Tramp The DD v Invasion H P v All The Rage v You Bowed Down

Post by bambooneedle »

It's song poll time again. I did have a common thread in terms of them all being somewhat accusative songs... but then I changed one. They still are I suppose though (a lot of EC songs are). Again, I won't vote or comment on them till later, so it's all yours... This time there'll also be half a point awarded to songs placed 2nd -- 'cos I like it when people rank them (but don't forget to click on the poll for your first choice).

1. You Bowed Down
2. Tramp the Dirt Down
3. Invasion Hit Parade
4. All the Rage

cause i loves dat song. the byrds thing whacks me. go nuts at the opening strain. tramp right behind due to the straight up clarity of viciousness.
I'm not concerned about the very poor.

Don't be confused by the songs appearing twice on the poll -- they didn't show so I added them again and now they can't be removed (I think). To save further confusion you might like to click on the first of each option...
(why'd I have to f#ck up on my first thread?)

Tramp the Dirt Down is one of the most beautifully written songs I've ever heard. The lyrics are powerful and moving, and I think it could apply to other world leaders besides Thatcher.

1. All The Rage!! Mean, mean, mean things you'd like to say to people , but don't, because that wouldn't be nice. "You murder time and truth, love, laughter and belief". Brilliant.
2. You Bowed Down--love the Byrds thing, too.
3. Tramp The Dirt Down--only just barely less than YBD.
4. Invasion Hit Parade--just don't care for it much. Overwrought.
It's a radiation vibe I'm groovin' on

a tough one, but I've got to go with All THe Rage...I wish I would've known this song when I was going out with that PSYCHO girl Mandy...(better yet, when I was breaking up with her.)

Yay, mine's winning!

"So don't try to touch my heart, it's darker than you think,
And don't try to read my mind, because it's full of disappearing ink."

Yeah, that song is full of killer kiss-off lines. It gets my vote.

I still don't really know what 'You Bowed Down' is saying. Someone said it was about Derek Hatton and/or Paul McCartney. I can see the supposed Hatton references but not so much the McCartney ones. Any ideas?

It's a great song still, so..

1. All The Rage

All The Rage - Easily the best of the lot (IMHO)

Tramp The Dirt Down - I agree that it's beautiful and all, but a bit too overtly political. A song that I think dates itself as time passes.

You Bowed Down - I'd call it filler.

Invasion Hit Parade. I agree, waaay overwrought. And one of the few EC compositions which I can't remember the entire melody to.

Bunny... I mean Plaything, I once said that it had 'crossed my mind' that it could have been inspired by disgust at his buddy Sir Paul becoming knighted, but would never speculate that it in fact was. Others said that it appeared to be about a husband/wife but, again, nobody in particular. By the way I was your secret admirer in the 'name me' thread, you pretty villain you <pant, pant>.

Gotta agree with the lyrical 'kiss-offs' in All The Rage...love that song!

1) All The Rage
2) Tramp The Dirt Down
3) You Bowed Down
4) Invasion Hit Parade
A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. Do you think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a fuckin' cross? It's kind of like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on.

I gotta agree with the majority here..."All the Rage" is so chock full of good old fashioned vitriol...

"The twitching impulses that speak your mind;
I'll lend you my microscope, and maybe you will find it"

Now, I may not have much of that correct, but it's the thought that counts...

So, my ranking would be:

1. All the Rage
2. You Bowed Down
3. Invasion Hit Parade
4. Tramp the Dirt Down

I could switch back & forth on number 2, between You Bowed Down & Invasion Hit Parade, depending on what day of the week it is, and whatever my mood happens to be...

I was an accidental secret admirer; forgot to log in.

I was a bit miffed that the last song poll was interrupted by the clock glitch after only 8 replies. I could tell that people were just dying to post some more cos, despite their frustration with the glitch, it still ended up with 23 votes. Here's how it ended:

You'll Never Be A Man - 7
Secondary Modern and This Year's Girl - 6 each
I'm Not Angry - 3
Chemistry Class - 1 (good on you, Goody! I think it's a most underrated gem - great metaphor idea "you don't know what you've started till you mix it up with mine" etc, hence it was up against these other contenders).

Some people have been conspicuously absent on these song polls... Come on, it won't kill ya. Is it somehow cheapening the songs? I just hope some song discussion gets stimulated. I'm wondering how future ones might be better, any ideas? I'm still waiting for someone else to come up with one...

Chemistry Class is my definite favorite from that list, and I would've been damn proud to vote for it.

Well here is where my political leanings let me down. STTDD was an excellent song about a women who was to shape the structure of the UK at least until this day. The first poodle. No, I correct myself, the first shitzu.

All the Rage. Easily.

However I used to love the TTDD version in 1991 when he did the extended bit live

"and if she seemed bullet proof I put it down to black magic", "the tragic forlorn faded figure whose story's on sale" and "kicking the royal cuckoo's out of their nest".

Excellent stuff!

I'd love to have seen EC segue a little bit of Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder but in a sneering sarcastic way in the middle of TTDD, just after "all she thought of was betrayal".
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?
