made her avoid music to a large extent. Of course the Beatles and Elvis will almost drive her insane due to the over playing of their biggest artists at the time. When Blue Christmas comes on I can see her cringe.

As far as EC she has no interest al all.

I must say this makes me feel very lonesome and wonder if I'll ever have warm feelings when I hear the word 'spouse' again. Not that I hate my ex, I don't, but it must be nice to be happy in marriage.

Sorry to be a moaner.

are we married to the same person, OS? :P

My darling codger of a husband of 22 years (I think I must be the board record holder here - and I was a child bride, mind you) and I agree to disagree on Elvis. He loves John Prine, so that was enough to make me fall for him. He does willingly accompany me to the shows, but will usually make me want to kick him at least once during the evening. In spite of my fears, he did NOT hold a lighter up and holler FREE BIRD at the last show with the Brodskys.

No, but he did go to the lobby for several very tall beers during the show. And he did turn around to the people near us and start spreading the rumor that he thought John Prine was in the building.

no, no. he went to the restroom once and got a beer whilst doing so. that's within reason, and no spousal errors were committed, no gifts or sackcloth and ashes apologies necessary.

Oh, sorry. I just remember him being a little antsy during the show.

But he was pretty good about going with us to the alley after the show to chase Elvis down. :)

By far his fave is My Aim Is True with Alison being his all time fave track. He also likes IB a lot, but I have to say, he's at my mercy and pretty much listens to whatever I put on. (He's a big Ramones fan.)

I can pretty much ditto all of the above there, Mood Swung. We actually started off our relationship with a mutual love of EC.....but after IB, he pretty much started to lose interest. He hung around during PTC, but since then it's pretty much been all me.
Elvis saved me though this time by playing a show in Atlantic City. Hubby loves the casinos, so it's the absolute perfect compromise to go to another show!

(It's a funny thing....as he's gotten older, he's looking very much like EC does now, right down to the specs and the the space between his front teeth. Can't sing to save his life though! It's become a little joke in our family. Walking around in New York last year for the shows at Lincoln Center, he actually got a few double takes. I keep wanting to post his pic....... I'll add it to my 'to do' list.)
I'm not angry anymore....
