I´m About To Hear 'When I Was Cruel' For The Very First Time

Post by Bob And Charlotte »

It´s gonna be my 5th Costello record.
I already listen to 'My Aim Is True', 'Imperial Bedroom', 'Painted From Memory' and 'North'. What can i expect?

*though i know that probably its not gonna be as marvelous as 'My Aim Is True' or 'Imperial Bedroom'

A rowdy rhythm record. It's really good, especially 15 Petals and Episode of Blonde. But I like the whole thing.

I´ve heard that is a much rocker record than 'North' and 'Painted From Mermory'... it´s more or less like 'This Year´s Model' and 'Blood & Chocolate' (but since that i never listen both... i doesn´t help much)

Hope you enjoy it. I remember not liking Episode Of Blonde until I heard and saw it live. The energy Elvis gives it on stage is electrifying.

Well, it's unlike any of the ones you've heard so far. I think you'll really like it.

My fav is "My Little Blue Window"! I envy that you get to experience all of the albums for the first time. I can't go back to that innocence, but from what I remember it was an awesome experience! Especially Imperial Bedroom and KOA and B&C!! Oh, Spike and Get Happy! are great too! Oh, heck I just love them all! Get Taking Liberties or "Ten Bloody Marys..." too!

Is it right to judge an album based on the first listen?

Of course no. I remember (just can´t understand how) not liking The Stone Roses debut or Music From Big Pink or even 'Love and Theft' on the first listening... Today i love all those records!

Give a particular listen to this lyric:

"Into the street where petty crime-coats shadow panic drunkards,
Half out of the taxi cab the barker seized my elbow
He thought I was another lonely, likely pilgrim looking for St.Telmo"

Does it sound like he is paying tribute to another Bob Dylan here? It does to me.

The problem with me Mr. Average is that every song that i like - i said EVERY SONG THAT I LIKE - i find some connection with Bob Dylan.
It seems to me that before anyone did anything, Dylan did everything :D :D :D

St Telmo...Erasmus?

Is this in reference to Erasmus, the saint.....whom not much is known about, (apart from the thuderstorm thing) or am I missing something?

There was a Saint Erasmus? We learned about an Erasmus in my Poetry & Prose class this year.. a humanist scholar:

Erasmus (1469? - 1536)

One of the greatest scholar of all-times, he was called Prince of the Humanists and lived at the time of the Renaissance, a period of profound changes, characterized by the revision of most prevailing concepts and a return to classical sources.
The unparalleled popularity he had acquired made him, in his thirties, an eagerly sought after guest of kings and emperors, popes and cardinals, archbishops and bishops, lords and towns councilors, university heads, in other words, people who moved in the most distinguished circles of the day.

His best known work is the Praise of folly that he wrote on his way back from Italy, a pamphlet mainly directed against the behavior of ruling classes and church dignitaries while exposing the irony of mankind's vanities.
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

Yeah, not the same Erasmus Blue...(there was a greek Erasmus as well wasn't there??) Saints have loads of different names, latinised versions and all that...I just had a look in my book, and it says...

St Telmo - Erasmus, Elmo. c300....stuff about his life...then it says 'patron saint of navigators...

makes sense now! ''looking for St Telmo''

Also the patron saint of colic and similar diseases! Nice! His feast day is June 2nd...so that can be Episode of Blonde day!!

Thanks Laughing Crow. That fills in one of the 'blanks' I had on this song. It works. Thanks.

I thought I read somewhere that "St. Telmo" was a pub somewhere too...

I personally can't get enough of When I Was Cruel. I just love all the different musical textures in it. My favorite, though I don't have all that many CD's (yet). Just got Imperial Bedroom, and so far....well....OK, but WIWC is better, I think....
