Elvis Costello Joins All-Star Line-Up To Celebrate Lee
Konitz’s 76th Birthday
Posted: 2003-11-19

NEW SHOW TIMES NIGHTLY AT 8:30, 10:30
THIRD SET FRI. AND SAT. AT 12:00 AM

Nov. 25-30 LEE KONITZ 76TH BIRTHDAY ALL-STAR BAND
With Special Guests: ELVIS COSTELLO (TUESDAY ONLY),
BILL FRISELL, GARY PEACOCK, MATT WILSON

The Iridium Jazz Club is pleased to announce the
addition of international recording star ELVIS
COSTELLO to the LEE KONITZ 76TH BIRTHDAY Celebration.
The all-star line-up featuring BILL FRISSEL, GARY
PEACOCK, MATT WILSON will be joined by very special
guest ELVIS COSTELLO who will sit in with the band
(Tuesday only) and also present Lee with a very
special birthday cake. Elvis's latest recording,
North, recently topped the Billboard Jazz Charts for
five consecutive weeks.

Lee Konitz (b.1927) has been among the purest jazz
improvisers for more than a half century. He emerged
in the late '40s as a member of Claude Thornhill's
band, and later Stan Kenton, where his alto-sax solos
demonstrated how the instrument could be played in a
modern style without mimicking Charlie Parker. Soon he
was studying and working with Lennie Tristano and
formed important collaborations with Warne Marsh and
Miles Davis as a featured soloist in Miles Davis'
legendary Birth of the Cool band. Always the lone wolf
Lee Konitz has been a leader in his own right for more
than 50 years. His cool-toned alto has graced numerous
recordings from Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Dave
Brubeck, and Gil Evans to recent recordings with
Michel Petrucciani, Kenny Werner and Alan Broadbent.

"Gary Peacock at the Iriduim on Tuesday evening November 25, 2003.

Gary was playing with Bill Frisell, Matt Wilson and Lee Kontiz. It was a 76th Birthday celebration for Lee and Elvis Costello was supposed to sit in and present Lee with a birthday cake. The New York Times reported that "Mr. Costello left abruptly during the sound check, apparently after a disagreement with the quartet's bassist, Gary Peacock. Mr. Costello's appearance had been arranged by Iridium, which had advertised it widely. Mr. Peacock did not want to play backup for the song; he had said so last week and reiterated that on Tuesday, said Steve Cloud, his manager. When that became clear to Mr. Costello, he left in a huff."

The event is listed as one of the Lows of year 2003 by JazzTimes. Although there were many angry Elvis fans present who had never heard of Lee Konitz, the music made that evening was wonderful and Gary Peacock seemed to be in another world, playing wonderfully.

Steve Sussman"
