EC and racehorses

Post by WhipsnSpurs »

The "Elvis when you least expect it" thread made me think of this.

As you can probably guess from my "handle", I'm into horses. I have noticed two 3-year-olds listed this year that were of interest. One is "Forty Five" and the other is "Spooky Girlfriend". I don't think either has started, and Spooky Girlfriend's work times are terrible - don't think she could outrun a plow horse!

Just thought it was kind of interesting - BUT - didn't "When I Was Cruel" come out in 2002? These horses would be foals of 2001.

Racehorses aren't generally named until they are yearlings.

WhipsnSpurs, thought you might like to know that according to a radio interview that Elvis did last year, he used to have shared ownership in a racehorse called Stonehenge. He described it in a wonderfully untechnical way as a jumping horse. I gather that it was not very successful as he described it as jumping like Stonehenge.

I'm guessing it was a steeplechaser (if he called it a jumping horse, and it was a race horse). That is interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Well, I'm a bettin' man on occasion, but it's my dad who's the horseplayer in the family. However, on those rare occasions when I do play the ponies, my betting philosophy would pretty much force a bet on either horse. If they're longshots, all the better, as I never bet more than $5 on a horse anyway.

As to my more usual proclivities, well, EC has never written a song called "21" or "Yo Eleven."

Perhaps some horsekeepers(or horsenamers?) are Elvis fanatics.

I think these 2 horses are obviously EC inspired. Too bad they are not runners. Forty-Five is in a very good barn to (Nick Zito's, I believe).

"Spooky Girlfriend" is most likely directly EC inspired, I guess, but "45"...well, could be the age of owner or his/her year of birth, his favorite kind of gun, etc. -- but if both horses are owned by the same person/people, you're undoubtedly right. That would be too much of a coincidence.

There needs to be a horse named "5ive Gears In Reverse"

But only Elvis fans would bet on it!

King Horse, would be better.

Maybe Spooky Girlfriend was named by an admirer of our own very lovely board member ? :D

The horse should be called ...this town..., if only because there aren't enough horses with elipses in their names.

Well, Five Gears in Reverse (just made the 18 character limit), King Horse and This Town (thought I think elipsis are not legal!) are all available, if you know anyone that needs a horse named! :)

My sisters and I, as children, used to have fun picking names for fictional racehorses (go ahead--mock freely), but I didn't know there were rules!

Oh yeah there are rules. You have to run names through the Jockey Club before they become "official". Some basics -- no more than 18 characters, no naming after famous people without authorization from the person or estate, no naming after famous horses, and no lewd or suggestive names.

Though Mike Pegram seems to get some past the JC - Isitingood was the worst I've seen!
